How do I encourage reflective practice and student autonomy through Machnamh, a collaborative and creative approach to learning?

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to enhance my teaching and facilitation of Machnamh. Machnamh, the Irish word for reflection, is a classroom practice I designed. It is a child-led reflection session held every fortnight, in which students work in groups to revisit topics learned previously in class. During Machnamh children reflect on their given topic and then present and re-teach the topic to the whole class. This research took place in a mixed senior national school in a large suburban town in Dublin. The chapters of this thesis outline the pathway of my research journey, in which I aimed to enhance my practice and live closer to my educational values; student autonomy, skill development and inclusion. Two interventions were selected for this: co-creating success criteria and teaching skills for collaboration. Data was collected using reflective journals, work samples, questionnaires and Photovoice. Key Findings indicated that teacher’s praise, time management, the role of differentiation and teaching skills for collaboration must be considered when facilitating Machnamh. Every subject in the curriculum can be reflected on during Machnamh. It is also deeply embedded within the Principles and Competencies in the Primary Curriculum Framework (NCCA, 2023) and The Future of Education and Skills 2030 (OCED, 2018). Instead of ‘making time’ in an already full schedule, Machnamh has the potential to facilitate integration, reflection, skill development and creative assessment approaches not only in my classroom, but in all classrooms. Challenges that emerged included time shortages when completing Machnamh as well Machnamh being too little or too much of a challenge for learners. My practice evolved as I aimed to overcome these challenges. I transitioned from being an instructor and assessor of Machnamh to a facilitator that supports self-assessment, reflection and creativity. Future research could include an exploration into further linking Machnamh to Universal Design for Learning (UDL) as well as incorporating more choice into the process

This thesis is entitled “An Analysis of Promiscuity in Eimear McBride’s A girl Is A Half-Formed Thing”. This thesis is analyzing promiscuity on the main character. The purpose of this thesis is to find out and understand how it happened, to look for the two causes and impacts of promiscuity that are described in the novel. The main character is the girl, she is a victim of sexual violence by her own uncle. As a result of the vile things done by her uncle, She was involved in a deviation, namely promiscuity. She did promiscuity with lots of boys. The behavior of multiple partners in sexual relations without a commitment relationship (promiscuity) is rarely found in women. Because in general, women engage in sexual relations on the basis of love and as an expression of feelings of love towards their partners. When found by individual women with promiscuity behavior, it becomes interesting to look more deeply. The theory used to analyze is Theory by Kartono and Mcleish The research methods used in this thesis are qualitative methods and library research. The author collects data from the novel and from several sources of articles, books, and journals that have a relationship with this thesis. The results of this thesis are to reveal the truth that promiscuity can occur in the main character and get causes and impacts in their daily life.Skripsi ini berjudul “An Analysis of Promiscuity in Eimear McBride’s A girl Is A Half-Formed Thing”. The novel A Girl is a Half-Formed Thing by Eimear McBride is permeated by absences of different kinds, whose purpose is often quite hard to fathom. What made the author write in this way; what is the function of these gaps? The paper examines the iconic potential of the novel’s gaps against the background of what is conventional in three different types of text: spoken vs. written language, adult vs. child language, and historical developments in prose. The most significant gaps in the novel are the use of null pronouns, the absence of function words, as well as the absence of nominal and verbal inflexions and obligatory verbal arguments. The gaps all refer in an iconic-indexical way to characteristics of early child language representing the lack of linguistic-cognitive planning in a traumatized woman who was prevented from growing up into a normally functional adult.</p

