This thesis aims to assess the EU’s external energy policy and to what degree it has been embraced by small states during the energy crisis by posing the question, “How does European Union membership influence the external energy policy decisions of small states within the foreign policy dimension during energy security crises?”. To answer this, the research is taking Bulgaria and Serbia as case studies due to their similar population sizes, GDP, and energy consumptions. This research conceptualizes energy security and energy diplomacy to understand how diplomacy and energy dependencies are interrelated and how this relationship can be utilised as a tool in international relations. Through supporting the qualitative work on foreign policy analysis with the quantitative analysis of the energy industry structures and energy dependencies of Serbia and Bulgaria in a comparative manner, this research is conducting mixed research on the issue. The comparison of Bulgaria and Serbia enables the author to analyse and understand the role of EU membership

The environment of uncertainty created by the COVID-19 pandemic period has caused difficulties especially for healthcare professionals in their work activities. The purpose of this research is to find out which variables might affect the commitment of healthcare professionals to their works during this COVID-19 period. Based on the data announced by the Ministry of Health during the pandemic in the first quarter of 2021, it was decided to conduct a research on doctors, nurses, caregivers, and medical secretaries working in hospitals in the cities of the Eastern Black Sea Region of Turkey which generally show high risk. In the developed research model, satisfactory conditions (SC), emotional commitment to change (ECC), and psychological ownership (PO) as variables that may directly or indirectly affect the commitment of healthcare professionals to their works (CW) were used. The Smart PLS program was used in the analysis of the research model and hypothesis. It was seen that the ECC of healthcare professionals has a positive and significant (.694; p .086). Looking at the indirect (intermediary) effects obtained as a result of the research, it was seen that all of the hypotheses consist of positive coefficients. This situation reveals that the mediating variables have complementary effects on the obtained results. © The Author(s) 2022.WOS:00078698580000

Basilar impression in osteogenesis imperfecta treated with staged halo traction and posterior decompression with short-segment fusion

    No full text
Basilar impression is a cranial base abnormality associated with osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) with serious neurologic implications but controversial treatment options. Combined anterior and posterior decompression with long-segment posterior fusion is often recommended. We report a patient with OI (Sillence type III) with basilar impression treated with halo traction followed by posterior surgery. The patient was a 12-year-old female with a presentation of hiccups and change in upper extremity function. Diagnostic imaging revealed syringomyelia, compensated hydrocephalus, basilar impression, and Chiari type I malformation. The patient was treated with halo traction followed by posterior decompression fusion from the occipital bone to C2. Bone fusion and improved syrinx were evident on images during the 5 years of follow-up. Five years after surgery, syrinx recurred and the fourth ventricular catheter was revised. The treatment with halo traction followed by posterior-only surgery of basilar impression associated with OI resulted in a good postoperative outcome

The Department of German Language and Literature at Hacettepe University and the Information Center of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) in Ankara offered a workshop for interested Master and PhD candidates in 2018-19. The topic was on cultural concepts in the work "A Winter in Istanbul" by Angelika Overath. In this workshop, participants should evolve hypotheses according to the novel. In preparation for this face-to-face workshop, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Mutlu ER and Assoc. Prof. Dr. Max Florian HERTSCH gave lectures on the thematic complexes of culture, identity, discourse-analysis and hypothesis research. The main value of the workshop was that students were able to ask questions from the novel directly to the author based on their hypotheses. In order to save and provide the data to other scientists, the decision was taken to record and then to transcribe the workshop

A reading of Thoreau's walking as a travel narrative

Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e Expressão. Programa de Pós-Graduação em Letras/Inglês e Literatura Correspondente. This thesis analyzes Henry David Thoreau's essay "Walking," first published after his death in 1862, with respect to the history of the United States and European travel accounts in Imperial times. Attentive reader of European nature writers and explorers, Thoreau was recalled by poets and literature writers, and also became celebrated by the field of environmental studies, being referred as founder of ecology. Thoreau's walks in wilderness, accounted in "Walking," contradict and at the same time endorse the means through which the United States people were running west at the time: he frequently goes in the same direction, but shows no hurry to get at any place, and calmly searches for what is "holy" along the path. Thoreau's emphatic discourse against private property confronts the main United State's principles, while the author creates his figure as a hero of the individual rebelliousness, a defendant of his own way to walk. Like in other travel accounts where the narrator finds himself in an uncivilized space, the "I," who is the hero of the narrative, sees his western horizon as empty of culture, a place to be founded, this time, upon a new mythology grounded on nature. "Walking" is read here as a transcendental manifesto about movement and perception that is much related to the history of its composition and to its readings since then.
