The Way of Transformation (The Laban-Malmgren System of Dramatic Character Analysis)

    No full text
The dissertation is a 'critical edition' of a system of actor training based on three main sources: a vocabulary of movement analysis developed by Rudolf Laban in the last years of his life; C. G. Jung's theory of psychological functions and types; and the acting system of C. Stanislavski and his main followers. The three strands were brought together by the dancer and acting teacher Yat Malmgren (1916-2002), who taught his system for over forty years to some of the major figures of world theatre and film: Peter Brook, Pierce Brosnan, Simon Callow, Sean Connery, Anthony Hopkins, Adrian Noble among others. The dissertation is presented in two volumes: - Volume I sets the system in context, historically as well as in terms of current discourses about the nature of acting. It includes a survey of its origins, followed by an in-depth examination of its three main sources, focusing on the central concept of energy in acting. Further chapters describe: a. a systematic, step-by-step psychophysical approach to analysing character, the actor's own self and to ways of bridging the two in the process of transformation. The author captures the salient features of a method of work which informs aspects of Western acting practice. b. the light thrown by the system on the idea of theatre character. The author puts forward the idea of a character 'independent' of both actor and text. c. the applications of the system in training and professional practice, based on interviews with a number of prominent British actors and directors. - Volume II consists of a detailed, annotated description of the system. It is based on a free transcript of recordings of Yat Malmgren's teaching and amounts to a 'manual' for those interested in studying and/or teaching the system. The volume is illustrated throughout. Appendices include original materials derived from Laban's last years of work, published here for the first time

The author parallels Rudolf Laban’s approach to artistic inquiry, which he called a “thought round,” to critical pedagogy, which emerged in the latter half of the 20th century. Theoretical background on the topic of pedagogical theory and practice regarding dance-based dance literacy using reflexivity is explored. LMA, Labanotation, Kinetography Laban, and Motif Notation are discussed in relation to Five Standards of Literacy Pedagogy. The author introduces three articles featured in this special issue that focus on theoretical, philosophical, and epistemological perspectives on pedagogical practices within the realm of Laban Studies

The GH-IGF-I axis and breast cancer

MD (Res)Breast cancer remains one of the most common causes of death amongst women today. Worldwide approximately 1.3 million women are diagnosed as having breast cancer every year. Much research has been done in trying to unravel the cause and behaviour of breast cancer and hormonal influences are known to play a role. In particular, two hormones known as growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1) have been found to play an important role in breast cancer growth and development. It has been found that women with breast cancer have higher levels of IGF-1 in their blood compared with women without breast cancer. Further studies have shown that if IGF-1 is added to breast cancer cells in laboratory conditions they grow rapidly. This evidence points to a strong link between IGF-1 and breast cancer. The majority of circulating IGF-1 is made by the liver in response to growth hormone, but as IGF-1 is also found in most cells in the human body, it is uncertain whether its possible effects on breast cancer may be due to local production of IGF-1 by breast cancer cells or to IGF-1 circulating in the blood. This research aims to study the link between IGF-1, GH and breast cancer. In order to do this, small specimens of breast tissue will be taken from women who are undergoing surgery for treatment of their breast cancer. Most cells removed will be cancer cells, but a rim of normal cells will surround them. I will then look at the different levels of IGF-1, growth hormone and other related hormones produced by the cancer or normal cells. During further research, I will aim to keep these cells alive for a few hours and see how they respond when various hormones are added to them. This research will give us more information about the hormonal control of breast cancer growth and may lead to novel treatments for breast cancer in the future

Fool for Laban: An Adaptive Temporality and Stylized Movement Shepard Piece

    No full text
This theoretical performance thesis is dedicated to illustrating the potential fusion of Sam Shepard’s Fool for Love with Laban effort actions and temporality through music through a production plan. It utilizes evidence from the playwright’s biographical works as well as author experience and research rooted within the Laban movement analysis to develop a fully realized production. It examines the utilization of Shepard’s life within his work which includes the relationship between familial members; the utilization of rhythm and musicality to develop the aura of each scene; the character arc for each principle character and the necessity of music to drive the emotional development of each moment; and the temporality of the cyclical nature of the play implemented through time-based songs. This thesis takes into consideration the climate in which it is being theorized and acknowledges the difficulty of performing a piece within said climate. Accordingly, the author provides full plans to be utilized when live performance with close proximity can resume with acknowledgement of the potential changes throughout the process for each specific cast member and ensemble as a whole. There are exercises to attempt, questions to propose, and matters to consider within a production of Shepard’s plays during any production; the author realizes that the schedule laid out within this thesis may be malleable in action. Ultimately, this thesis aims to provide an assistive, informative, and accessible blueprint to illuminate the possibilities within a realism performance piece utilizing stylized movement pieces set to cyclical temporality music selections

Rudolf Laban (1879-1958) was a dancer, a choreographer, a theorist of movement, a writer, a pedagogue, a theater manager, the author of a new movement notation system, a painter, a caricaturist and an industry consultant. His influence has been crucial for the genesis and diffusion of modern dance and his career, extraordinary and controversial, has been the subject of several studies. The article analyzes two recent volumes dedicated to Laban’s thought and work and highlights their respective disciplinary, theoretical and methodological horizons.
