In Paul Hiebert's Sarah Binks, incongruity between what is real and what is perceived or fancied is sustained at all levels, thus maintaining throughout the contrast necessary for humour. Noonan extends the concept of incongruity to apply to the general states of mind of Sarah, the fictional "Author," Hiebert, and the reader
Patterns of development, patterns of syncretism of relational morphology in the Bodic languages
In this paper, the author presents the results of an examination of the relational morphology in 76 Tibeto-Burman languages, primarily from the Bodic section of the Tibeto-Burman language family. He discusses a set of etymons used to express relational functions and show how the meanings of the reflexes of these etymons have evolved. Michael Noonan then go on to discuss overall patterns of syncretism of relational markers in these languages. Finally, the author deals with the relation between the observed overall patterns of syncretism and the evolution of the reflexes of the etymons

I\u27m Not Rockefeller: Implications for Major Foundations Seeking to Engage Ultra- High-Net-Worth Donors
· This article describes how a group of 33 ultrahigh- net-worth philanthropists (UHNWPs) approach their giving.
· A few key areas dominated their giving priorities: education; health; poverty and social welfare; and children/youth initiatives each were a priority for more than a quarter of participants – with education expressed as an interest of 55 percent.
· A third of the 24 who responded to the question spent less than 10 percent of their full working time devoted to philanthropy, and 13 dedicated less than 20 percent of their working time.
· UHNWPs view their peers as their most trusted information resource. After peers, the most commonly cited source of information was the popular press.
· UHNWPs typically are ambivalent or uncertain about the value of evaluation.
· Partnerships between organized philanthropy and UHNWPs has potential benefits for both, if barriers of job responsibilities, training, communication styles and vocabulary can be overcome
Suzdalia's eastern trade in the century before the Mongol conquest
Thomas S. Noonan, Suzdalia's eastern trade in the century before the Mongol conquest.
This article focuses upon Suzdalia's trade ties with the East during the period ca. 1150-ca. 1235 and the role of the Volga Bulgars in this trade. The author argues that the active ninth-tenth century eastern trade of Rus' via the Volga did not cease in the twelfth and early thirteenth centuries. However, this earlier eastern trade of Rus' by way of the Volga had been greatly altered by the mid-twelfth century. The author suggests that a joint Volga Bulgar-Suzdalian monopoly or co-dominium over the Volga trade between Rus' and the East existed during the century before the Mongol conquest. This co-dominium was based on the longstanding and close trade relations between Suzdalia and the Volga Bulgars.
Noonan Thomas S. Capitalism, health and wellbeing: rethinking economic growth for a healthier, sustainable future
Health inequalities are widening, and crises of obesity, physical inactivity and mental health are worsening around the world. Yet there remains a reluctance to discuss the threat capitalism poses to health and wellbeing. Offering a unique contribution to the field, Capitalism, Health and Wellbeing: Rethinking Economic Growth for a Healthier, Sustainable Future addresses the elephant in the room: economic growth.Challenging this crucial yet overlooked issue, author Rob Noonan contends that the drive for economic growth is at odds with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals to achieve a better and more sustainable future. He argues that if the 'health for all' goal is to be achieved, it is imperative to redesign the economic system and social progress metrics that promote productivity and consumption at the expense of health and wellbeing. While clearly outlining the challenges governments face, Noonan offers solutions on how we can reverse the accelerating trends of obesity, physical inactivity and poor mental health, as well as how we can use scientific understanding and history to improve public health and reduce health inequalities.Rooted in thoughtful evidence and achievable actions, this work empowers readers to contribute to positive transformation and create a healthier, more just and more sustainable world
Luster of our country
A New York Times Notable Book This remarkable work offers a fresh approach to a freedom that is often taken for granted in the United States, yet is one of the strongest and proudest elements of American culture: religious freedom. In this compellingly written, distinctively personal book, Judge John T. Noonan asserts that freedom of religion, as James Madison conceived it, is an American invention previously unknown to any nation on earth. The Lustre of Our Country demonstrates how the idea of religious liberty is central to the American experience and to American influence around the world.Noonan's original book is a history of the idea of religious liberty and its relationship with the law. He begins with an intellectual autobiography, describing his own religious and legal training. After setting the stage with autobiography, Noonan turns to history, with each chapter written in a new voice. One chapter takes the form of a catechism (questions and answers), presenting the history of the idea of religious freedom in Christianity and the American colonies. Another chapter on James Madison argues that Madison's support of religious freedom was not purely secular but rather the outcome of his own religious beliefs. A fictional sister of Alexis de Toqueville writes, contrary to her brother's work, that the U.S. government is very closely tied to religion. Other chapters offer straightforward considerations of constitutional law.Throughout the book, Noonan shows how the free exercise of religion led to profound changes in American law - he discusses abolition, temperance, and civil rights - and how the legal notion of religious liberty influenced revolutionary France, Japan, and Russia, as well as the Catholic Church during Vatican II. The Lustre of Our Country is a celebration of religious freedom - a personal and profound statement on what the author considers America's greatest moral contribution to the world
