Development of the hub port of Colombo, Sri Lanka
The Port of Colombo, Sri Lanka, is an important hub port in the Indian Ocean. A hub port is a port with mainly transhipment (and in this case container) throughput, which means that most of the cargo is not for the country itself, but for countries in the region. The yearly container throughput at the Port of Colombo reached its full capacity of 1.7 million TEU per year in 1997. Increasing waiting times for ships calling at the port are a result of this. Because of the costs of a waiting ship, shipping lines will choose other ports in the region such as Singapore, Salalah (Oman) or Dubai (United Arab Emirates) for their ships to go to. The aim of this study is to develop a plan for a New Container Terminal, which will give the Port of Colombo enough container throughput capacity for the next 25 years: till the year 2025.Hydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience

Orbit design for future SpaceChip swarm missions in a planetary atmosphere
The effect of solar radiation pressure and atmospheric drag on the orbital dynamics of satellites-on-a-chip (SpaceChips) is exploited to design equatorial long-lived orbits about the oblate Earth. The orbit energy gain due to asymmetric solar radiation pressure, considering the Earth's shadow, is used to balance the energy loss due to atmospheric drag. Future missions for a swarm of SpaceChips are proposed, where a number of small devices are released from a conventional spacecraft to perform spatially distributed measurements of the conditions in the ionosphere and exosphere. It is shown that the orbit lifetime can be extended and indeed selected through solar radiation pressure and the end-of-life re-entry of the swarm can be ensured, by exploiting atmospheric drag

This thesis deals with the social representations of the subjects involved in the use and the management of the water on Karst Aquifer in the City of Colombo (PR), since the beginning of its use, in 1995, until the current days. The exploration of this aquifer, that in its beginning it was about an institutional solution for the problem of the water lack in the urban area of Colombo, became the partner-ambient scene of conflicts and impacts. It was used in this thesis the model of analysis of the social representations and the patrimonial management of the natural resources. One analyzed the common factors of the conflict and of the use of the water on three categories of involved citizens in the use and management of Karst Aquifer water: Farmers, Technicians of Sanepar Company and Public Agencies. The research indicated that the conflict expressed, on the one side, by the farmers claiming that the irrational exploitation of Karst Aquifer interfered directly on the availability of water from them for irrigation agriculture. The other side, by Sanepar claiming the impossibility of stops the capture of this Aquifer in line to be the only viable solution to meet the demand for water in Colombo City. The results of analysis of social representations of the subjects involved, as much on the conflict as in relation to the meanings of the use of the water, pointed a linkage between the representations of the subjects with the social role that they develop. In the category of farmers, the results showed that the water represents both maintenance of the physical survival as of the familiar economic income of the citizens, being the motivating factor of the conflict. In the category of Technicians of Sanepar Company, the results linked with one of the missions of the company, the supply public. And in the Public Agencies, the results related with the social mission that they represent, as the management, supervision, licensing and environmental mediation of social conflicts and environmental

Improved 3D printed silica ceramics impregnated with an alumina sol by controlling atmosphere, vacuum pressure and holding time
When the content of cristobalite is in the appropriate range, the mechanical properties of silica ceramics can be improved. The formation and growth of cristobalite in silica ceramics can be promoted by introducing alumina into silica ceramics by vacuum impregnation. In this study, the influence of different conditions on the impregnation of silica ceramics by alumina sol was studied by controlling the impregnation atmosphere, vacuum impregnation pressure and vacuum impregnation time. The results proved that the impregnation atmosphere has a great influence on the impregnation effect. The flexural strength of vacuum impregnated sample increased by 278.8 % compared with that of air impregnated sample. The smaller the pressure, the greater the difference between the pressure and the external pressure, and the better the impregnation effect of the sample. The flexural strength of the sample with vacuum impregnation pressure of 0.015 MPa was 138.1 % higher than that of the sample with vacuum impregnation pressure of 0.065 MPa. The increase of vacuum impregnation holding time can improve the performance of the sample, but the improvement effect has an upper limit. When the vacuum impregnation time was 3.0 h, the strength of the sample improved by 98.3 % compared with that of the sample with vacuum impregnation time of 1.5 h. Based on the mechanical properties and economic benefits, the best mechanical properties of silica ceramics were obtained by impregnating 3.0 h with 25 wt% alumina sol at a temperature of 60 °C and a vacuum pressure of 0.015 MPa. In these conditions, the flexural strength of the samples was 19.9 ± 0.4 MPa, the bulk density was 1.68 ± 0.02 g/cm3, and the porosity was 25.9 ± 0.9 %
