Fuzzy qualitative approach to address uncertainty in human motion analysis / Lim Chern Hong

    No full text
Human motion analysis is one of the most active researches in computer vision society nowadays due to its wide spectrum of applications. Current researchers have been focused on implementing sophisticated algorithms with the goal to achieve good recognition rate but such work are limited to some constraints or assumptions. As a consequence, these systems are impractical to deploy in real-world environment due to the abounded uncertainties in the human motion analysis pipeline such as human size variation, viewpoint variation, and classification ambiguity. Failing in handling these uncertainties could affect the overall system performance. In this thesis, fuzzy qualitative reasoning is studied to address the above uncertainties. Human modelling is the enabling step in the human motion analysis system where the identified person from a video camera will be projected and represented in a better model to ease the latter processes such as feature extraction. Improper care on the variation of human size and camera positions from the ground might results in a defect human model such as inconsistent human size, and odd human shape. Such defects will hinder the feature extraction process and the error in this step might be cumulated in the rest of the pipeline and deteriorate the overall system performance. In this thesis, fuzzy qualitative Poisson human model is proposed to generalize the human model in terms of sizes and camera viewpoints. Besides that, to recognize an action with independent to the human viewpoint is a great challenge in human motion analysis, but remains unsolved due to its inherent difficulty. Most state-of-the-art methods are found to be impractical where multi camera system is required to serve the purpose. In this context, view specific action recognition framework is proposed to capture and construct the view specific action model for the objective to achieve view invariant human action recognition within single camera. In the framework, a novel human contour namely fuzzy qualitative human contour is proposed for view estimation which helps in the construction of the view specific action model. Action recognition is the final step in the human motion analysis pipeline where the aim is to infer the action or activity from the video. However, classification ambiguity could abounded in this step such as the confusion in viewpoint, action, and scene context due to some similarity factors. These cases are denoted as non-mutually cases in the thesis as their results could not be fully distinguished from the others. Hence, a crisp or binary classifier may not be so effective to deduce the final output for these cases. As a solution, fuzzy qualitative rank classifier is proposed to model the non-mutually exclusive case in the training step and infer with the multi-label and ranking result. This is intuitively reflecting how human decision is made towards the ambiguous case. In addition, dynamic fuzzy qualitative rank classifier is proposed as the extension to overcome the heuristic method in the learning step. In summary, the collective impact of the above contributions will constitute to achieve a more practical and feasible framework towards the human motion analysis applications. Particular video surveillance system that ensure the public safety and lead to a better and safer society

Scattering Amplitudes of Massive N=2 Gauge Theories in Three Dimensions

    No full text
We study the scattering amplitudes of mass-deformed Chern-Simons theories and Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theories with N=2 supersymmetry in three dimensions. In particular, we derive the on-shell supersymmetry algebras which underlie the scattering matrices of these theories. We then compute various 3 and 4-point on-shell tree-level amplitudes in these theories. For the mass-deformed Chern-Simons theory, odd-point amplitudes vanish and we find that all of the 4-point amplitudes can be encoded elegantly in superamplitudes. For the Yang-Mills-Chern-Simons theory, we obtain all of the 4-point tree-level amplitudes using a combination of perturbative techniques and algebraic constraints and we comment on difficulties related to computing amplitudes with external gauge fields using Feynman diagrams. Finally, we propose a BCFW recursion relation for mass-deformed theories in three dimensions and discuss the applicability of this proposal to mass-deformed N=2 theories

This study aims at finding out the forming process of Hong Myung-Hee's author consciousness and the content of the embodied in 『Lim Geuk- Jungd』. Literature text can be explained in various ways. In fact author's experience, ideology, and social and economic conditions give us a lot of possibility of interpretation. The existing studies for 『Lim Geuk- Jung』 have only focused at the author's experiences or his ideology. But this attitude has overlooked the possibility of various explanations. To explain it objectively, the help of author consciousness prescribed by social conditions is needed. This study will borrow Goldmann's method for world-vision to grasp the embodying process of author consciousness more systematically and definitely. And on the basis of it, Hong Myung-Hee' s author consciousness will be traced. Highborn social position had shaped Hong Myung-Hee's early consciousness before he established his world-vision. So he could reflect himself and observe class conflict generously. Through the studying in Tokyo and working for Shin-Gan group , he had flexibility and an eminent sense of balance so that he could receive new thought without extreme self-denial. After all, this harmonious world understanding attitude bore his world-vision based on Confucian ideas and the popula consciousness, which made his author consciousness clear. Therefore, Hong Myung-Hee's 『Lim Geuk- Jung』 was written as the practical form of national liberation movement which was demanding in 1930's, embodying his author consciousness. The Confucian ideal world pursued in 『Lim Geuk-Jung』 is the world of correct nominalism order and the world of family-centered order. But it is destroyed in the social situation which is showed through the sense of alienation and immorality of Lim Geuk-Jung group. Hong Myung-Hee's interest in the lower classes appears in the utopian prospect related with characters of the lower classes and it shows the trial to rise above the restrained real conditions. First, Lim Geuk-Jung and his sworn brothers can change the factor of lack into the principle of unity in Chung-suk valley, the isolated place. Second, the marriage of Bong Dan and Lee Jang-Gon combines the dualistic value which is demanded to male and female, the upper classes and the lower classes. It symbolizes the future model which solve the real conflicts and harmonize. Finally, Gad-ba-chi is described as a sage who is beyond the boundary between the worldliness and divinity and between living and death. so he achieves the utopia. Therefore, 『Lim Geuk- Jung』 reflects the demand for sublating opposition between class literature and national literature and establishing the modern national literature. And 『Lim Geuk- Jung』 is valued as the work which shows the modern historical consciousness.

