Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Latinoamérica con voz de mujer : un análisis de la identidad latinoamericana y femenina en cuatro novelas de Gioconda Belli
Get PDFEn esta tesis se realiza un análisis interdisciplinar de cuatro novelas de la escritora nicaragüense Gioconda Belli: El país bajo mi piel, Waslala, El país de las mujeres y La mujer habitada. Se combina, para tal fin, la perspectiva feminista con la teoría poscolonial, además de trabajar con temas propios de los estudios literarios como la parodia, la autobiografía, los relatos utópicos y de viajes, las fronteras entre géneros, la sátira e ironía. El objetivo del trabajo es analizar la identidad femenina y latinoamericana en el corpus seleccionado; de ahí que se trabaje con los elementos que son intrínsecos al territorio desde el mismo momento de la Conquista como la exaltación de la naturaleza, la otredad, el mestizaje, la transculturación, la resistencia, la utopía, el viaje, lo maravilloso, la participación femenina en la lucha y en la construcción de la identidad nacional. Por eso, se indaga en las raíces profundas de la pérdida identitaria del territorio, en la mirada fundacional y colonialista a partir de la cual se observa a sí mismo el sujeto latinoamericano, en la necesidad imperiosa de repensarse en medio de un territorio convulso y desde una posición periférica en relación al orden mundial, en la transgresión y creación de utopías como única forma de construirse. Asimismo, se pretende dar una respuesta desde el género al problema de la identidad, una respuesta desde la mujer, uniendo lo femenino a la naturaleza, a la lucha ancestral del pueblo contra todo tipo de opresión y vinculando a la mujer con la cultura tradicional perdida, con la propia tierra latinoamericana, con la Pacha. De esta manera, se brinda una respuesta desde el género y desde un lugar periférico al problema de la identidad, creando la visión de un sujeto femenino múltiple, diverso, permeable, mestizo, generador de vida y centro del cambio, de la resistencia y la utopía. El espacio periférico, ese lugar olvidado y marginalizado por las grandes metrópolis, se convierte, en estas obras, en el motor del cambio, porque es allí donde se encuentran las herramientas y las fuerzas para gestar esa transformación. Y es la mujer latinoamericana, como sujeto doblemente marginal (por su posición subalterna con respecto al poder que ejercen las metrópolis y por su lugar con respecto al poder masculino), la encargada de llevar a cabo la construcción de una nueva identidad nacional y mestiza para el territorio. Esa mujer múltiple, unida a lo ancestral y europeo, se empodera y agencia del cambio, convirtiéndose en un sujeto indispensable para la transformación política y social, para acabar con un poder opresivo y patriarcal y crear una Latinoamérica nueva que se mira a sí misma alejándose de la mirada colonial en la que tanto tiempo estuvo sumida.The present thesis carries out a cross-disciplinary analysis of four novels by Nicaraguan writer Gioconda Belli - The Country Under My Skin, Waslala, A Women's Country, and The Inhabited Woman. For that purpose, a feminist perspective is combined with the postcolonial theory, as well as working with other subjects belonging to literary studies such as parody, autobiography, utopian tales, travel stories, boundaries between genres, satire and irony. The aim of this work is to analyse the feminine and Latin-American identity in the selected corpus; therefore, it works with intrinsic elements of the land from the very moment of the Conquest such as the exaltation of nature, otherness, crossbreeding, transculturation, resistance, utopia, journey, magic, women's participation in the fight for the construction of a national identity. That is why there is a deep look into the roots of the loss of identity land, into the foundational and colonialist gaze through which the Latin-American subject watches themself, into the urge of self-rethinking amidst a convulsive land and from a peripheral position in relation to the world order, into the transgression and creation of utopias as the only form of self-construction. Likewise, this work expects to give an answer to the problem of identity through gender, an answer from women, joining the feminine to nature, to the ancestral fight of the people against all kinds of oppression, and linking women to the lost traditional culture, to their own Latin-American land, to la Pacha. Thus, from gender and from a peripheral place comes an answer to the problem of identity, creating the vision of a feminine subject who is multiple, varied, permeable, cross-bred, life generating and a centre for change, resistance and utopia. The peripheral space, a place forgotten and marginalized by the big metropolis, is turned into the driving force of change in these novels, because it is there where the tools and forces to generate that transformation are found. And it is the Latin-American woman, as a twice-marginalized subject (because of her subordinate position in relation to the power exercised by the metropolis, and because of her place in relation to masculine power), the one who will carry out the construction of a new national and cross-bred identity for the land. That multiple woman, linked to that which is ancestral and European, empowers and achieves the change, turning into an essential subject for the political and social transformation, to end an oppressive and patriarchal power, and to create a new Latin-America which looks at itself as far from the colonial look from which it was engulfed for so long
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
Get PDFWe conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
