Mary as ‘scala caelestis’ in Eighth and Ninth Century Italy, in The Reception of the Mother of God in Byzantium: Marian Narratives in Texts and Images, M. B. Cunningham, T. Arentzen (eds.), Cambridge, Cambridge University Press, 235–56.
This paper explores the reception and reshaping of the theme of the Dormitio in homilies as well as in visual arts produced in early medieval Italy. Connected to other papers presented in the workshop as for the interaction between textual and mental images of Mary (Olkinuora), it also found a natural prosecution in another dealing with the development of the theme of the Dormitio in tenth and eleventh centuries Byzantine texts (Booth). The case-study chosen for this paper is an image of the Virgin Assunta depicted in the apse of the small ‘crypt’ of the abbot Epiphanius (824–42) in the monastery of San Vincenzo al Volturno, in the former Langobardia Minor, preserving the most important painted cycle in the early medieval central-southern Italy. Mary sits on a throne, holding a book where a quotation from the Magnificat hymn is inscribed. The throne, the crown, and five archangels paraded in the lower section of the vault, make her appear as the Queen of Heaven ruling with her Son, who is depicted on another throne in the vault above. The painted cycle of the crypt has been analysed by generations of art historians, among whom Toesca (1904) and Belting (1968) traced a connection between its contents and the writings of the Gallic author Ambrosius Autpertus († 784). He was a monk, briefly abbot, and a renowned theologian active at San Vincenzo al Volturno in the second half of the eighth century. In his Sermo de adsumptione sanctae Mariae – the earliest original homily on the Dormitio attested in the Latin West ¬– Mary is presented as reigning above the Angels with her Son. Autpertus quotes the Magnificat in celebrating the humility of Mary, a virtue that made her the celestial ladder to Heaven from which God descended to Earth and humanity can ascend to salvation – thus adopting a new metaphor in the West for describing her role in the history of Salvation. This metaphor is instead to be found in the Byzantine Marian tradition from the sixth century, and revived by iconophile writers of the early eighth century. The latter already connected the Magnificat to the moment of Mary’s transitus in their homilies on the Dormitio. Although the modalities of transmission of iconophile homilies to the West have not been investigated, it remains the case that Autpertus declares that he could not find «apud Latinos» anything related to the Dormitio, and that he then adopts a phrasing, metaphors, epithets applied in the Byzantine tradition to describe Mary, her Assumption into Heaven, her role in the history of Salvation. Interestingly, the mural painting with the Assunta pre-dates of one century the earliest Byzantine depiction of the Dormitio of Mary, which instead present Mary on her deathbed surrounded by the Apostles. The Assunta at San Vincenzo should not be explained by mechanically comparing it to earlier theological writings, but by reconstructing the modalities of circulation of theological concepts between East and West in the period of the ‘image struggle’, their influence on the religious mentality, and their eventual ‘translation’ into visual imagery
Multi-view clustering for mining heterogeneous social network data
Paper presented at the Workshop on Information Retrieval over Social Networks, 31st European Conference on Information Retrieval (ECIR'09), Toulouse, France, April 6-9, 2009Uncovering community structure is a core challenge in social network analysis. This is a significant challenge for large networks where there is a single type of relation in the network (e.g. friend or knows). In practice there may be other types of relation, for instance demographic or geographic information, that also reveal network structure. Uncovering structure in such multi-relational networks presents a greater challenge due to the difficulty of integrating information from different, often discordant views. In this paper we describe a system for performing cluster analysis on heterogeneous multi-view data, and present an analysis of the research themes in a bibliographic literature network, based on the integration of both co-citation links and text similarity relationships between papers in the network.Science Foundation IrelandConference detailshttp://ecir09.irit.fr/access.ph
Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation slowdown cooled the subtropical ocean
Observations show that the upper 2 km of the subtropical North Atlantic Ocean cooled throughout 2010 and remained cold until at least December 2011. We show that these cold anomalies are partly driven by anomalous air-sea exchange during the cold winters of 2009/2010 and 2010/2011 and, more surprisingly, by extreme interannual variability in the ocean's northward heat transport at 26.5°N. This cooling driven by the ocean's meridional heat transport affects deeper layers isolated from the atmosphere on annual timescales and water that is entrained into the winter mixed layer thus lowering winter sea surface temperatures. Here we connect, for the first time, variability in the northward heat transport carried by the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation to widespread sustained cooling of the subtropical North Atlantic, challenging the prevailing view that the ocean plays a passive role in the coupled ocean-atmosphere system on monthly-to-seasonal timescales
Variability of the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation at 26N