Antagonistic Roles of PhyA and PhyB in Far-Red Light-Dependent Leaf Senescence in Arabidopsis thaliana

    No full text
Leaf senescence is regulated by diverse developmental and environmental factors to maximize plant fitness. The red to far-red light ratio (R:FR) detected by plant phytochromes is reduced under vegetation shade, thus initiating leaf senescence. However, the role of phytochromes in promoting leaf senescence under FR-enriched conditions is not fully understood. In this study, we investigated the role of phyA and phyB in regulating leaf senescence under FR in Arabidopsis thaliana (Arabidopsis). FR enrichment and intermittent FR pulses promoted the senescence of Arabidopsis leaves. Additionally, phyA and phyB mutants showed enhanced and repressed senescence phenotypes in FR, respectively, indicating that phyA and phyB antagonistically regulate FR-dependent leaf senescence. Transcriptomic analysis using phyA and phyB mutants in FR identified differentially expressed genes (DEGs) involved in leaf senescence-related processes, such as responses to light, phytohormones, temperature, photosynthesis and defense, showing opposite expression patterns in phyA and phyB mutants. These contrasting expression profiles of DEGs support the antagonism between phyA and phyB in FR-dependent leaf senescence. Among the genes showing antagonistic regulation, we confirmed that the expression of WRKY6, which encodes a senescence-associated transcription factor, was negatively and positively regulated by phyA and phyB, respectively. The wrky6 mutant showed a repressed senescence phenotype compared with the wild type in FR, indicating that WRKY6 plays a positive role in FR-dependent leaf senescence. Our results imply that antagonism between phyA and phyB is involved in fine-tuning leaf senescence under varying FR conditions in Arabidopsis.(c) The Author(s) 2018

Stock Market Integration Between the Hong Kong SAR and the People's Republic of China - the Use of a Revised 'H' Share Model and Enhanced Institutional Support

    No full text
PhDBilateral, multilateral and regional linkages between stock exchanges generate increased sources of funds, investor return and product choice. Such associations can also lower transaction costs in both initial listing and subsequent trading, increase liquidity more generally in the secondary market and enhance investor protection and confidence in the stability and reputation of the market and the status of companies listed on the market. This thesis argues that the integration of the stock markets between The Special Administrative Region of Hong Kong ("Hong Kong") and the People's Republic of China (CTRC) is therefore a desirable objective and investigates how a more successful and substantial degree of integration could be achieved in this area. Integration, in particular, requires harmonization of laws and regulations. In 1993,H shares issued by PRC companies were first allowed to cross-list on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. This listing was made possible by the introduction of a new set of legal and operational rules promulgated in both the PRC and Hong Kong. This thesis expounds four models of integration, the H Share Model, the System Harmonization Model, the Mixed Harmonization and Mutual Recognition Model, and the Full Harmonization Model and argues that H share regulations are an effective way to further integration despite problems inherited from the PRC's 'pre-open door' policy. In considering other potential models, the European Union and the United States capital market are also considered as potential models for further integration of the PRC and Hong Kong stock markets despite the inherent limitations of the latter model. It is also proposed that enhanced institutional support can be used as an effective means of accelerating the integration process. Investigating both the feasibility and possible implementation of market integration within an appropriate institutional framework ensures an autonomous, legal and independent environment separate from the political realm

Thermal Modelling of the Ventilation and Cooling inside Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Generators

