The status of human rights in post-Arab Spring. (c2015)

    No full text
This thesis examines the relationship between the global human rights regime and the post-Arab Spring constitutional transition, taking Egypt and Tunisia as a comparative case study. First, it assesses hypothetical claim of global human rights regime having played a critical role in catalyzing the equal rights movements in both countries. Second, it reviews post-revolution constitutional changes as well as global human rights development indicators in Tunisia and Egypt in order to determine the extent to which new global human rights principles have been imbedded in the new political foundations. The comparative analysis highlights significant impacts of globalization in inspiring Arab Spring human rights movements. Yet, comparative differences reveal that Tunisia has fared better than Egypt in the formulation and implementation of human rights principles during its transitional period. Egypt’s economic challenges are among the major obstacles undermining the advancement of human rights agenda. Economic developments and social equity remain critical prerequisite for the integration of human rights and political reforms in the region.N/A1 hard copy: xi, 62 leaves; ill.; 30 cm. available at RNL.Includes bibliographical references (leaves 57-62)

Nurses’ Experiences of Language Barriers in Healthcare : A qualitative review

    No full text
Background: I relation with the increased migration over the past decade, the Swedish health care has encountered an increasingly heterogeneous working class. The increasingly heterogeneous work environment has meant that nurses encounter new challenges that affect nursing work, where the language barrier between patient and nurse has a negative impact on the care provided. When communication between these two parties is lacking, patient safety is jeopardized. Thus, communication is crucial and fundamental to achieve good quality of care where patients’ individual needs can be met. Aim: The aim of the literature study was to compile nurses' experiences of language barriers in communication within health care. Method: The essay is based on a compilation of twelve literature studies with a qualitative approach. A systematic literature study based on scientific publications that deal with scientific studies. The database search was performed in CINAHL and PubMed and focuses on nursing. The studies were reviewed according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria. The quality of the studies was then reviewed based on SBU's quality review template and the content was analyzed using content analysis to identify relevant themes. Results: The results of the literature study are presented based on three themes, which includes: language barriers as a challenge, communication with interpreters and barriers to cultural understanding. The identified themes include five subthemes. Conclusion: Language barriers affect nurse's nursing work. When language barriers exist, the exchange of information between nurse and patient is limited. Working from a holistic approach cannot be maintained and nursing is affected

Reading Bodies: Aesthetics, Gender, and Family in the Eighteenth-Century Chinese Novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words)

    No full text
This dissertation focuses on the Mid-Qing novel Guwangyan (Preposterous Words, preface dated, 1730s) which is a newly discovered novel with lots of graphic sexual descriptions. Guwangyan was composed between the publication of Jin Ping Mei (The Plum in the Golden Vase, 1617) and Honglou meng (Dream of the Red Chamber, 1791). These two masterpieces represent sexuality and desire by presenting domestic life in polygamous households set within a larger social landscape. This dissertation explores the factors that shifted the literary discourse from the pornographic description of sexuality in Jin Ping Mei, to the representation of chaste love in Honglou meng. This dissertation can be divided into three parts. Part one: Chapter I and II introduce my main approach to interpret the text and the historical and aesthetic context of this novel. Chapter I introduces a large historical background of the late Ming and early Qing China from the aspects of the printing industry, gender politics and the literary criticism. I argue that the blurry boundaries between genres assigned by the May Fourth scholars do not fully satisfy the reading of Guwangyan. My reading, however, scrutinizes the textual body of Guwangyan to explore the material body and body politics demonstrated in the fictional world. Chapter II explains the meaning of the title of the text, the author, commentator, the commentary, and the current studies of Guwangyan. The second part, Chapter III and IV, illustrate a close-reading of the aesthetic body of the text. Chapter III proposes that Guwangyan is a well organized novel which has a carefully designed narrative structure and internal connections among chapters. Chapter IV demonstrates the importance of characterization in the novel. I argue that through a non-polarized yin-yang dichotomy and the yin-zhen contrast, the text demonstrates the uncertainty, transformation, and development of the characters and explores their complicated inner world. The third part, Chapter V and VI, explore two important subjects of Guwangyan, masculinity and the family. Guwangyan represents the male friendship and male same-sex relationship and how they can interact with men’s role in the public and private spheres. Chapter VI broadens the discussion of the family relationship in Guwangyan to include a much larger political landscape. I argue that the latter part of the novel establishes a significant contrast between a realistic representation of political disasters and an idealistic description of family and community unity

Lost in translation: error analysis of texts translated from Arabic into English by Saudi translators

