Selecting an appropriate size domestic rainwater tank for Colombo
No full textBoth India and Sri Lanka have experienced rapid population growth and migration to the major cities in the past decade. This rapid urbanisation has resulted in overstressing of existing water supply systems, with a loss of recharge areas and an increased depletion of groundwater. These effects have further aggravated the urban water crisis. During the monsoons, the existing drainage systems are overloaded and overflow thereby resulting in flooding causing severe damage to property. Sewage overflows often lead to the outbreak of epidemics and occasionally to the loss of life. Rainwater harvesting systems serve the dual purpose of water storage to reduce urban runoff peak flows as well as augmentation of the existing water supply systems. To achieve minimum costs while optimising the security of supply, rainwater tanks need to be sized taking the local rainfall conditions into consideration. This paper presents a methodology to determine the optimal size of rooftop storage based on historical rainfall data. Annual savings of in-house demand as well as the security of rainwater supply are discussed. The methodology is applied to Colombo in Sri Lanka. A case study is based on 150lpd household demand with 25m2 of roof area in Colombo. The appropriate rainwater tank is determined to be 2000 L in capacity. The resulting water saving is 54% of annual in-house demand and more importantly, zero supply from the tank happens during only one third of the year

Benzofuran Derivatives Activators of the Chaperone Protein Hsp90: Synthesis, Interaction Studies and Biological Effects
No full textWe have recently reported that allosteric modulation of the chaperone protein Hsp901 can be achieved in an allosteric fashion using a family of 2-phenyl-benzofuran derivatives that target an allosteric pocket at the C-terminal domain of the protein.2,3 These ligands are mainly activators of the chaperone ATPase activity3 and are accelerators of the protein internal dynamics.4 As a result, they tune Hsp90 chaperone activity in ways that we are just beginning to unravel.
We are going to present the synthetic approaches towards an expanded library of about 40 benzofuran derivatives diversified at positions R1 and R2 along with the interaction studies with full length Hsp905 and the effects on Hsp90 enzymatic and chaperoning activity.

Synthesis and characterization of Hsp90 allosteric activators
No full textHsp90 is a molecular chaperone playing a pivotal role in the cell life cycle1 and an established anti-apoptotic target in cancer therapy.2 The protein internal dynamics are regulated by ATP and are critical for its function. We have recently demonstrated that Hsp90 can be modulated in an allosteric fashion, targeting the protein C-terminal domain (CTD) with a family of 2-phenyl-benzofuran derivatives.3-5 These molecules increase Hsp90 ATPase rate and accelerate its internal dynamics. As a result they tune its chaperone activity in ways that we are just beginning to unravel.
The synthetic approaches towards an expanded library of about 40 benzofuran derivatives diversified at positions R1 and R2 (Figure 1) will be presented together with the interaction studies with full length Hsp90.6

