Your Only Thing Is Space.

    No full text

Imagination meets algorithm: redefining design practices in the coming AI age

The summer of 2022 marked the advent of accessible text-to-image tools, revolutionizing image rendering with distinctive styles swiftly. This generated a creative shift among designers, generally addressed as ‘prompt design’, although this expression scarcely captures the profound interaction between design and digital tools. This paper elucidates the potential synergy between designers and AI through one pragmatic workshop engaged by university students. Our approach was focused on an exercise to foster a rich imaginative process before the text-to-image creation. The result is a discussion over the relevance of structured imaginative process and the capabilities of generative AI technologies, supporting an enriched dialogic interaction between design and dataset-based imagery: insights on the different conceptual layers between AI and narrative, a discussion for the development of improved narrative & AI tools, and reflections on conceptual aspects of co-creativity in the context of scenario design practice and AI. By positioning AI as a tool for conceptual exploration rather than simple automation, the study offers a novel perspective on the evolving relationship between computational systems and design practice. The structured methodological framework, integrating speculative scenario design and iterative AI interactions, provides a replicable model for studying the practical dimensions of AI-assisted creative processes

Qualitative mapping and design strategies for taking care of marginal areas

The study targets the municipality of Quero Vas (Belluno, Italy), an area characterized by historical heritage and demographic decline. Employing a qualitative mapping from Raffaella Fagnoni methodology (Traces, Stories, Actions, Events, Imaginary) the researchers identified that the environmental heritage is one of the main strategic local contexts on which the designers can operate. This heritage is locally considered by two perspectives: the governance, committed to regeneration, frames the landscape as a resource for economic growth through tourism; the communities of hikers and climbers, frame the landscape as a resource for sharing experiences. The two perspectives currently don't engage citizens, who are excluded from a relationship with both. In this context of territorial design and marginal area enhancement, the study proposes a project centered on providing cultural enrichment for citizens. It aims to bridge the gap between economic and recreational values while promoting the collective care and preservation of the territory

Evasion Design for the Novacene Era Design and Production of Cultural Imaginaries

In this paper we discuss the use of evasion design, an overlooked expression from Superstudio, as a tool for shaping the future and understanding the Novacene Era. We propose evasion design as a tool to orient RTD (Research Through Design) activities for future exploration in educational and business environments, where a team not only needs to understand what a future scenario might be, but also needs to create a public discussion around its inherent values. Evasion design is here presented and explained in its differences from speculative design, but also in its sharing qualities and purposes in expanding the design practice. The result is a framework that combines both the potential of an alternative visualbased imagery and a guiding conceptual approach in rethinking the narrative of the future. By hybridizing codified methodologies of speculative design and the approach of evasion design, the paper shows the results of several workshops, conducted at institutions and universities, where the hybrid process is implemented through a specific methodology

Quero-Vas. Itinerari attivi tra tracce di memorie

    No full text

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
