    Sixty Years of Community: St. Olaf Catholic Parish in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, 1952-2012

    This paper will explore how the parish community of St. Olaf in Eau Claire, Wisconsin, established in 1952, reflects the Roman Catholic Church, specifically at the local, state, and national levels in the United States. It will also discuss the various changes that have occurred in the past 60 years of its history in terms of the various locations of worship for the members, the growth of the community outreach programs, and the effects of the Second Vatican Council. This ecumenical council was a meeting of Catholic bishops from around the whole that brought reform to the Catholic Church and affected the relationship of the Catholic Church to the world. The parish at St. Olaf has grown from having only 125 families in 1952 to over 1,000 families in 2012

    Transient observations : the textualizing of St Helena through five hundred years of colonial discourse

    This thesis explores the textualizing of the South Atlantic island of St Helena (a British Overseas Territory) through an analysis of the relationship between colonizing practices and the changing representations of the island and its inhabitants in a range of colonial 'texts', including historiography, travel writing, government papers, creative writing, and the fine arts. Part I situates this thesis within a critical engagement with post-colonial theory and colonial discourse analysis primarily, as well as with the recent 'linguistic turn' in anthropology and history. In place of post-colonialism's rather monolithic approach to colonial experiences, I argue for a localised approach to colonisation, which takes greater account of colonial praxis and of the continuous re-negotiation and re-constitution of particular colonial situations. Part II focuses on a number of literary issues by reviewing St Helena's historiography and literature, and by investigating the range of narrative tropes employed (largely by travellers) in the textualizing of St Helena, in particular with respect to recurrent imaginings of the island in terms of an earthly Eden. Part III examines the nature of colonial 'possession' by tracing the island's gradual appropriation by the Portuguese, Dutch and English in the sixteenth and early seventeenth century and the settlement policies pursued by the English East India Company in the late seventeenth and early eighteenth century. Part IV provides an account of the changing perceptions, by visitors and colonial officials alike, of the character of the island's inhabitants (from the late eighteenth to the early twentieth century) and assesses the influence that these perceptions have had on the administration of the island and the political status of its inhabitants (in the mid- to late twentieth century). Part V, the conclusion, reviews the principal arguments of my thesis by addressing the political implications of post-colonial theory and of my own research, while also indicating avenues for further research. A localised and detailed exploration of colonial discourse over a period of nearly five hundred years, and a close analysis of a consequently wide range of colonial 'texts', has confirmed that although colonising practices and representations are far from monolithic, in the case of St Helena their continuities are of as much significance as their discontinuities

    Chen Huanzhang and his role in studying the history of Chinese economic thought in the West at the beginning of the 20th century

    The article explores the experience of introducing traditional Chinese economic ideas to Western scholars, using the example of Chen Huanzhang’s book “The Economic Principles of Confucius and his School” (1911). Chen Huanzhang was the first Chinese scholar who acted as an intellectual mediator in disseminating knowledge about Chinese economic thought in the West against the background of predominant efforts at bringing the achievements of Western economics to China. Chen Huanzhang spoke from the standpoint of Confucianism, and a unique combination of classical Chinese and American economic education enabled him to integrate deep knowledge of Chinese tradition with mastering the basics of Western methodology. Using little-known primary sources, the article analyzes the specifics of structure and economic terminology of Chen Huanzhang’s work, with priority attention paid to his interpretation of relations between production and consumption based on ancient Chinese classics. It was demonstrated that Chen Huanzhang strived to produce a modernized interpretation of consumption aimed at regulating human desires that was compatible with demands of economic development and the inheritance of traditional moral standards. Evaluation of the impact of the book on Western academic circles is based on the study of reviews published in the early 1910s (the author of one of them being J. M. Keynes). The final section of the article identifies the reasons for the evident growth of interest in the work of Chen Huanzhang in China, where he was forgotten for a long time

    A Rosary of Rubies: The Chronicle of the Gur-rigs mDo-chen Tradition from South-Western Tibet

