It chronicles the Chuman's incarceration from the Santa Anita Assembly Center, through Jerome, Rohwer, Tule Lake camps, and the Santa Fe and Crystal City internment camps as well as their struggle for restoring their U.S. citizenships in the 1960s. The digital collection consists of mostly textual material, including correspondence, affidavits, incarceration camp records, lease agreements, financial documents, receipts, pamphlets, and booklets

TAS2R38 (phenylthiocarbamide) haplotypes, coronary heart disease traits, and eating behavior in the British Women's Heart and Health Study
No full textBackground: Variation in the perception of bitter tastes has been associated with eating behavior, body composition, and cardiovascular disease. Recent observations have implicated 2 common haplotypes of TAS2R38 in the determination of bitter compound–tasting ability. Objective: The objectives of the study were to examine, in the British Women's Heart and Health Study cohort, any association between TAS2R38 haplotypes, coronary heart disease (CHD), CHD risk factors, and eating behavior and to examine whether the associations allow for estimation of the effects of variation in diet on the etiology of common disease. Design: We conducted a cross-sectional study of relations between TAS2R38 haplotypes and CHD, CHD risk factors, and eating behavior in 3383 women from 23 British towns. Results: Genotyping at P49A and V262A in TAS2R38 (rs713598 and rs1726866) allowed construction of all 4 possible haplotypes. The 2 most common haplotypes corresponded with previously identified haplotypes related to bitter compound–tasting ability. No substantial evidence of association was found between these haplotypes and CHD (odds ratio for taste-defining haplotypes: 0.97; 95% CI: 0.78, 1.2), body mass index (difference between means of taste-defining haplotypes: –0.084; 95% CI: –0.45, 0.29), or a series of physiologic and dietary characteristics. A marginally lower risk of diabetes was observed among those with the nontaster haplotype than among those with the taster haplotype (odds ratio: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.48, 1.00). Conclusion: TAS2R38 status was not an important determinant of CHD, related risk factors, or eating behavior in the British Women's Heart and Health Study sample
Genotype of galectin 2 (LGALS2) is associated with insulin-glucose profile in the British Women’s Heart and Health Study
No full textAIMS/HYPOTHESIS: It has been suggested that the gene encoding lymphotoxin-alpha (LTA) is associated with insulin resistance, and genetic association studies in the LTA region offer some support for this. However, LTA is in linkage disequilibrium with both the HLA gene cluster and the gene encoding TNF-alpha, making inferences about causality difficult. In this study, we used the galectin 2 (LGALS2) genotype, which affects LTA secretion but is located on another chromosome than the HLA gene cluster or TNF, to examine the relationship between the LTA pathway and traits of the metabolic syndrome. SUBJECTS: A cross-sectional genetic association study was carried out in 3,272 British women of European origin who were aged 60 to 79 years and were randomly selected from the community. RESULTS: Fasting plasma glucose and serum insulin were statistically significantly associated with LGALS2 rs7291467, with this association being independent of BMI and WHR. The mean difference in fasting insulin per minor allele was -4% (p=0.01 for trend by allele) and the mean per minor allele difference in fasting glucose was -2% (p=0.02 for trend by allele). When women with known diabetes were excluded from the analyses the findings did not differ from those for the whole cohort. CONCLUSIONS/INTERPRETATION: Our findings for the physically unlinked LGALS2, invite further study of LGALS2 specifically and the LTA pathway generally for their influence on glucose-insulin regulation
Gender dynamics in data collection on reproductive health: field experiences in Kerala, India
No full textReproductive health researchers tend to choose interviewers of the same sex as those interviewed. In many societies, it is considered unacceptable for men to interview women on topics of an intensely personal nature like sexuality or contraceptive use. In this paper, the author analyzes 21 interviews and 16 focus group discussions (FGDs) undertaken during a field study on the Quality of Services in the Indian Family Welfare Programs conducted in Kerala. The analysis was based on the model which identifies the principal participants in the interview as the respondent and the interviewer. In all these cases the contradiction between the gendered roles of the interviewer and interviewee are visible. However, if viewed in the context of the model provided by Briggs, it is clear that these contradictions are due to the differences in the social roles that the interviewers assumed and that the respondents ascribed to them and in the interactional goals of the interviewers and the respondents. Contradictions were also experienced during the FGDs. Educational sessions on contraception are a good tool for gathering sensitive information instead of the conventional interview, where the gendered roles are so crucial to the information gathering exercise itself
