Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    No full text
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

COMPUTED TOMOGRAPHIC CHARACTERISTICS OF THE CISTERNA CHYLI IN DOGS

    No full text
Previous lymphangiographic studies have investigated the use of computed tomography (CT) for characterizing the thoracic duct and its tributaries in dogs. However, there is limited published information on the appearance of the canine cisterna chyli using CT. The objective of this retrospective study was to describe the features of the canine cisterna chyli in pre- and post-contrast abdominal CT studies. The presence, location, shape, maximum width, size compared with the aortic diameter (Ao:cisterna chyli ratio) and mean attenuation of the cisterna chyli were recorded from archived abdominal CT scans of 30 dogs. Breed, age, sex and neutering status were also noted. A cisterna chyli was identified in 26 of the dogs (87%). In 22 cases a cisterna chyli could be reliably identified prior to intravenous contrast administration and in all 26 cases in postcontrast images. The cisterna chyli was most commonly located right dorsolateral to the abdominal aorta between L1 and L4. Shape varied on transverse images from crescent-like to globular and maximum diameters ranged from 5 to 9 mm. The Ao:cisterna chyli ratio varied between 0.29 and 0.71 (mean valuemales: 0.32; females: 0.38). On pre-contrast images the mean Hounsfield units were 21.3HU (range: -3.8 to 64.25). Mild enhancement of the cisterna chyli post-contrast was observed in 24 dogs (80%). Findings supported the use of pre- and post-contrast abdominal CT as a non-invasive method for assessing qualitative and quantitative characteristics of the canine cisterna chyli. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.

Ann Thorac Surg. 2010 Nov;90(5):1732-4. Surgical ligation of cisterna chyli: an alternative treatment for chronic chylothorax in children. Zanin A, Padalino MA, Cerutti A, Vida VL, Milanesi O, Stellin G, Bardini R. Source Department of Pediatrics, University of Padua-Medical School, Padova, Italy. Abstract Postoperative chylothorax represents one of the early and most serious complications after cardiothoracic operations. When conservative measures are not effective, an operation is mandatory. We describe a case of persistent chylothorax after a "one-and-a-half ventricle" repair in an infant with complex congenital heart disease, which was successfully treated with a transabdominal ligation of the cisterna chyli. At the 1-year follow-up, she is in excellent clinical condition, without recurrence of pleural effusion or the requirement for nutritional support. Ligation of cisterna chyli may represent a safe and effective ultimate treatment in children with persistent chylothorax. Copyright © 2010 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Published by Elsevier Inc. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Reference range of fetal cisterna magna volume by three-dimensional ultrasonography using the VOCAL method

    No full text
Objective: To determine reference values for the fetal cisterna magna volume by three-dimensional ultrasonography (3DUS) using the virtual organ computer-aided analysis (VOCAL) method. Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 224 healthy pregnant women between 17 and 29 completed weeks. Measurement of the fetal cisterna magna volume was performed in the standard axial plane of the transverse diameter of the cerebellum through the VOCAL method with a 30 degrees angle. for the determination of reference values, polynomial regressions with adjustments by the coefficient of determination (R-2) were held. the reliability and agreement were made by the intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) and limits of agreement of the Bland-Altman graph. Results: the average of the fetal cisterna magna volume ranged from 0.73 +/- 0.25 to 3.79 + 1.10 cm(3) between 17 and 29 weeks, respectively. Correlation was observed between the fetal cisterna magna volume and the gestational age (GA), best represented by a quadratic equation: -1.918+0.0284 x GA + 0.0065 x GA(2) (R-2 = 0.67). It was observed good reliability and intra-observer agreement, with ICC = 0.92 and 95% limits of agreement (-49.7; 48.4). There was low inter-observer reliability and agreement, with ICC = 0.58 and 95% limits of agreement (-114.0; 80.2).Conclusion: Reference values for the fetal cisterna magna volume by 3DUS using the VOCAL method were determined and showed good agreement and intra-observer reliability.Fed Univ São Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Obstet, BR-05303000 São Paulo, BrazilFed Univ Parana UFPR, Dept Gynecol & Obstet, Curitiba, Parana, BrazilFed Univ São Paulo UNIFESP, Dept Obstet, BR-05303000 São Paulo, BrazilWeb of Scienc

Cisterna Magna Injection in Rats to Study Glymphatic Function

    No full text
The recently discovered glymphatic system, which supports brain-wide clearance of metabolic waste, has become the subject of intense research within the past few years. Its nomenclature arose due to its functionally analogous nature to the lymphatic system in combination with glial cells that are part of its anatomical boundaries. The influx of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) from perivascular spaces into the brain interstitium acts to clear intraparenchymal solutes. CSF is produced by the choroid plexus and flows from the ventricles to the subarachnoid space via the cisterna magna, and as such the injection of tracer molecules into any one of these spaces could be used for studying CSF movement through the glymphatic system. Of these options, the cisterna magna is most favorable as it offers a route of entry that does not involve craniotomy. Herein we describe the cisterna magna (CM) injection procedure carried out in rats, essential for studying glymphatic influx and efflux dynamics
