Technology Adoption under Relative Factor Price Uncertainty: The Putty-Clay Investment Model
No full textA plant has more flexibility in choosing among different technologies before undertaking an investment than after installing a specific machine. This paper argues that the irreversibility of factor intensity choice may play an important role in explaining the dynamics of investment in the presence of relative factor price uncertainty. A higher degree of irreversibility in the choice of factor intensity---characterized by the ex ante elasticity of substitution between different factors---leads to a larger negative effect of uncertainty in relative factor prices on investment. The empirical implications of the putty-clay investment model are examined using the plant-level Chilean manufacturing data for the period of time-varying exchange rate volatility. The econometric results show that the elasticity of substitution between imported materials and domestic materials is substantially higher at the time of a large investment and suggest that the irreversibility of factor intensity choice may potentially play an important role in explaining the impact of exchange rate volatility on investmentirreversible investment; putty-clay; technology adoption; uncertainty

No full textThis essay is steeped in contradiction: it is as much an attempt at mourning, coping, and letting go as it is an exercise in remembrance, rediscovery, and reconnection. One of the many areas of international legal scholarship where Rob Cryer left his mark is his oeuvre on the International Military Tribunal for the Far East (IMTFE). To pay tribute to, and get re-acquainted with, Rob-the-person, I re-read his 2010 article on the ‘dignified dissenter’ in Tokyo, Dutch Judge Bert Röling. In that article, Rob uses the memoranda and the opinion of Bert-the-judge to assess his conceptual and legal contributions to the IMTFE judgment. They also serve him as a vehicle to get a better grasp of the author behind the text and the values and dilemmas that shaped Röling’s positions on the IMTFE bench. What more can we learn and understand about Rob Cryer while ‘reading Rob reading Bert’? What aspects of Röling’s legacy did he choose to foreground, and what qualities did he appreciate most? How did Rob treat his character when shedding light on the more contentious elements of Röling’s work? Even if this essay fails in its therapeutic purpose, it might still add a few mosaic pieces to the collective construction of Rob’s portrait in this volume

Physiological, perceptual, and technical responses to on-court tennis training on hard and clay courts
No full textThe aim of this study was to investigate the effect of court surface (clay vs. hard court) on technical, physiological, and perceptual responses to on-court tennis training. Four high-performance junior male players performed 2 identical training sessions on hard and clay courts, respectively. Sessions included both physical conditioning and technical elements as led by the coach. Each session was filmed for later notational analysis of stroke count and error rates. Furthermore, players wore a global positioning satellite device to measure distance covered during each session, while heart rate, countermovement jump distance, and capillary blood measures of metabolites were measured before, during, and after each session. Additionally, a respective coach and athlete rating of perceived exertion (RPE) were measured after each session. Total duration and distance covered during each session were comparable (p > 0.05; d 0.05; d 0.05; d > 0.90). Furthermore, large effects for increased heart rate, blood lactate, and RPE values were evident on clay compared with hard courts (p > 0.05; d > 0.90). Additionally, although player and coach RPE on hard courts were similar, there were large effects for coaches to underrate the RPE of players on clay courts (p > 0.05; d > 0.90). In conclusion, training on clay courts results in trends for increased heart rate, lactate, and RPE values, suggesting that sessions on clay courts tend towards higher physiological and perceptual loads than hard courts. Furthermore, coaches seem effective at rating player RPE on hard courts but may underrate the perceived exertion of sessions on clay courts. © 2013 National Strength and Conditioning Association