Altre libertà : pratiche performative e comportamentali nella poesia visuale italiana degli anni Sessanta e Settanta
No full textIl saggio a più mani (Zanchetti, Colombo, Giuranna, Sem) indaga e legge le esperienze di azione poetica e di performance sviluppate dalle neoavanguardie verbovisuali italiane degli anni Sessanta e Settanta a partire da una riformulazione delle parole in libertà futuriste.
In particolare si mettono in luce le esperienze propriamente performative di poeti e artisti quali Balestrini, Caruso, Costa, Xerra, Sarenco, Niccolai, Oberto, Parmiggiani, Vicinelli e di poeti come Chiari, Marchetti e Mosconi nei loro rapporti con il contesto internazionale di Fluxus. Da non dimenticare anche figure come La Rocca, Vaccari e Patella, anche per la loro produzione filmica.
Il saggio si sofferma poi su alcune figure specifiche: Arrigo Lora-Totino, Adriano Spatola, Eugenio Miccini, Maurizio Nannucci ed Emilio Villa.
L’ultima parte del saggio – Emilio Villa: “par l’art sonore” – è stata scritta da Davide Colombo. Si tratta di un approfondimento sul poeta e critico d’arte Emilio Villa: per Villa l’operazione poetica è un’azione sul verbum che conduce a una nuova e originaria percezione del phonos. Il saggio analizza la sperimentazione linguistica di Villa sia nei testi poetici sia nei testi dedicati agli artisti negli anni Cinquanta e Sessanta. In particolare si analizza come il tema del fonema venga sviluppato fino a sperimentazioni performative di poesia sonora durante gli anni Settanta.Many word-image experiments in late XXth Century art take their starting point from the historical precedent of the liberation of the poetic words pointed out by Marinetti in his manifesto Wireless Imagination and Words in Freedom (1913). The different practices in Italian visual poetry contributed to the very first development of conceptual art and performance art, going beyond the narrow limits of « sound-poetry » and « action-poetry » in strict sense. The authors of this essay, coordinated by G. Zanchetti, focus on some actions by a small number of artists and poets who played a key role in this field of expression in the Sixties and the Seventies: Martino Oberto, Ketty La Rocca, Franco Vaccari, Luca Patella, Adriano Spatola, Eugenio Miccini and Maurizio Nannucci. Two sections of the article are devoted to the work by Arrigo Lora-Totino as an author, editor and performer and to the inspirational and groundbreaking role of the poet Emilio Villa even in this kind of practices
Etnobotanica a Sondalo (Valtellina, SO), con particolare attenzione alle specie a principi amari
No full textFin dall’antichità, l’isolamento geografico che ha caratterizzato le comunità della regione
alpina ha favorito la preservazione di un prezioso patrimonio bioculturale legato alle
tradizioni d’uso delle specie vegetali autoctone. Il presente lavoro è riferito ad un’indagine
etnobotanica realizzata nel 2019 nel territorio di Sondalo (Valtellina, SO) al fine di esaminare
gli usi tradizionali delle specie vegetali in ambito medicinale, veterinario, alimentare,
domestico e religioso. La ricerca è stata condotta mediante interviste semi-strutturate e
aperte e le informazioni raccolte sono state inserite in un database costruito ad hoc. Sono
state intervistate 101 persone di età compresa tra i 25 e i 98 anni, nate o residenti presso
l’area di studio; in totale sono state citate 112 entità vegetali (77.67% spontanee, 22.32%
coltivate), appartenenti a 52 famiglie. Gli usi tradizionali citati riguardano diversi settori della
vita quotidiana.
Con particolare attenzione alle specie impiegate in ambito terapeutico le più citate sono
risultate Sambucus nigra L. (10.39%), Achillea moschata Wulfen (9.86%), Arnica montana L.
(6.63%) e Malva neglecta Wallr. (6.63%); le parti di pianta più utilizzate sono
fiori/infiorescenze (41.93%) e foglie (12.54%), mentre le preparazioni più diffuse sono infusi
(31.00%) e decotti (20.79%).
In relazione al soggetto del congresso, abbiamo focalizzato l’attenzione sulle specie a principi
amari, con particolare riguardo a quelle impiegate nel trattamento di patologie a carico
dell’apparato digerente. È stata successivamente effettuata una ricerca in letteratura
scientifica al fine di validare o confutarne le tradizioni d’uso. Dallo studio emerge che le
specie rappresentative sono A. moschata e Achillea millefolium L. (caratterizzata dalla
presenza di achilleina, glucoside amaro) per la preparazione di infusi digestivi e per il mal di
stomaco e Gentiana punctata L. (contenente glucosidi amari quali genziopicrina,
genziamarina e genziina) impiegata per la preparazione di decotti digestivi. Le proprietà
digestive delle due ultime entità sono state validate dalla moderna letteratura di settore [1,
2]. Questo lavoro, oltre ad incrementare il mosaico degli studi etnobotanici riguardanti la
Valtellina, contribuisce al recupero delle tradizioni dell’area di studio e sottolinea
l’importanza di questo tipo di indagini, al fine di individuare nuovi composti bioattivi naturali
potenzialmente utili in campo farmacologico.