    No full text
Biographic translation is crucial in today’s globalized world to preserve histories or shed light on the lives of people who influenced their nations or the world. The literature on biographic translation and the factors hindering such translation in an English as a foreign language (EFL) setting, especially in the Saudi context, is relatively limited. In the present study, the author analyzed the errors made by Saudi EFL learners when they translated a biography from Arabic into English. The data were drawn from a short text translated by female final-year university students as part of their course evaluations. The author conducted a qualitative analysis and classified errors according to Pospescu’s taxonomy. The results showed that the students committed all the three error types: linguistic, comprehensive, and translation. Within these three types, the students made diverse errors, ranging from misusing tenses to misspelling words. Consequently, their overall translations were unsatisfactory. This finding is helpful for both learners and educators, as the identified translation errors can be used as teaching aids in translation classes. The findings put emphasis on the importance of practice and prompt feedback as essential aids educators can use to support their students during their translation learning

Automatic ranking of information retrieval systems

    No full text
Typical information retrieval system evaluation requires expensive manually-collected relevance judgments of documents, which are used to rank retrieval systems. Due to the high cost associated with collecting relevance judgments and the ever-growing scale of data to be searched in practice, ranking of retrieval systems using manual judgments is becoming less feasible. Methods to automatically rank systems in absence of judgments have been proposed to tackle this challenge. However, current techniques are still far from reaching the ranking achieved using manual judgments. I propose to advance research on automatic system ranking using supervised and unsupervised techniques. 2018 Copyright held by the owner/author(s).This work was made possible by NPRP grant# NPRP 7-1313-1-245 from the Qatar National Research Fund (a member of Qatar Foundation). Adapting pharmacy education to the needs of society : a research journey to prepare collaborative, practice-ready pharmacists

    No full text
Pharmaceutical care (PC) is a practice philosophy that embraces all the activities that pharmacists perform to optimise patients’ medications use. The author explored PC practice in Kuwait and investigated areas of developments in pharmacy education to support its provision. The thirteen publications presented in this thesis are organised into three themes. The first theme focussed on PC practice whereby the attitudes of pharmacy students and hospital pharmacists towards PC and views on the barriers to its implementation were explored using survey-based studies. The findings indicated that attitudes towards PC were positive but PC practice was limited and challenged by several professional, organisational and technical barriers including lack of teamwork among healthcare professionals. The role of pharmacists in parenteral nutrition therapy was investigated using qualitative interviews to explore the extent of PC practice implementation at hospitals. This further revealed lack of collaborative practice and the limited clinical role of pharmacists in this specialised area. The resulting publications highlighted the needed educational and organisational reforms to support PC practice in Kuwait. Therefore, the second and third themes explored instructional techniques and educational models that are applied in other countries to prepare pharmacy students for PC practice and the feasibility of their implementation in Kuwait. The thesis describes the author’s published descriptive studies and literature reviews on the use of active learning methods and competency-based pharmacy education to equip pharmacy students with the necessary professional competencies. It further describes simulation-based education and interprofessional education (IPE) for integrating collaborative practice to support PC provision. Survey-based research was used to assess the attitudes of health faculty members and students in Kuwait University towards IPE. In general, there were positive attitudes towards these educational innovations and recommendations were provided for their future implementation including the need for administrative support and good investment in training of faculty members. The publications included in this thesis were the first to address the topics in question in Kuwait and the author became recognised as an expert in these fields. Pharmacy education in Kuwait has been evolving by adopting the Doctor of Pharmacy programme and developing IPE curriculum. The thesis provides recommendations for imbedding educational strategies in the pharmacy curriculum to prepare pharmacy graduates to become collaborative, practice-ready PC practitioners capable of providing the PC services that the society needs and deserves

It fulfilled the dream of being virtually present in any part of the world within no time. Over the years internet spanned into every corner of the world and a tremendous growth in the use of internet had been noticed. Internet, with its numerous advantages and support of wide variety of applications has leaded the consumer demand for more bandwidth and high availability to meet his requirements. Addressing these factors great development has taken place in recent years in the field of network technologies. A new era of Gigabit and Terabit Ethernet technologies signify the developments that address the growing demands. With the development in Ethernet technologies the demand for new router architectures that could process the data at gigabit rates also has increased. Many different router architectures have been proposed and implemented to meet these requirements. In this thesis, different router architectures have been studied and explained in detail. Many factors that affect the performance of the router have been reviewed and solutions to overcome the limitations have been addressed in detail. Addressing the solutions for limitations seen in legacy router architectures, the author presents the design, operation of a proposed new routing architecture [16]. The proposed architecture introduces the operation of RDMA into router architecture to minimize the processing and forwarding delay, which improves the performance of routers. The operation of an RDMA enabled router and the operation between two RDMA enabled routers have been clearly explained. The author also presents the mathematical models for evaluating the delay within a router and between two routers, processor utilization and memory utilization for both the legacy and RDMA enabled router architectures. In order to understand the router operation in detail and to enable future researchers to work on router architecture, a simulator with router operation has been built for both the router architectures. The results show that the proposed architectural operation improves the performance of routers even in heavy traffic networks
