Factors influencing wolf Canis lupus roadkills in Northwest Spain

    No full text
International audienceRoadkill is one of the most prominent causes of wildlife mortality. Much research effort has focussed on collisions with ungulates because of traffic safety. However, studies about large carnivore roadkills are scarce despite vehicles being a main cause of mortality. The absence of studies can be explained in part because of difficulties in obtaining sufficient sample sizes. We collected data from locations of 82 wolf roadkill sites in the Castilla y León Region, northwest Spain. We evaluated different models to characterise collision localities using logistic regressions with corrections for rare events. The best models included traffic and human disturbance parameters. Landscape variables did not improve predictive power. Fencing was a decisive key predictor; roadkill was proportionally higher along fenced highways than on similar major roads that lacked fences. Wolf-vehicle collisions were more common in agricultural areas, although wolf densities were lower in these zones. Both the higher density of important roads and a greater proportion of roaming wolves on the plateau may explain this pattern

The relationship between Emblematics and Ephemeral Art constitutes a palpable reality throughout XVIth and XVIIth centuries, with mutual influences between both cultural manifestations. Undoubtedly, the most singular case of agreement between Ephemeral and Emblematic Art is "Arcus aliquot triumphal et monumenta victor classicae" by Sambuco, a dissertation that mixed an Emblematics treatise with the supposed chronicle of a fictional triumphal entry. Through sixteen figurative compositions, Sambuco, the author of one of the most important and transcendental treatises of the Emblematics in the XVIth century, published in 1572 in Antwerp a curious work, barely known, situated halfway between the book of emblems and the chronicle of a triumphal entry.peerReviewe

Talking Away the Crisis? The E3/EU-Iran Negotiations on Nuclear Issues. College of Europe EU Diplomacy Paper 6/2007, November 2007

    No full text
The E3/EU-Iran negotiations on nuclear issues have been ongoing since summer 2003 with the aim to find a balance between Iran’s desire to establish a peaceful nuclear enrichment programme and satisfying the safeguards of the international community against the possible development of a nuclear weapons programme. This paper provides an analysis of these negotiations and draws the conclusion that the E3, and later the E3/EU, have entered the negotiations with Iran without a clear strategy or alternative outcomes, focusing only on ‘getting what they want’. It argues that in order to reach a mutually acceptable solution, the E3/EU needs to take a more pro-active stand in preparing the pre-negotiations and negotiations. It will be important to find a common formula. The E3/EU needs to create a win-win situation and end the crisis before it is too late

Education and earnings inequality in Mexico

    No full text
Education attainment levels increased dramatically for Mexico's labor force in the 1980s and early 1990s. In parallel, the country experienced a pronounced increase in earnings inequality from 1984-94, reflected in a higher dispersion of wages and an absolute decline in the real incomes of less educated, poorer Mexicans. This increased wage dispersion presents policymakers with a tradeoff between efficiency considerations (favoring increased spending on higher education) and equity considerations (favoring a more equal distribution of per student spending) in the allocation of fiscal resources to education. The author concludes that the best way to deal with this equity-efficiency tradeoff is to encourage greater private participation in higher education. His main findings are that: a) The accumulation of human capital during 1984-94, as proxied by education attainment, was accompanied by a more equal distribution of education attainment levels over that period and, thus, exerted an equalizing effect on the distribution of incomes. The increased income inequalityobserved over that period appears to be caused by an increased rate of skill-based technological change, whose transmission to Mexico and other developing countries may have been facilitated by the increased openness of their economies. b) The greater dispersion of wager observed in Mexico during the past decade raised the rates of return on investing in higher education, reversing the traditional pattern where primary education exhibits the highest rates of return. c) The social rates of return across levels of schooling were more uniform in 1994 than in 1984, suggesting a more efficient assignment of education spending. At the same time, the distribution of spending on education became more egalitarian, as per student spending in higher education declined markedly compared with per student spending at the primary level. This surprising coincidence in the pattern of spending on education was only possible because Mexico started out with a very distorted resource allocation in education that was both highly inequitable and inefficient. As Mexico's policymakers are on the way to correcting these distortions, the opportunities for avoiding the equity-efficiency tradeoff within Mexico's centralized education framework will become progressively exhausted. d) There is little reason to expect the pace of technological change, which appears mainly responsible for raising wage dispersion and the relative returns on higher education, to abate. Efficiency considerations dictate that Mexico should respond by devoting more resources to higher education. However, the federal budget, which traditionally has financed the lion's share of higher education costs in Mexico, is unable to accommodate additional spending on higher education, while spending cuts elsewhere in the education sector are bound to raise serious equity questions. Thus, to avoid falling behind in terms of human capital accumulation, greater private sector participation is necessary, at least, in terms of cost recovery from the main beneficiaries of higher education.Decentralization,Teaching and Learning,Environmental Economics&Policies,Public Health Promotion,Curriculum&Instruction,Teaching and Learning,Environmental Economics&Policies,Health Monitoring&Evaluation,Gender and Education,Curriculum&Instruction