Trauma and its Representation in Eimear McBride’s A Girl is a Half-formed Thing

This thesis analyzes the representation of trauma in Eimear McBride’s 2013 novel A Girl is a Half-formed Thing. Since its publication, the academic interest in Girl has continued to grow, with Girl almost exclusively being interpreted in light of the author’s apparent modernist and Joycean influence. However, recent scholarship has moved the discussion towards the necessary readings of the novel in the context of contemporary girlhood and representations of trauma. The academic discussion of girlhood and trauma focuses primarily on the social and historical context of the text and, indeed, the workings of the author’s stylistic choices; yet I would argue that further discussion is needed on how the narrative, narration, and the narrator works to represent trauma and its effects. This thesis, therefore, argues that the discussion needs to look beyond its apparent connection to modernism and the assessment of the intention of the author in order to analyze how the text is engaging in the representation of trauma. For this to happen, this thesis will concentrate on the workings of the novel’s narrative, narration, and its narrator through a theoretically informed close reading and critical assessment of three key scenes from the novel. Literary Trauma Theory will provide the necessary critical framework for the analysis of trauma and its representation. Extensive attention will be given to the narrative by focusing on the narration’s focalization, the structure and form of the narrator’s language, and some of the keywords within the narrative. Ultimately, this informed analysis shows that not only does the narration reveal what is occurring in the narrative through its representation of trauma and traumatic events, but also that trauma also manifests itself in the very structure and form of the narration

Does therapist self-disclosure enhance or distract from the client experience? An exploration of the ethical implications of therapist self-disclosure on therapeutic boundaries

Therapist self-disclosure and its impact on the client experience has attracted increased attention across the psychotherapeutic literature in recent years. This paper discusses the use of therapist self-disclosure in the context of the ethical treatment of clients, the implications for therapeutic boundaries and the appropriate use within the psychotherapeutic setting. Perspectives on therapist self-disclosure vary but, rather than avoid the use of self-disclosure, the research proposes that the client’s experience can be enhanced through the successful integration of appropriate, relevant and timely self-disclosures by the therapist. This chapter presents a review of the Irish literature on women, children and drug use. Analysis of the National Drug Treatment Reporting System, which provides statistics on treated drug misuse, indicates that 30% of drug users presenting for treatment were female. Other sources of data used were a study of drug users attending a Dublin needle exchange programme and Department of Health and Children statistics on incidence of HIV, which provided epidemiological and health information. Two surveys of the prison population suggest that opiate use is a serious problem among women in the Irish prison system. The available research literature on opiate addiction and pregnancy and on the issue of how children are affected by parental drug dependence in Ireland is reviewed. The author argues that the available indicators all suggest that female drug users have particular needs that require to be taken into account in service planning and provision, and that more research effort is needed into the issues surrounding drug use by Irish women. She found that research in the area has focused almost exclusively on pregnant opiate addicts. Consequently, there is a lack of information on how drug use affects women in general and how parental drug use impacts on children

A path analysis of the relationship between cross-cultural adjustment, person-environment fit and work-related outcomes

    No full text
Understanding how expatriates adjust to the various aspects of the host environment has been a focal point of research within international human resource management literature for several decades. Person-environment (PE) fit investigates the degree of „fit‟ an employee has with the various dimensions of their working environment. Several researchers have suggested that successful PE fit positively influences work outcomes such as adjustment, job satisfaction and task performance. However, to the author‟s knowledge, no empirical research has been conducted on the relationship between PE fit, cross-cultural adjustment and work-related outcomes. The main aims of this study were to 1) investigate the overall relationship between PE fit and cross-cultural adjustment and 2) investigate the overall relationship between PE fit, cross-cultural adjustment and work-related outcomes. Three hundred and sixty-nine nonconsultant hospital doctors (NCHDs) working in Ireland filled out the questionnaire. Backward multiple regression and path analyses were the statistical approaches used to determine the relationship between PE fit, crosscultural adjustment and work-related outcomes. The results revealed both direct and indirect relationships between the three models suggesting that good overall PE fit on an international assignment can positively influence an expatriate‟s overall cross-cultural adjustment and overall work-related outcomes. The results indicate that Human Resources (HR) should focus on maininting expatriates‟ overall PE fit while on an international assignment as higher levels of overall PE fit can positively influence successful cross-cultural adjustment and work-related outcomes
