Compact objects in active galactic nuclei and X-ray binaries
In this thesis I study the inner-most regions of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) using
the reverberation mapping technique, and neutron star low-mass X-ray binaries in
quiescence using X-ray observations.
Using the 13-year optical monitoring data for the AGN NGC 5548, the luminosity dependence
of the Hβ emitting radius was modelled using a delay map, finding that
the radius scales with luminosity as predicted by recent theoretical models. Time-delays
between the continuum at different wavelengths in AGN can be used to probe the accretion
disc. Here, continuum time-delays in a sample of 14 AGN were used to measure the radial
temperature profile of the accretion discs, determine the nuclear extinction, and measure
distances to the objects. However, the distances measured correspond to a value for
Hubble's constant that is a factor of ~2 lower than the accepted value. The implications
of this on the thermal disc reprocessing model are discussed.
I present two Chandra observations of the neutron star transient in the globular
cluster NGC 6440 in quiescence, where the power-law component to the spectrum is seen
to be variable between the observations, suggesting that there is ongoing residual accretion.
From a Chandra observation of the globular cluster Terzan 1, I have identifed the likely
quiescent counterpart to a transient previously observed in outburst, and discuss the other
sources within the cluster. Using Chandra and XMM-Newton monitoring observations of
two neutron star transients (KS 1731-260 and MXB 1659-29) in quiescence I have found
that the neutron star crusts in both sources have now returned to thermal equilibrium
with the core. These observations also indicate that the crusts in both sources may have
a high thermal conductivity and that enhanced neutrino emission may be occurring in the
core. Finally, the discovery of an X-ray transient with XMM-Newton is presented, and the
other sources in this observation discussed
Radio sources in the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey
We discuss radio sources in the Chandra Galactic Bulge Survey region. By cross-matching the X-ray sources in this field with the NRAO VLA Sky Survey archival data, we find 12 candidate matches. We present a classification scheme for radio/X-ray matches in surveys taken in or near the Galactic plane, taking into account other multiwavelength data. We show that none of the matches found here is likely to be due to coronal activity from normal stars because the radio to X-ray flux ratios are systematically too high. We show that one of the source could be a radio pulsar, and that one could be a planetary nebula, but that the bulk of the sources are likely to be background active galactic nuclei (AGN), with many confirmed through a variety of approaches. Several of the AGN are bright enough in the near-infrared (and presumably in the optical) to use as probes of the interstellar medium in the inner Galaxy
Sewing the Body of Christ : Eucharist wafer souvenirs stitched into fifteenth-century manuscripts, primarily in the Netherlands
Books of hours in the fifteenth century occupied several social and devotional roles. People used them to store small objects, including metal badges. Although the cultural practice of sewing in badges was widespread in the late Middle Ages, nearly all of the badges were removed (by later collectors). This article examines the practice by considering needle holes and offsets in the soft parchment, which indicate the shape of the badges and where they were attached. Noting that vast majority of metal offsets in books of hours are round, the author posits that these were not impressed by pilgrims’ badges, as is often repeated in the scholarly literature, but rather by tokens that commemorate having taken the Eucharist. The round badges are the same size and shape and bear the same imagery as host wafers. Owners stitched such badges into their books’ margins at locations relevant to Eucharistic piety. When they were sewn into books, Eucharist badges reconfigured the book as a shrine that recorded a votary’s pursuit of Communion.Peer reviewe
Jan Bytnar „Rudy” w świetle relacji Danuty Kaczyńskiej „Leny” (przyczynek do sporu o religijność harcerzy)
Associating the current dispute in the Polish Scouting Association about the attitude of its members to religion with a similar conflict from the 1930s, the article presents two fragments of the account of Danuta Kaczyńska ”Lena” concerning Jan Bytnar “Rudy”. The first concerns the cause of the death of „Rudy”, liberated during the Operation at the Arsenal. According to “Lena”, relying on the accounts of Jan Wuttke “Czarny Jaś”, the death of “Rudy” was the consequence of the administration of poison at the Pawiak. The second fragment is compiled in the article with a short story by Danuta Kaczyńska entitled Confession. The story’s protagonist – Bitek, who in “Lena’s” account personifies “Rudy”, rejects Christianity and religion in general as sources of his ethical motivation. Taking into consideration who the author of the account is, the issues raised in the fragments should not be ignored.Wiążąc aktualny spór w Związku Harcerstwa Polskiego o stosunek jej członków do religii z podobnym konfliktem z lat trzydziestych XX w., artykuł przedstawia dwa fragmenty relacji Danuty Kaczyńskiej „Leny” dotyczące Jana Bytnara „Rudego”.