LA TRADUCCIÓN DE LAS CITAS ENTRE LA TRADICIÓN Y LA INNOVACIÓN. ESTUDIO DE CASO: LAS INSERCIONES DE LOS MISERABLES DE VICTOR HUGO EN TERRA ALTA DE JAVIER CERCAS

There is a trend among Spanish writers to cite authors without specifying the publishing house, the year of the publication or the page number. In essayistic texts, the bibliography may complete the missing data, except for the page number. In literary texts, nevertheless, this information is generally missing. This tendency can be justified by the authors’ intention to renew the reading experience, making it more fluent by clearing away the academic appearance in a novel. The present article compares varioustranslations of Javier Cercas’ Terra Alta including fragments from Les Misérables, with a focus on the presence or the absence of references to their location in the Hugo’s novel. At the end, the analysis will emphasize which of them is more respectful to the French masterpiece, without ignoring the need of a fluid reading experience. Traditionally, a published translation is required to be more rigorous when rendering quotations, that should be taken from an existing translation, with the mandatory specification of the publishing house, the year, the page number and the translator’s name. But when footnotes are missing in the source text, the translator is entitled to act as the author himself. Consequently, this article also brings up questions related to this specific situation: should a translator specify all the details about the insertion, paying tribute to one of his or her peers that translated the quoted book, even if this might affect the reading experience? Or should they ignore the existing translation, if outdated or erroneous, and provide a new one, turning to the indirect translation or to the original text (Hugo’s Les Misérables)? And finally, should the  translator specify his or her choices in a footnote or act discreetly, running the risk of being accused of plagiarism

Abstract : This work is a historical narrative about juridical ideas of Professor Miguel Reale, a brasilian jurist and philosopher, from the time he became involved with the political movement known as ?Integralismo? (1933) until the publication of ?Filosofia do Direito? (1953). This research was based on my interpretation of Reale?s memories (?Memórias?, from 1987), in comparison with his works about ?Integralismo?, Theory of Law, Theory of State, Political Philosophy and Philosophy of Law. In adition to this, it contains an empirical research about ?Acção?, an integralist newspaper directed by Reale between 1936 and 1938. Nowadays, this material is microfilmed in the ?Arquivo Público do Estado de São Paulo?, the State of São Paulo?s Public Archive. The intellectual and political trajectories of the author were analyzed altogether, through the methods of historiography and sociology of intellectuals. Some analytical categories created by Michel Foucault and Pierre Bourdieu were used to achieve this purpose

Car-Following Model using Machine Learning Techniques: Approach at Urban Signalized Intersections with Traffic Radar Detection

    No full text
This master thesis aims to gain new empirical insights into longitudinal driving behavior by means of the enumeration of a new hybrid car-following (CF) model which combines parametric and non parametric formulation. On one hand, the model, which predicts the drivers acceleration given a set of variables, benefits from innovative machine learning techniques such as Gaussian process regression (GPR) to make predictions when there exist correlation between new input and the training dataset. On the other hand, it uses existent traditional parametric CF models to predict acceleration when no similar situations are found in the training dataset. This formulation guarantees a complete and continues model and deals with the challenges of new available types of dataset in the transport field: noisy and incomplete yet with large amount of data. Multiple models have been trained using the Optimal Velocity Model (OVM) as a basis parametric model and a dataset collected in the PPA project in Amsterdam by traffic radar detection in stop and go traffic conditions. The other main innovation of this thesis is that variables rarely included in any CF model such as the status and the distance of drivers to the traffic light are also analyzed. Results show that the GPR model formulation is robust as the model performs better than OVM alone according to the main KPI, but still collisions occasionally occur. Moreover, results depict that traffic light status actively influences driver behavior. Overall, this thesis gives insights into new powerful mathematical techniques that can be applied to describe longitudinal driving behavior or any modeled process

This study is dedicated to Spanish students, native Russian speakers. The main goal of this study is to show that the types of verbal synonymy, which work in modern Spanish and Russian The author examines the verbal synonymy in the Spanish and Russian languages based on the analysis of the grammatical meanings of temporal forms to determine the correlation between their semantic fields in the syntagmatic and to establish the degree of their synonymic relations. Verbal synonymy is investigated at the level of semantic, denotative and connotative convergence of temporal verbal structures in the plane of intramodal and intermodal relations. In addition, the author attempts to classify the types of verbal grammatical synonymy in Spanish and Russian. In the investigation, the verbal system of the Spanish language has been subjected to a systemic analysis based first on the corresponding achievements of Spanish, Latin American and Russian scientists. The author of this thesis, for the first time in Russian Hispanism, has elaborated the criteria of intramodal and intermodal verbal synonymy based on the denotation and connotation of the temporal forms of the verb in the Spanish and Russian languages. This work can be useful, from a theoretical point of view, for those who study the Spanish language and other Indo-European languages genetically related to each other, and above all, from a practical point of view, for native speakers of Russian