The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) and its variability has received considerable attention, motivated by its major role in the global climate system. Observations of AMOC strength at 26?N made by Rapid-WATCH (Rapid climate change - Will the Atlantic Thermohaline Circulation Halt) provide our best current estimate of the state of the AMOC. This study aims to improve understanding of ongoing measurements of AMOC variability made by Rapid-WATCH, and provide context for the 5-year timeseries presently available. The Rapid-WATCH system combines Gulf Stream transport, zonally integrated Ekman transport and mid-ocean transport observations at 26?N to assess AMOC strength. The Gulf Stream is found to possess a smooth annual cycle set by regional meridional wind stress, which is obscured on a year to year basis by internal ocean variability. Ekman transport possesses no dominant annual or semi-annual periodicity, and the seasonal cycle is obscured on a year to year basis by internal atmospheric variability largely related to fluctuations of the Azores high and the North Atlantic Oscillation. Sverdrup transport shows a dominant semi-annual periodicity which is strongly persistent from year to year but not seen in Rapid-WATCH measurements due to barotropic adjustment at these timescales. At interannual timescales, Sverdrup transport variability estimated from wind stress climatologies is found to exceed that of Gulf Stream variability, suggesting AMOC fluctuations of several Sverdrups have occurred over the past 30 years, partly related to the North Atlantic Oscillation. At decadal timescales, six hydrographic sections spread over half a century show that high latitude deep water mass changes have consistently spread to 24?N, with the DWBC their principal conduit into the 24?N section. Decadal changes in deep water transport of several Sverdrups are balanced by dynamic height changes close to the western boundary whilst water mass changes are largely density compensated
Intellectual structure and subject themes in information systems research : a journal cocitation study
Information Systems (IS) is a discipline in which research and practice are closely intertwined. IS is also closely related to and overlapping several other disciplines, including Information Science. Thus, IS provides an excellent case for examining the interplay of research and practice in a rapidly changing discipline. We explore the intellectual structure and subject themes in Information Systems (IS) research for 1990 to 1999 through the identification and analysis of the field's core journal literature. A core journal list of 100 titles was created and examined with journal cocitation analysis (JSA). JSA demonstrates that IS is a coherent discipline with research ranging from technology-oriented software and hardware to the application of IS in business and organizations. Journals are grouped into seven subject clusters: computer science, computer networking, computer engineering, information science, software engineering, human-computer
interaction, and management information systems. Information Science journals occupy a bridging position between technically oriented and application-focused clusters. ASIST publications, JASIST, ARIST, and PASIS, figure prominently in the Information Science cluster
Sexual harassment and implicit gender-career biases negatively impact women’s life expectancy in the US: a state-level analysis, 2011–2019.
Cunningham GB, Wicker P. Sexual harassment and implicit gender-career biases negatively impact women’s life expectancy in the US: a state-level analysis, 2011–2019. BMC Public Health. 2024;24: 1115.BACKGROUND: Despite some gains, women continue to have less access to work and poorer experiences in the workplace, relative to men. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationships among women's life expectancy and two work-related factors, sexual harassment and gender-career biases.; METHOD: We examined the associations at the state level of analysis (and District of Columbia) in the US from 2011 to 2019 (n=459) using archival data from various sources. Measures of the ratio of population to primary health providers, year, the percent of adults who are uninsured, the percent of residents aged 65 or older, and percent of residents who are Non-Hispanic White all served as controls.; RESULTS: Results of linear regression models showed that, after accounting for the controls, sexual harassment and gender-career biases among people in the state held significant, negative associations with women's life expectancy.; CONCLUSION: The study contributes to the small but growing literature showing that negative workplace experiences and bias against women in the workplace negatively impact women's health. © 2024. UK Language Policy Quo Vadis? Language Learning in the UK Post Brexit
This chapter offers both a systematic overview and critical evaluation of current MFL policy developments in all four UK nations, in view of their very different demarches, in particular concerning differences between England and other UK nations. After presenting current MFL policies both for the Primary and Secondary sector in all four nations, developments in UK language learning are critically evaluated from three different perspectives: a) public discourses around this topic, b) language learning in Anglophone countries in the context of Global English, c) implication of Brexit on the future of language learning in the UK. This evaluation leads to conclude that in all four nations, policy initiatives, including very ambitious ones -as exemplified by Scotland- are vulnerable to underreaching their targets, as a result of lack of longitudinal funding, poor long term planning and continual problems regarding staffing shortages and staff training. Implications regarding future UK language needs, and future EU relations, are also discussed
