Numerical Simulation of Traditional and Technological Zinc-Based Coatings: Part II
Herein, the bending behavior of hot-dip galvanizing hot-rolled hypersandelin plates, together with the corresponding crack pattern, is numerically investigated by using a hybrid model developed in Ansys LS-DYNA environment, by combining the discrete element method (DEM) with finite element method (FEM). The experimental bending tests here simulated and available in the literature are performed by considering two types of bath, that is, a pure zinc bath and a technological bath, consisting in a zinc bath with 3% Sn addition by weight. The results related to the bending behavior are compared with both experimental data and other FE numerical results, previously obtained by some of the present authors. Moreover, the numerical crack patterns are compared with the experimental observations of the longitudinal section of the plates at the end of testing, by means of a light optical microscope. A quite satisfactory agreement is observed
A novel non-linear peridynamic model for quasi-brittle materials under cyclic loading
In the present paper, a novel non-linear peridynamic (PD) model is proposed to numerically simulate the fatigue behaviour of quasi-brittle materials. The model implements a non-linear degradation law for the bonds, function of the number of loading cycles. More precisely, a calibration function and a calibration parameter are included in such a law. The novel PD model is applied to simulate cyclic three-point bending experimental tests performed on concrete notched beams (available in the literature). Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
A Fractal Analysis of the Size Effect in Quasi-Brittle Materials: Experimental Tests and Peridynamic Simulations
In the design of structures involving quasi-brittle materials such as concrete, it is essential to consider the scale dependence of the mechanical properties of the material. Among the theories used to describe the phenomenon of size effect, the fractal theory proposed by Carpinteri and colleagues has attracted attention for its results in the last three decades of research. The present study employs the fractal perspective to examine the scale effect in three-point bending tests conducted on expanded polyethylene (EPS) beam specimens. The influence of size on flexural strength, fracture energy, and critical angle of rotation is investigated. Additionally, numerical simulations based on peridynamic (PD) theory are performed based on the experimental tests. The global behavior, brittleness, failure configuration, and fractal scale effect obtained numerically are evaluated. The numerical results show a good correlation with the experimental ones and, moreover, both the experimental and numerical results are in agreement with the fractal theory of scale effect. More precisely, the error of the sum of the fractal exponents, computed with respect to the theoretical one, is equal to −1.20% and −2.10% for the experimental and numerical results, respectively. Moreover, the classical dimensional analysis has been employed to demonstrate that the scale effect can be naturally described by the PD model parameters, allowing to extend the results for scales beyond those analyzed experimentally
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Analysis of Acoustic Emission Activity during Progressive Failure in Heterogeneous Materials: Experimental and Numerical Investigation
This work focuses on an experimental and numerical investigation into monitoring damage in a cube-shaped concrete specimen under compression. Experimental monitoring uses acoustic emission (AE) signals acquired by two independent measurement apparatuses, and the same damage process is numerically simulated with the lattice discrete element method (LDEM). The results from the experiment and simulation are then compared in terms of their failure load, final configurations, and the evolution of global parameters based on AE signals, such as the b-value coefficient and the natural time approach. It is concluded that the results from the AE analysis present a significant sensitivity to the characteristics of the acquisition systems. However, natural time methods are more robust for determining such differences, indicating the same general tendency for all three data sets
