The Dynamic Effects of Currency Union on Trade
A currency union's ability to increase international trade is one of the most debated questions in international macroeconomics. This paper studies the dynamics of these trade effects. First, an empirical study of the European Monetary Union finds that the extensive margin of trade (entry of new firms or goods) responds several years ahead of overall trade volume. This implies that the intensive margin (previously traded goods) falls in the run-up to EMU. The paper's theoretical contribution is to study the announcement of a future monetary union as a news shock to trade costs in the context of a dynamic stochastic general equilibrium trade model. Early entry of new firms in anticipation is explainable as a rational forward-looking response under certain conditions, where essential elements include sunk costs of exporting and heterogeneity among firms of a type known before entry. The findings help identify which types of trading frictions are reduced by a currency union. The important role of expectations also indicates that continued gains from EMU depend upon long-term credibility of the union.
(63(1):68-76) Distribution and Control of Pink Pineapple Mealybug and Survey of Insect Pests on Pineapple
本研究於2010–2012 年在台灣3 個主要栽培鮮食鳳梨地區調查害蟲之發生種類,結果顯示鳳梨嫡粉介殼蟲 [Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell)] 為最主要發生之害蟲,另發現椰子盾介殼蟲 (Diaspis boisduvalii Signoret)、菝契黑圓盾介殼蟲 [Melanaspis smilacis (Comstock)] 及台灣黃毒蛾 [Porthesia taiwana (Shiraki)] 等3種新紀錄害蟲。分析鳳梨嫡粉介殼蟲族群於鳳梨園中呈現聚集型分布,發現於鳳梨果實形成後,聚集部位以果實基部為主,且與果實可溶性固形物含量呈正相關 (r = 0.62, P < 0.0001)。檢測50% 撲滅松乳劑、50% 芬殺松乳劑及40.8% 陶斯松乳劑等早期推薦之防治藥劑及2% 農皂、90% 葵無露、60% 大豆油乳化劑及99%窄域油等4 種油類資材,對鳳梨嫡粉介殼蟲之防治效果,顯示經兩次施藥後至第21 d 調查,3 種原推薦藥劑均仍有良好之防治成效,惟4 種油類資材之防治效果則與無施藥處理間差異不顯著。
Surveys of insect pests on pineapple were carried out from 2010 to 2012 in three major pineapple cultivation areas in Taiwan. The results showed that pink pineapple mealybug [Dysmicoccus brevipes (Cockerell)] occurred more frequently than the other insect species, and three species of insect pests, boisduval scale (Diaspis boisduvalii Signoret), smilax scale [Melanaspis smilacis (Comstock)] and Taiwan tussock moth [Porthesia taiwana (Shiraki)] were newly recorded on pineapple in Taiwan. By analyzing the pattern of spatial distribution of pink pineapple mealybug, results showed that it was an aggregative type of insect in the field. Its population mainly concentrated on the basal part of pineapple, and was positively correlated with the soluble solid contents on different parts of fruit. The control efficacy of three chemicals, namely, 50% Fenitrothion EC, 50% Fenthion EC and 40.8% Chlorpyrifos EC, that were recommended for pink pineapple mealybug in the earlier time remained effective in this study. These chemicals effectively controlled the insect on the 21th day after the second application. However, four non-synthetic chemicals adopted in this study, 2% coconut oil, 90% sunflower oil, 60% soybean oil and 99% mineral oil, had no effect on pest control
(67(4):377-386)Control of Bacterial Wilt of Potato with Neutralized Phosphorous Acid
由青枯病菌 (Ralstonia solanacearum) 引起之細菌性萎凋病為世界馬鈴薯生產栽培之限制因子之一,其防治相當困難,目前尚未有合適之化學藥劑可供防治,僅能以健康種薯、土壤處理及輪作等方式加以管理。本研究利用亞磷酸與氫氧化鉀以1 : 1 (w/w) 方式配製成亞磷酸-氫氧化鉀中和液 (neutralized phosphoric acid solution; NPA) 後,於溫室中評估不同施用方法,連續施用4 次後對馬鈴薯青枯病之防治效果。結果發現當NPA 濃度為0.08% 時,以土壤澆灌法處理之植株其罹病度為40%,而利用葉片噴施法處理為92%,顯示土壤澆灌法使用亞磷酸溶液的防治效果較葉片噴施法更能降低罹病度。進一步於溫室試驗中利用土壤澆灌法試驗不同濃度NPA 對青枯病之防治效果,結果顯示使用0.05–2.00% NPA 均可降低馬鈴薯青枯病之罹病度,其中以高濃度1% 及2% 效果最佳,罹病度皆為0%;其次則為中濃度之0.1–0.5% NPA,罹病度為36.67–46.67%,低濃度0.05% NPA 防治效果較不顯著,罹病度為83.33%。然而,由於施用高濃度2% NPA 時,會導致馬鈴薯植株生長出現矮化及地下部無法結薯的情形,故建議使用濃度不宜超過1%,以避免藥害產生。目前利用NPA 防治細菌性病害之作用機制尚未釐清,藉由本研究體外試驗發現,NPA 具抑制青枯病菌繁殖速度之效果,隨著亞磷酸濃度增加,抑制效果越顯著,惟仍無法完全抑制其繁殖及直接殺死病原細菌。
Ralstonia solanacearum is the causal agent of the plant disease known as bacterial wilt, which is a serious threat to potato industry worldwide. Control of bacterial wilt is very difficult, largely being dependent on good crop management practices such as the uses of healthy tubers, pathogen-free soil and crop rotation. A greenhouse study was conducted to determine effects of neutralized phosphoric acid solution (NPA) on control of bacterial wilt of potato. The disease severity of inoculated potato plants was decreased to 40% when 0.08% NPA applied as soil drench, whereas the disease severity of inoculated potato plants was 92% by foliar spray application of 0.08% NPA. The results indicated that soil drench application of NPA provided better disease control than the foliar spray. Concentration effects of NPA on control of bacterial wilt of potato were evaluated through soil drench. A significant reduction in disease severity was observed at 0.10% and 2.00% NPA 28 days after inoculation and the disease severity ranging from 0.00% to 46.67%. At low concentration of 0.05% NPA, disease severity slightly decreased to 83.33%. However, treatment with a high concentration of 2.00% NPA was found to stunt potato growth and inhibit tuberization in greenhouse. Thus, application of NPA concentration more than 1.00% is not feasible. The mechanism of action of NPA is still unclear, as it only affects multiplication of R. solanacearum in vitro
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
