    No full text
In late of 2010 and during 2011, the Arab countries saw a series of large scale political uprisings. Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, and other forms of social media have played a major role in the planning, acceleration, and even the preparation of some of the uprisings and revolutions that too place in the Middle East at this time. Social media was employed effectively to awaken the Arab people and to mobilize them to fight against repressive regimes in their drive for greater freedom and independence. This paper will discuss the cause of the uprisings. In addition, the role of social media in the Middle East before the revolutions and the impact it had on the uprisings and revolutions known as the Arab Springs will be examined.M.A.L.S.Includes bibliographical referencesby Samira F. Increasing Inclusion or Furthering Fragmentation? How the Global Strategy to Include Refugees in National Education Systems Has Been Implemented in Lebanon

The UNHCR strategy to include refugee students in host state education systems is intended to promote refugees’ access to quality education. However, numbers of out-of-school refugees far exceed the global average. To understand these persistent barriers, we examine how Lebanese teachers and school principals understand and enact inclusion for school-age Syrian refugees. We find that inclusion has been pursued in ways that reproduce education inequities in Lebanon. Our findings underscore the importance of accounting for the internal complexities that shape the implementation and appropriation of policies within refugee host states and the ways in which these complexities interact with aid structures.

his article is inspired by late sociologist Syed Hussein Alatas's theoretical and methodological frameworks on development in developing regions.it discusses the problem of uncritical imitation that is foundational to the structure of present "global" human development agendas, such as the un's millennium development goals (2000 – 2015) and the sustainable development goals (2015-2030).drawing on Lebanon as an empirical case study, this article proposes that the practice of uncritical imitation can be contradictory and lead to chronic dependency and underdevelopment.

Language as a tool for marginalization of disadvantaged students in Lebanon. (c2019)

With the influx of Syrian refugees to Lebanon, the attention of research has focused on the marginalization and vulnerability of these children including their access to school. A lot of the discussion in this field has focused on the inability of Syrian refugee children to enroll in mainstream public Lebanese schools due to the language challenge, in particular learning mathematics and sciences in English and French. This has resulted in segregating Syrian children in afternoon school shifts. However, this discourse overlooks the effect of the colonial practices on the Lebanese educational system and how it has marginalized a large sector of the vulnerable Lebanese children attending public schools since Lebanon’s independence in 1943. The study investigates the interplay between the colonial history of Lebanon, today’s educational policies and practices, and school outcomes of children from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds. It shifts the debate from the discourse of refugees being the problem to the inherited structural inequalities of the Lebanese educational system. The study follows a mixed method design with qualitative and quantitative components. It comprises a survey with students in addition to interviews with Lebanese and Syrian children, school principals, teachers, and parents. Classroom observations were also conducted. Mentors and trainers from the Lebanese Ministry of Education and Higher Education were also interviewed. Research findings revealed that foreign language was experienced as a barrier to learning and a source of marginalization by both Syrian and Lebanese students. The thesis raises questions concerning the language policy in Lebanon. It also questions the call to segregate and “dumb” down the curriculum for Syrian refugees in afternoon shift. Finally, it highlights the quality of teaching foreign languages in public schools and its effect on the attainment of children from disadvantaged socio-economic background.N/A1 hard copy: xiii, 75 leaves; ill.; 30 cm. available at RNL.Bibliography: leaves 59-71

This article is inspired by late sociologist Syed Hussein Alatas’ scholarship in development studies. It discusses the problem of uncritical imitation that is foundational to the structure of present “global human development” agenda, such as the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (2000–2015) and Sustainable Development Goals (2015–2030). Drawing on Lebanon as an empirical case study, this article proposes that the practice of uncritical imitation leads to misinterpretation of data, misconception of problems, and missed opportunity for realizing what Alatas calls “creative development.

The Poetics of Textual Thresholds in Ahcene El-Kharrat’s Collections of Poetry

Abstract: The aim of this study is to analyze the poetics of textual thresholds in the poetry of Ahcene El-Kharrat (1989-2019), to query their various dimensions, connotations and artistic features, based on the assumption that contemporary poetic text is no longer just a set of poems nicely written and collected in a book, but rather a mosaic of written texts, para (meta) texts, and thresholds related to their hypertext. The thresholds’ role is vital. Its importance cannot be ignored while formulating the general poetic context of the poem. The latter cannot reach completeness without its textual thresholds that opens up new poetic and artistic perspectives. We will shed light, in this analytical and intertextual research, on the thresholds of the poems in the collections of the Algerian poet Ahcene El-Kharrat entitled: Nabdh-al-faji’a (Pulse of Bereavement), Basar Al-Turab (Sight of the earth) and Shatah Al-darawishes (the Dervishes’ imagination).