    No full text
Axial flux permanent magnet generators are of particular interest for power generation in harsh and confined conditions. Due to their compactness and high power density, the ventilation and cooling inside axial flux permanent magnet generators have becoming increasingly important for further performance improvement. This thesis describes the developments of a lumped parameter, thermal modelling technique for axial flux permanent magnet generators. The main aim of this research is to develop a fast and accurate thermal modelling tool which can be used for rapid machine design and ultimately, to replace complex and time consuming CFD analyses in the machine design process. The thesis illustrates the construction of a generic thermal equivalent circuit, which comprises of conductive and convective sub-circuits, to model the conduction and convection heat transfers and temperature distributions in the radial and axial directions, within these machines. The conduction heat transfer between the solid components of these electrical machines is modelled by an annulus conductive thermal circuit derived from previous researchers; whereas, for convection heat transfer between the working fluid (air) and solids, the author has developed two convective thermal circuits, which are demonstrated as the Temperature Passing Method (TPM) and Heat Pick-up method in (HPM) in the thesis. Several case studies were designed to investigate the validity and accuracy of these thermal sub-circuits with both steady and transient boundary conditions. Since all the thermal impedances and capacitances used in the thermal circuits are in dimensionless form, the developed generic thermal equivalent circuit is capable of performing thermal simulations for axial flux generators of different sizes and topologies. Furthermore, special correction factors were introduced into the developed generic thermal equivalent circuit, to take into account the heat transfer in the circumferential direction in axial flux machines. The thesis also demonstrates how the heat transfer in the stator windings is modelled in the generic thermal equivalent circuit. Two analytical models, which are the Simple Concentric Model (SCM) and Concentric-annulus Layer Model (CLM) were developed, for the evaluation of the thermal resistances of the stator windings. The results evaluated from these analytical models were validated by several numerical models and experimental results of two-phase materials published by previous researchers. Lastly, experimental validation of the lumped parameter thermal equivalent circuit model and CFD simulations was conducted. Heat transfer coefficient measurements were carried out on two separate test rigs, which were a simplified single-sided axial flux machine test rig and a large-scale low speed axial flux machine. The experimental results were compared with the numerical results obtained from both the lumped parameter and CFD models. Good agreement between the experimental, lumped parameter model and CFD results were found. These indicate that the developed generic thermal circuit is potentially capable of replacing CFD analyses in the axial flux machines design process

He is definitely regarded as〝Father of Taiwanese potery〞. Lim Tsong-Guan has written over 200 Taiwanese poems with Love and Sex. 90% of them was written after he was 50 years old, and all of them is his experience to make love with his six lovers. It is a rare phenomenon in the world and mankinds. This paper tries at writing about 40 of The Love and Sex in LimTsong-Guan’s Taiwanese poems. The author of the paper has visited and interviewed Lim Tsong-Guan nearly 30 times, in the interview He has insisted his viewpoint that he writes poems with love and sex, because he wants to prove and serch the real love in mankind and the world. The most beautiful and extremely perfect feeling in making love must be based on the real love between two lovers, Lim proves that his inspirations in writing sex poems was based on the experience of making love with his beloved lovers.

How do foreign currency derivatives impact firm value: empirical evidence from industrial firms in Asian countries

    No full text
Empirical research has shown that derivatives have significant impact on firm value. However, the relationship between use of derivatives and firm value is still vague as some studies have indicated a positive relationship while other studies have indicated otherwise. This empirical study aims to contribute to the literature of derivative use by further examining how derivatives impact firm value. The research design behind this investigation employs a hand-collected dataset encompassing a sample of 130 industrial firms from Hong Kong, Singapore, Malaysia and Taiwan from the period of 2008 to 2017. By examining how firms hedge long-term and short term foreign currency exposures with foreign currency derivatives, a clearer picture can be obtained regarding the hedging strategies on Asian firms. This study also examined the effectiveness of derivative usage through comparing the derivative assets and derivative liabilities of firms. This empirical research also studied the impact of utilising foreign currency derivatives in general, as well as different types of foreign currency derivatives, on firm values. The findings in this study are also compared between developed and developing markets to assess the difference and similarities of hedging strategies and firm characteristics of sample firms in both markets. The main findings of this study are as follows. Forward foreign currency contracts are the preferred foreign currency derivative to hedge both short-term and long term foreign currency exposures. Findings also indicate that with the exception of Hong Kong firms, firms from the other countries are experiencing effective derivative hedging on currency exposures. As for the impact of foreign currency derivatives, only coefficients for Hong Kong sample firms are statistically positive and significant. As for the type of derivative contract, foreign options are the only contract which is significant in affecting firm value. However, options are viewed negatively by market participants as evidenced by the hedging discount on firm value