    The mDo-chen bKa’-brgyud-pa school represents a little known Buddhist tradition from Mang-yul Gung-thang in south-western Tibet. It goes back to a Buddhist yogin known as Ma-bdun-pa or Ma-bdun ras-chen (12th/13th c.) and was later mainly spread by mem­bers of the Gur family. Although belong­ing to the “Upper ’Brug” (stod ’brug) branch of the ’Brug-pa bKa’-brgyud-pa school, the mDo-chen tradition has always been deeply infused with the “spoken teachings” (bka’ ma) and “treasure teachings” (gter ma) of the rNying-ma-pa school, and the cult of the “Seven Ma-mo Sisters” (ma mo mched bdun) was part­ic­ularly practised and transmitted by its members. This book presents a critical edition, an annotated translation and a photo­graphic reproduction of a manuscript copy of a rare chronicle of the Gur-rigs mDo-chen tradition written by Brag-dkar rta-so sPrul-sku Chos-kyi dbang-phyug (1775–1837). The text provides us with an over­view of the tradition’s development mainly through biographical accounts but also through pro­ph­ecies, prayers and praises for individual masters. The study concludes with two appendices based on the mDo chen bka’ brgyud gser ’phreng, a lin­­eage history composed in the 15th century, and the “records of teachings received” (thob yig) of three important mem­bers of the Gur family, thus allowing us to gain an insight into the trans­missions of the mDo-chen bKa’-brgyud-pa school and the interactions of its represen­tatives with other important Bud­dhist teachers up to the 18th century. The present work is a further outcome of the author’s investigations into the cultural and religious tradi­tions of south-western Tibet and the neighbour­ing Himalayan valleys

    The development of oxaziridine-based methionine spin-labels for EPR

    Methionine (Met) is a sulfur-containing proteinogenic amino acid playing various biophysical and biochemical functions. Due to its rare occurrence on the protein surface, Met has become a potentially great protein modification target without modifying and compromising other surface-accessible amino acid residues. Therefore, the physiological function of modified proteins will not be interfered with. Recently, redox-activated chemical tagging (ReACT) has become the first method to modify Met residues specifically over other nucleophilic amino acids at physiological conditions. A novel application of ReACT has been proposed in the Florence group: combining site-directed spin-label (SDSL) with Met-specific ReACT. Due to Met’s rareness on the protein surface, ReACT will only modify Met residues introduced by site-directed mutagenesis of proteins with a low risk of affecting the protein’s normal function. This offers potential advantages over the use of SDSL probes to modify cysteine (Cys) residues. The major synthetic target was the nitroxide radical N-carboxamide oxaziridine and the chemistry synthesis towards it started from the cheap and commercially available benzylurea. As benzylurea shares a similar size with the target nitroxide radical moieties, it was used to investigate and validate the synthesis of the N-carboxamide oxaziridine series. Additionally, various EWG- or EDG-substitution was incorporated into the oxaziridine to broaden the oxaziridine library and to investigate their effect on the protein labelling process. Next, different nitroxide moieties were prepared from the commercially available 2,2,6,6-tetramethyl-4-piperidone using various organic synthesis methods and techniques which were later converted into the N-carboxamide oxaziridine using the established standard oxaziridine synthetic route and eight different types of nitroxide-based N-carboxamide oxaziridines were successfully obtained. Next, the prepared oxaziridine library was tested against our protein model GB1 and three different mutated GB1 were prepared for this. Results showed that the prepared oxaziridine species possess a good Met labelling efficiency and certain selectivity

    The History of the Medieval Papacy at the Imperial St. Petersburg University

    The purpose of this article is to investigate the history and content of scholarly studies devoted to the history of the medieval papacy at St. Petersburg University of pre-revolutionary times. The tasks of the article include both the study of historiographical sources, and a survey of disciplines related to the history of the medieval papacy taught at the Faculty of History and Philology of the University in 1819–1917. The author draws attention to the fact that this subject of educational courses and scholarly research for a long time remained “unpopular” among St. Petersburg medievalists. However, a real outline of university research in the field of “papal history” in historiography still hasn’t been done. The main way to identify the required courses of historical and ecclesiastical nature was to analyze university editions known as “The Announcements of Public Teaching of Sciences” and “Surveys of the Teaching of Sciences at the Imperial St. Petersburg / Petrograd University” and now accessible to a wide audience thanks to the portal “History St. Petersburg University in Virtual Space”. The author also refers to the materials collected during the biographical and prosopographical studies of the Center for History of St. Petersburg State University and concentrated in a number of network dictionaries (“The Network Biographical Dictionary of Professors and Teachers of St. Petersburg University” etc). On the basis of the data obtained, the author draws a conclusion about the extent to which the pre-revolutionary university research in the field of the history of the Holy See was developed and promising in reality.This research was supported by RFBR (Russian Foundation for Basic Research), project No. 16-06-00528 “Petersburg Historical School (XVIII — beginning of the XX century): Biographical database and information resource”
