Portrayals of working-class life in the authorships of Ragnar Järhult and Per Gunnar Evander

    No full text
The main purpose of this Master’s thesis is to analyse the portrayals of working-class life in a selection of works by the Swedish authors Ragnar Järhult and Per Gunnar Evander. The research questions are: * How is the working conditions described?* What political messages can be found in the works?* What image of the class society is shown? The second aim of this Master’s thesis is to analyse the concept of working-class literature and to investigate if the works of Per Gunnar Evander could be seen as working-class literature. Methodologically, the study draws on established theories, concepts and methods from the sociology of literature and the history of ideas. The core analytical concepts are ”social class” and ”working class literature”. This study shows that there are several similarities between the works of Järhult and Evander, especially in the criticism against the working conditions for the workers at papermills and tileworks. Evander is not normally seen as a working-class author but this study points out that the selected works from both the authors should be seen as working-class literature. The discussion on the concept of working-class literature reveals that it is difficult to find a perfect definition concerning the working-class literature. Every definition seems to be vague and that can either be seen as a weakness or strength. I like to see the broad description of working-class literature as something positive because a wide-ranging definition makes it possible to collect all the different aims and trends under one concept. Working-class literature should be seen as a broad literary current, not as a genre sharply marked off from its surroundings.

This thesis proposes (i) 5G Telkom University channel model simulated in Telkom University campus, Bandung, Indonesia, (ii) a framework to calculate and validate the channel model and its performance by using a real-field parameters of any locations in Indonesia, the 5G Indonesia channel model of several cities in Indonesia is derived based on the proposed framework. 5G Telkom University channel model is represented by the power delay profile (PDP) taken from a series of computer simulation by considering a real-field parameters of environments in Telkom University. This thesis also calculates the 5G Indonesia channel model to examine the proposed framework. The 5G Indonesia channel model is in practice does not exist, however it can be a reference when making comparison of 5G channel model in several cities of Indonesia. This thesis considers operating frequency of 3.3 GHz with 40 MHz bandwidth based on the specification of orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) numerology zero and the regulation from ministry of communication and informatics Indonesia about broadband wireless access in Indonesia. The obtained outage performance of 5G Telkom University channel models are validated using bit error rate (BER) and block error rate (BLER) performance of cyclic-prefix orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (CP-OFDM) numerology zero with 5G complex binary phase shift keying (BPSK) and Polar codes. This thesis found that when foliage does not exist, the 5G Telkom University channel model has smaller number of path. The results show that foliage attenuation causes performance degradations indicated by smaller number of paths and worse theoretical outage performance. The obtained outage performances of 5G Telkom University channel model are expected to be a reference of outage performance for 5G system implementation in Telkom University. Similarly, the proposed framework can be used to calculate 5G channel model in any locations in Indonesia such that an optimal 5G system implementation in Indonesia can be achieved

History, literature and (post)colonialism: politics and gender in Tsitsi Dangarembga's Nervous Conditions (Zimbabwe, 1960s-1980s)

    Get PDF
The main objective of the article is to analyze "Nervous Conditions," the debut novel by Zimbabwean author Tsitsi Dangarembga, originally published in 1988. The novel portrays the journey and intellectual/subjective development of Tambudzai (or Tambu), a young Shona girl in rural Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) during the 1960s. It focuses on her aspirations for educational opportunities following the death of her older brother, as well as the conflicts that arise from the clash between traditional African values and elements of modernity, particularly in relation to family and gender dynamics. Throughout the narrative, Dangarembga contrasts the experiences of Tambudzai with various women, such as her cousin Nyasha and her aunt Maiguru. These characters represent women who have attained educational opportunities and social mobility, albeit while facing conflicts resulting from their encounters with colonial cultures. The analysis of the novel, drawing on theoretical and methodological frameworks exploring the relationship between history and literature, as well as African studies, focuses on Dangarembga's work to investigate the processes of forming female subjectivities in colonial Zimbabwe. It pays attention to the construction of spaces for women's agency and empowerment within different social spheres, while also addressing the political debates and conflicts surrounding decolonization and the establishment of the Zimbabwean nation

    No full text
This article aims at analyzing the cons-truction of masculinities in Lésbia (1890), a novel by Délia, literary pseudonym of Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann (1853-1895). The plot narrates the background and the fictional trajectory of a Brazilian novelist, through which the author de-nounces social stigmata carried by women, especially middle-class, who wish to have a professional life in fin-de-siècle Brazil. Multiple male profiles presented in this narrative make it possible to reflect on how Bormann problematizes the construction of virility models that prevailed in the beginning of the republican period in 19thcentury Brazil, as well as their impact on gender hierarchies and contrasts. On the one hand, these profiles signal critical appropriations of naturalistic elements in the analysis of masculinity profiles, understood by the novelist as vain and petty, violent and irresponsible. On the other hand, they suggest the possibility of other experiences of the masculine, marked by erudition and sensitivity, capable of cultivating less vertical relationships with women, based on passion and valorization of the intellect.O artigo se propõe analisar a construção das masculinidades no romance Lésbia (1890), de Délia, pseudônimo literário de Maria Benedita Câmara Bormann (1853-1895).
