University Scholar Series: Ed Cohen
Mental Health and Cultural Context in Vietnam
On May 6, 2015, Dr. Ed Cohen spoke in the University Scholar Series hosted by Provost Andy Feinstein at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library. In this presentation, Dr. Cohen explored current research about mental illness and approaches to treatment in Vietnam, in addition to this country’s world view about illness, wellness and emotional health. A partire dal rapporto tra conoscenza ed esperienza, il saggio prende in esame la questione di una possibile relazione tra conoscenza etica ed esperienza morale nel neokantiano Hermann Cohen. Se l’esperienza morale, in senso kantiano, è l’esperienza del conflitto tra inclinazione e dovere (Neigung und Pflicht), e la conoscenza etica non è il sapere dell’esperienza in quanto non si rifà al dato, sembra possibile pensare ad una realtà etica che non si basa sull’esperienza ma che ha sempre bisogno di realizzarsi nell’esperienza. La tesi del saggio è che il rapporto tra conoscenza e realtà, tra esperienza morale ed esperienza vissuta va sempre inteso a partire dalla centrale categoria coheniana della Idealisierung

Author investigates the way in which immunology influences the perception of both the human body, and political entities, demonstrating that contemporary conceptualizations of these phenomena exist in a double bind. The historical framework Cohen applies allows for tracing the history of the metaphor of immunity in politics and medicine
