The Current Value of the Mathematical Provision: A Financial Risk Prospect

    No full text
The paper addresses the question of the calculation of the current value of the mathematical provision and moulds it in a deterministic and stochastic scenario, using a proper term structure of interest rates estimated by means of a Cox-Ingersoll-Ross model. It provides a complete and original year-by-year evaluation model for the business performance, and a closed solution for the current evaluation of the reserve, together with a comprehensive insight into the dynamics of the reserve connected to the selection of a defined term structure of interest rates. Moreover, the calculation of the VaR of the mathematical provision is prospected as risk measure useful to appreciate also the evaluation rate risk. Future research prospects concern the selection of the stochastic process used to describe the dynamics of the interest rates and the possible managerial and regulatory application of a VaR measure. The modelling has been applied, as an exemplification, to a life annuity portfolio but it can be easily replicated for any kind of policy and any kind of portfolios even non homogeneous

Building landscapes of stone: two compositional paradigms = Costruire paesaggi di pietra: due paradigmi della composizione

The contribution proposes a critical rereading of two exceptional residential projects – built in the second half of the 20th century – in which the art of dry-stone walling is not only the admirable technical application of an ancient knowledge, but also, and above all, a fertile field of compositional experimentation on the relationship between nature and artifice. The stone substructures of the terraced landscapes are indeed the common point of convergence between Bruno Morassutti's villa von Saurma in Termini di Massa Lubrense (1961-62) and Eduardo Souto de Moura's house in Moledo (1991-98). Two projects far apart in time and space, yet both paradigmatic of the extraordinary expressive possibilities of an "architecture of stone" capable of combining a modern vision of inhabiting with the consolidated traditions and techniques of the local culture. The article focuses on the ways in which the encounter between soil and architecture has been declined in these two case-studies, in order to rediscover a possible consonance between contemporary housing design and landscape protection

Usage of Stock Index Option: Evidence from the Italian Market

    No full text
The paper addresses the question of the usage of stock index option, with reference to both directional strategies and volatility based strategies. The issue of the paper is twofold. Firstly there is a full analysis of possible strategy implementation with reference to the underlying price and volatility expectations. In this section we depict a complete “map” of the potential decision-making processes involved in option trading, according to the relevant expectations. Secondly, the analytical model is applied to the Italian Stock Index Option Market, with the final aim to identify which strategy prevails within the market

Artificial intelligence for epigenetics: Towards personalized medicine

    No full text
Epigenetics is a field of biological sciences focused on the study of reversible, heritable changes in gene function, not due to modifications of the genomic sequence. These changes are the result of a complex cross-talk between several molecular mechanisms that is in turn orchestrated by genetic and environmental factors. The epigenetic profile captures the unique regulatory landscape and the exposure to environmental stimuli of an individual. It thus constitutes a valuable reservoir of information for personalized medicine, which is aimed at customizing health-care interventions based on the unique characteristics of each individual. Nowadays, the complex milieu of epigenomic marks can be studied at the genome-wide level thanks to massive, high-throughput technologies. This new experimental approach is opening up new and interesting knowledge perspectives. However, the analysis of these complex omic data requires to face important analytic issues. Artificial Intelligence, and in particular Machine Learning, are emerging as powerful resources to decipher epigenomic data. In this review, we will first describe the most used ML approaches in epigenomics. We then will recapitulate some of the recent applications of ML to epigenomic analysis. Finally, we will provide some examples of how the ML approach to epigenetic data can be useful for personalized medicine
