Temporo-Mandibular Joint Functional Arthroplasty: Does It Improve the Short-Term Quality of Life in Patients with Painful Anterior Disc Displacement Without Reduction? A Retrospective Cohort Study
Background: Anterior disc displacement without reduction (ADDwoR) of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) often leads to persistent pain and reduced quality of life (QoL). Conservative treatments frequently fail to provide adequate symptom relief. Objective: To assess the short-term (≥6 months) effectiveness of functional arthroplasty in reducing pain and improving QoL in patients with ADDwoR unresponsive to conservative therapies. Methods: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 105 patients (median age 38 years, 80% female) treated at Santa Maria Hospital from January 2018 to December 2021. All patients had unilateral painful ADDwoR confirmed via MRI and underwent functional arthroplasty. Primary outcomes included pain reduction (VAS) and QoL improvements (QoL-TMJ questionnaire). Covariates such as age, gender, and baseline mood disturbances were analyzed for associations with surgical outcomes. Statistical analyses included the Wilcoxon rank test, Friedman’s ANOVA, and Spearman’s rank correlation. Results: Postoperative VAS scores significantly decreased (8.0 pre-op vs. 2.0 post-op, p < 0.001). QoL-TMJ scores improved significantly in pain (p < 0.001), activity (p < 0.05), mood (p < 0.001), and anxiety (p < 0.01), but no significant changes were observed in chewing and speaking functions. Improvements in QoL correlated strongly with pain reduction. Gender and age did not influence the outcomes, though females reported higher baseline mood disturbances. Conclusions: Functional arthroplasty effectively reduces pain and improves QoL in patients with ADDwoR, regardless of age or gender. However, limited improvement in chewing and speaking abilities highlights the need for targeted interventions. Future studies should assess the long-term outcomes to confirm the sustained benefits of this procedure
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Outcome of Facial Nerve Integrity After Parotid Gland Surgery With and Without Intraoperative Monitoring: A Ten-Year Retrospective Study
Background: Facial nerve injury is one of the most concerning complications of parotid gland surgery, with temporary and permanent dysfunction rates varying widely in the literature. This study aimed to identify factors associated with facial nerve injury during surgery for benign parotid tumors and assess the protective efficacy of intraoperative nerve monitoring (NIM) in preventing nerve injury. Methods: This retrospective study analyzed 329 patients who underwent parotid gland surgery between 2010 and 2023. Data collected included patient demographics, tumor characteristics (size, location, histology), surgical parameters (operation time, NIM usage), and postoperative nerve function evaluated using a modified House–Brackmann scale. Descriptive and inferential statistical analyses, including Chi-square tests and logistic regression, were employed to identify predictors of facial nerve outcomes. Results: Facial nerve injury occurred in 5.2% of patients, comprising 4.6% temporary and 0.6% permanent damage. Tumors located in the deep and inferior lobes significantly increased the risk of facial paralysis/palsy (p = 0.035), while tumor size and histology showed no significant associations. Using NIM significantly reduced the risk of facial nerve injury (p < 0.05; OR: 0.35, 95% CI: 0.25–0.50). Age was also identified as a significant predictor of nerve dysfunction (p < 0.05). Conclusions: The findings emphasize the importance of NIM in mitigating facial nerve injury, especially in anatomically complex tumor locations. Tailored surgical approaches based on tumor location and patient-specific factors, combined with the routine use of NIM, are recommended to optimize nerve preservation and improve postoperative outcomes
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Timing of Dietary Progression After Mandibular Fracture Repair: The Role of Comorbidities and Their Impact on Postoperative Outcomes
AIM: This retrospective study evaluated whether the timing of dietary progression after mandibular fracture repair influences postoperative complications (wound dehiscence, infection, and reoperation) and assessed how comorbidities, specifically diabetes and chronic kidney disease (CKD), affect these outcomes. METHODS: A retrospective observational analysis was conducted of 1023 patients who underwent open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) for mandibular fractures between 2012 and 2023. Patients were categorised into Early (<3 weeks), Standard (3 weeks), and Delayed (>4 weeks) groups according to the interval before the introduction of a solid diet. Postoperative complications were evaluated using multivariate logistic regression models adjusted for diabetes, CKD, and smoking. RESULTS: Early dietary progression was initially associated with higher rates of wound dehiscence (15.2% vs. 9.6% vs. 6.6%) and reoperation (8.2% vs. 2.0% vs. 1.6%) than the Standard and Delayed groups (p < 0.05) in univariate analysis. However, after adjusting for confounders in multivariate analysis, CKD emerged as the strongest independent predictor of wound dehiscence (odds ratio (OR) = 2.77, p < 0.001), whereas the impact of early dietary advancement was no longer statistically significant (adjusted OR = 1.08, p = 0.58). Multivariate analysis also identified CKD as an independent predictor of both infection and reoperation, with affected patients having an odds ratio of 3.85 for requiring reoperation (p < 0.001), highlighting the impact of systemic metabolic dysfunction on postoperative complications. Diabetes showed a borderline association with wound dehiscence, although it did not reach statistical significance (OR = 1.59, p = 0.067). CONCLUSIONS: Although early reintroduction of solid foods initially appeared to increase postoperative complications, CKD was identified as the primary independent predictor of impaired wound healing when adjusting for comorbidities. Progression to a solid diet after approximately three weeks appears generally safe; however, patients with CKD or diabetes may benefit from individualised dietary protocols that minimise mechanical stress on the fracture site. Prospective studies are recommended to validate these findings and refine dietary guidelines, based on individual patient risk profiles

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
