Analgesia and Sedation of Pediatric Patients with Major Trauma in Pre-Hospital and Emergency Department Settings—A Narrative Review

    No full text
Children who sustain major injuries are at risk of receiving insufficient pain relief and sedation, which can have physical and psychological repercussions. Heightened emotional distress can increase the likelihood of developing symptoms of post-traumatic stress. Providing sufficient analgesia and sedation for children with major trauma presents specific challenges, given the potential for drug-related adverse events, particularly in non-intubated patients. The current literature suggests that a relatively low percentage of pediatric patients receive adequate analgesia in pre-hospital and emergency department settings following major trauma. There are only sparse data on the safety of the provision of analgesia and sedation in children with major trauma in the pre-hospital and ED settings. The few studies that examined sedation protocols in this context highlight the importance of physician training and competency in managing pediatric airways. There is a pressing need for prospective studies that focus upon pediatric major trauma in the pre-hospital and emergency department setting to evaluate the benefits and risks of administering analgesia and sedation to these patients. The aim of this narrative review was to offer an updated overview of analgesia and sedation management in children with major trauma in pre-hospital and ED settings

Professor Mort Cohen: An Advocate Professor\u27s Journey

    No full text
Professor Mort Cohen has taught at GGU Law for 30 years. In addition to teaching, Cohen has taken on pro bono cases as an advocate, most recently in service of the elderly and mentally ill. In 2012, Cohen successfully represented two individuals and the California Association of Mental Health Patients Rights Advocates in K.G. Et al v. Meredith as a Marin County Public Guardian. In an unprecedented, unanimous decision, a three-judge panel in The California Court of Appeal, First District stated that patients could not be treated with mind-altering drugs without their informed consent. It further stated that the County of Marin denied such people due process by failing to give them adequate notice, counsel, and a hearing before finding them disabled and rendering them incapable of exercising rights of decisional autonomy (their right to make their own medical decisions). In 2012, he was presented with two Attorney of the Year awards, one from California Advocates for Nursing Home Reform and one from the California Association of Mental Health Patients Rights Advocates. Recently, Professor Cohen generously took some time to discuss his professional journey and passion

Lessons from international experience with electricity market monitoring

    No full text
The author first describes those features of the electricity supply industry that make a prospective market monitoring process essential to a well-functioning wholesale market. Some of these features are shared with the securities industry, although the technology of electricity production and delivery make a reliable transmission network a necessary condition for an efficient wholesale market. These features of the electricity supply industry also make antitrust or competition law alone an inadequate foundation for an electricity market monitoring process. The author provides examples of both the successes and failures of market monitoring from several international markets. More than 10 years of experience with the electricity industry restructuring process has shown that market failures are more likely and substantially more harmful to consumers than other market failures because of how electricity is produced and delivered and the crucial role it plays in the modern economy. Wholesale market meltdowns of varying magnitudes and durations have occurred in electricity markets around the world, and many of them could have been prevented if a prospective market monitoring process backed by the prevailing regulatory authority had been in place at the start of the market.Access to Markets,Markets and Market Access,Environmental Economics&Policies,ClimateChange,Health Economics&Finance

Mining Unclassified Traffic Using Automatic Clustering Techniques

    No full text
In this paper we present a fully unsupervised algorithm to identify classes of traffic inside an aggregate. The algorithm leverages on the K-means clustering algorithm, augmented with a mechanism to automatically determine the number of traffic clusters. The signatures used for clustering are statistical representations of the application layer protocols. The proposed technique is extensively tested considering UDP traffic traces collected from operative networks. Performance tests show that it can clusterize the traffic in few tens of pure clusters, achieving an accuracy above 95%. Results are promising and suggest that the proposed approach might effectively be used for automatic traffic monitoring, e.g., to identify the birth of new applications and protocols, or the presence of anomalous or unexpected traffi

Techno-economic transition towards a hydrogen economy

    No full text
PhDThe research conducted is in the field of innovation and focuses on the UK energy sector. The key theme of the study is the transition towards a hydrogen economy with fuel cell technologies at the epicentre and takes into account the relevant scientific, technological, economic and policy issues. In order to provide an understanding of the factors that affect techno-economic transitions to alternative energy systems, the thesis investigates the historical transition processes such as the transition to electrification in the early 1900s and recent transitions to CCGT and renewable energy systems (wind, biofuels and solar) that have taken place since the late 1980s. As the developmental status of hydrogen technologies lay at the heart of these transitions, a thorough analysis of the hydrogen and fuel cell technologies, the R&D requirements, and innovations required in different scientific fields (including materials science) to develop these technologies is conducted. At the same time, as other factors such as sustainability, climate change and security of supply concerns can greatly affect the direction of the transition processes, that includes R&D activities and investment in alternative energy technologies, an overview of these factors is also provided. The analysis employs a new theoretical framework that combines two well established theories in the literature, Techno-economic Transitions and Large Technological Systems. By using this new framework, the technological transition towards a hydrogen energy system can be analysed at three levels, (global, national and local). The analysis is narrowed down to the local level in order to determine the timing of a transition in London and how it can form the foundation for a wider a transition at the national level based on alternative technologies

Ai'syah, Neta F. 2015. Application Data Processing Officer at the Department of Forestry Ogan Ogan Ilir. Data processing personnel at the Department of Forestry Ogan Ogan Ilir still using Microsoft Office software whose function is not yet particularly in view of the processing of employee data, which includes employee data, a data list ranks sequence, the data leave a letter and letters or official duties and making monthly attendance report has not been automated. This will certainly hamper and require a long time in processing the data. Therefore, the authors feel the need to build an application that is more effective and efficient with the aim of getting an application personnel data processing take place there. In addition, application development is expected to provide benefits to the Polytechnic of Sriwijaya in order to become a reference of knowledge in the field of the Information Technology for all other students. The research methods used were interviews, observation, and document analysis. In developing the system the author uses the method waterfall (waterfall). The results of this study in the form of Application Data Processing Officer at the Department of Forestry Ogan Ogan Ilir using the programming language PHP and MySQL database. Keywords: Applications, waterfall method (waterfall), staffing, Forestry, database, PHP, MySQL

The Feasibility of Small Farms Growing Hops and Specialty Grains Profitably in Howard County

Final project for BUS758Q: MBA Consulting Practicum (Spring 2016). Robert H. Smith School of Business, University of Maryland, College Park. This project assessed the potential profitability of growing hops and grains for alcohol production on the fewer than 200 farms of 520 acres in Howard County, MD. Currently, few of Howard’s farms are able to make a profit on an annual basis and none of the farms made more than $10,000 in annual sales in 2012. This is due to high operating costs and thin margins on agricultural products. The County’s farmers have a mix of farming experience, ranging from lifelong farmers to those who have acquired farms in the last few years. This report provides background on the basics of growing hops and grain crops, assesses the market for these agricultural products in the Baltimore/DC region, and makes recommendations for farmers to profitably grow these crops. To develop this report, the team conducted site visits and interviews with farmers, farm bureau representatives, University of Maryland agricultural faculty and extension school subject matter experts, and the owners and staff of local breweries, distilleries and homebrew shops. The team also reviewed data from the Howard County Farm Bureau and the USDA Census and conducted academic and industry research on hops and specialty grain farming in the Northeast.Howard Count