A Chandra Observation of GRO J1744-28: The Bursting Pulsar in Quiescence
We present a Chandra/Advanced CCD Imaging Spectrometer I-array observation of GRO J1744-28. We detected a source at a position of R.A. = 17(h)44(m)33.(s)09, decl. = -28degrees44'27."0 (J2000.0; with a 1 sigma error of`similar to0".8), consistent with both ROSAT and interplanetary network localizations of GRO J1744-28 when it was in outburst. This makes it likely that we have detected the quiescent X-ray counterpart of GRO J1744-28. Our Chandra position demonstrates that the previously proposed infrared counterpart is not related to GRO J1744-28. The 0.5-10 keV luminosity of the source is (2-4) x 10(33) ergs s(-1) (assuming the source is near the Galactic center at a distance of 8 kpc). We discuss our results in the context of the quiescent X-ray emission of pulsating and nonpulsating neutron star X-ray transients.</p
Model Predictive Path Planning of AGVs: Mixed Logical Dynamical Formulation and Distributed Coordination
Most of the existing path planning methods of automated guided vehicles (AGVs) are static. This paper proposes a new methodology for the path planning of a fleet of AGVs to improve the flexibility, robustness, and scalability of the AGV system. We mathematically describe the transport process as a dynamical system using an ad hoc mixed logical dynamical (MLD) model. Based on our MLD model, model predictive control is proposed to determine the collision paths dynamically, and the corresponding optimization problem is formulated as 0-1 integer linear programming. An alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM)-based decomposition technique is then developed to coordinate the AGVs and reduce the computational burden, aiming for real-time decisions. The proposed methodology is tested on industrial scenarios, and results from numerical experiments show that the proposed method can obtain high transport productivity of the multi-AGV system at a low computational burden and deal with uncertainties resulting from the industrial environment.Green Open Access added to TU Delft Institutional Repository 'You share, we take care!' - Taverne project https://www.openaccess.nl/en/you-share-we-take-care Otherwise as indicated in the copyright section: the publisher is the copyright holder of this work and the author uses the Dutch legislation to make this work public.Transport Engineering and Logistic
Lawyers on the Edge: What Happened to Rudy Giuliani?
Please join The Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law for the second in their series of book talks, Lawyers on the Edge, with Andrew Kirtzman, author of Giuliani: The Rise and Tragic Fall of America\u27s Mayor.
Andrew Kirtzman, journalist and author, has been following the career of Rudy Giuliani since the 1990s. His new biography traces Giuliani from the beginning of his rise to his role as Donald Trump’s personal lawyer.
Professor Jessica Roth, Co-Director of the Jacob Burns Center for Ethics in the Practice of Law, will lead a discussion with Kirtzman about his book. This is the second in a series of book talks exploring the circumstances that led certain lawyers to choose their controversial clients and to examine how easy or difficult it would have been for them to back away from the edge.

Chandra Observations of the Bursting X-Ray Transient SAX J1747.0-2853 during Low-Level Accretion Activity
We present Chandra/ACIS observations of the bursting X-ray transient SAX J1747.0-2853 performed on 2001 July 18. We detected a bright source at the position of R. A. = 17(h)47(m)02.(s)60 and decl. = -28degrees52'58."9 (J2000.0, with a 1 sigma error of similar to0."7), consistent with the BeppoSAX and ASCA positions of SAX J1747.0-2853 and with the Ariel V position of the transient GX + 0.2-0.2, which was active during the 1970s. The 0.5-10 keV luminosity of the source during our observations was similar to3 x 10(35) ergs s(-1) ( assuming a distance of 9 kpc), demonstrating that the source was in a low-level accretion state. We also report on the long-term light curve of the source as observed with the all-sky monitor on board the Rossi X-Ray Timing Explorer. After the initial 1998 outburst, two more outbursts ( in 2000 and 2001) were detected with peak luminosities about 2 orders of magnitude larger than our Chandra luminosity. Our Chandra observation falls between those two outbursts, making the outburst history for SAX J1747.0-2853 complex. Those bright 2000 and 2001 outbursts, combined with the likely extended period of low-level activity between those outbursts, strongly suggest that the classification of SAX J1747.0-2853 as a faint X-ray transient was premature. It might be possible that the other faint X-ray transients can also exhibit bright, extended outbursts that would eliminate the need for a separate subclass of X-ray transients. We discuss our results also in the context of the behavior of X-ray binaries accreting at low levels with luminosities around 10(35) ergs s(-1), a poorly studied accretion rate regime.</p
