A possible mechanism of superconductivity in high-T-c cuprates
This paper derives a generic T-c formula by using the long-range phase coherence condition in quantum phase fluctuation of the order parameter. Taking the two-local-spin-mediated interaction (TLSMI) proposed by Liu and Chen [Phys. Rev. B 58 (1998) 8812] as a Cooper pair potential, and the T-c formula, this paper explains five basic experimental facts in high-T-c cuprates. The aim of this paper is to show that TLSMI is a possible pairing mechanism of superconductivity in high-T-c cuprates. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science B.V. Transformation through Transculturation in Chen Xi’s Comics
Chen Xi (1981–), aka Long Santiao, is a UK based transnational cartoonist, writer and illustrator. With the exception of Under the sky of Rome (Luoma de tiankong xia), an illustrated novel published in 2009 by Shaanxi Normal University Press, her work consists mainly of comics and graphic novels, some of them collected in a book titled Dreams and Shadows: Tales from Planet Xi’s Teahouse, published in 2015 by the British independent publisher Line of Intent, and others self-published or simply uploaded on her blogs. Since her style – playfully called ‘Sinophone pop’ (Pedone 2018)– draws upon different cultural traditions to shape original, fluid meanings, her work can be described as transcultural (Dagnino 2012). This occurs through the massive use of scripts and images ascribable to a Chinese cultural context (traditional folklore, wuxia martial heroes, mythology and fantasy), combined with European ones (Italian writers Buzzati, Calvino, Eco, or atmospheres from Britain’s Victorian era or London’s Swinging Sixties). In a skilfully crafted paradox, Chen Xi employs commodification, fetishisation and self-Orientalisation to create a personal neonomadic, transcultural landscape. The most recurring theme in Chen Xi’s work being that of transformation, setting off from this category, the chapter aims at exploring how the aforementioned policultural aesthetic elements are transformed in Chen Xi’s work to produce a “post-loyalist” (Wang 2013) atmosphere that transcends cultural essentialisms while also distancing itself from mere displacement, or even “in- betweenness” (Bhabha 1994). Interrogating the hybridity of the graphic novel/illustrated fiction as a genre to challenge the univocity of identity, the chapter also demonstrates that Chen Xi’s work is an act of creative agency to articulate a specific Sinophone chronotope (Shih 2011), in a continued questioning of the centre/periphery matrix that reflects the author’s transformation through active (trans)culturation empowerment
A Rosary of Rubies: The Chronicle of the Gur-rigs mDo-chen Tradition from South-Western Tibet
The mDo-chen bKa’-brgyud-pa school represents a little known Buddhist tradition from Mang-yul Gung-thang in south-western Tibet. It goes back to a Buddhist yogin known as Ma-bdun-pa or Ma-bdun ras-chen (12th/13th c.) and was later mainly spread by members of the Gur family. Although belonging to the “Upper ’Brug” (stod ’brug) branch of the ’Brug-pa bKa’-brgyud-pa school, the mDo-chen tradition has always been deeply infused with the “spoken teachings” (bka’ ma) and “treasure teachings” (gter ma) of the rNying-ma-pa school, and the cult of the “Seven Ma-mo Sisters” (ma mo mched bdun) was particularly practised and transmitted by its members. This book presents a critical edition, an annotated translation and a photographic reproduction of a manuscript copy of a rare chronicle of the Gur-rigs mDo-chen tradition written by Brag-dkar rta-so sPrul-sku Chos-kyi dbang-phyug (1775–1837). The text provides us with an overview of the tradition’s development mainly through biographical accounts but also through prophecies, prayers and praises for individual masters. The study concludes with two appendices based on the mDo chen bka’ brgyud gser ’phreng, a lineage history composed in the 15th century, and the “records of teachings received” (thob yig) of three important members of the Gur family, thus allowing us to gain an insight into the transmissions of the mDo-chen bKa’-brgyud-pa school and the interactions of its representatives with other important Buddhist teachers up to the 18th century. MPTP/MPP+ suppresses activation of protein C in Parkinson's disease
Endothelial dysfunction and disruption of the blood-brain barrier have been found to be associated with Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the mechanisms underlying these effects have yet to be elucidated. It has also been found that activated protein C (APC) displays neuroprotective properties. Presently, the effects of APC on PD remain unknown. Using a 1-methyl-4-phenyl-1, 2, 3, 6-tetrahydropyridine (MPTP) neurotoxin rodent model of PD, we found that administration of MPTP can reduce expression of endothelial protein C receptor (EPCR), an N-glycosylated type I membrane protein that has the ability to enhance protein C activation. However, the use of MPTP does not alter levels of thrombomodulin. These findings were verified in an in vitro study showing that 1-methyl-4-phenylpyridinium (MPP+) treatment leads to suppression of EPCR along with reduction of protein C activation in human primary endothelial cells. Importantly, our results display that activation of the transcriptional factor SP1 is involved in the inhibitory effects of MPTP/MPP+ on EPCR expression. We found that using 300 nM of the SP1 inhibitor MIT can abolish the effects of MPP+ on EPCR expression. Consistently, SP1 silencing using small RNA interference was able to prevent the inhibitory effects of MPTP/MPP+ on the reduction of EPCR expression and impairment of protein C activation. Shaking Table Tests and Stability Analysis of Steep Nailed Slopes
Shaking table tests were performed on five model slopes to examine the effects of the angle and length of the nails and the frequency of excitation on the seismic resistance and failure mechanism of the slopes. Seismic excitation was also applied to slopes at various angles. Experimental results showed that nails markedly improved the seismic resistance of all model steep slopes. Additionally, nailed slopes exhibit characteristics of ductility under strong excitation. The angle of the nails influences the deformation of the slope but only slightly affects seismic resistance. An increase in the length of the nails increased the seismic resistance of the slope and reduced the displacement of the facing only when subjected to strong excitation. The slope at an angle of 90° to the horizontal has a markedly lower seismic resistance than that at 80°. The rocking of the model slope was strong for the slope with inclined nails and the slope at 90° to the horizontal. The failure surface of the soil mass is approximately a bilinear surface; the pullout of nails from the lower rows of nails caused total slope failure. The seismic resistance of a nailed slope is categorized viz. response of the models by three stages: stable, seismic resistance, and incipient collapse phases. Critical seismic acceleration coefficients of all models are evaluated and compared with values predicted by a developed pseudo-static, limit-equilibrium-based slope stability approach, which postulates a two-wedge failure mechanism.Key words: shaking table test, steep nailed slope, seismic resistance, pseudo-static approach.補正完畢SCIEI紙本電子版CA
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Molecular structure of highly excited resonant states in Mg-24 and the corresponding Be-8+O-16 and C-12+C-12 decays
Exotic Be-8 and C-12 decays from high-lying resonances in Mg-24 are analyzed in terms of a cluster model. The calculated quantities agree well with the corresponding experimental data. It is found that the calculated decay widths are very sensitive to the angular momentum carried by the outgoing cluster. It is shown that this property makes cluster decay a powerful tool to determine the spin as well as the molecular structures of the resonances.Physics, NuclearSCI(E)7ARTICLE5null8
