The Many Masks of Karol Szymanowski: A discussion of his two piano triptychs
This article explores the relationship between Karol Szymanowski's two piano triptychs – Métopes, op. 29, and Masques, op. 34 – and the literary characters evoked by each of their movements – the Sirens, Calypso and Nausicaa (from Homer's Odyssey), Sheherazade (from The Arabian Nights), Tristan (from Hardt's play Tantris le Bouffon), and Don Juan (not associated to any specific source by the author). The article discusses various strategies used by the composer to convey his subject matter, from obvious visual depictions to hidden structural parallelisms, thus demonstrating how he used both the content and the form of the literary narratives as inspiration.

The Many Masks of Karol Szymanowski: A Commentary on his Piano Triptychs
Note:Karol Szymanowski's music has fascinated me for a long time. The first time I encountered his name was in Artur Rubinstein's autobiography, which recounts how they first met and narrates many anecdotes about their friendship. At the time, I was living in Brazil, and was unable to find any recordings of his music. Nonetheless, Rubinstein's ardent praise of him (“a master!”, “a great Polish composer!”, “a powerful, original personality”) made me very curious, and I did not abandon my desire to keep looking for his music. Then, when I moved to Montreal in order to start my undergraduate degree at McGill University, I was finally able to find many recordings of his works at the school's library.[...
This qualitative research has as main objective to report observations about an on-line piano
extension course offered by the School of Music of the Federal University of Rio Grande do
Norte (EMUFRN). In addition, the specific objective of this work is to reflect on the benefits
that remote teaching can have, bringing a new perspective to those who did not find on-line
instrument teaching feasible or did not see it as an effective teaching and learning possibility.
In this case study, ideas from several authors about the benefits and importance of remote
teaching were used (Luzzi, 2007; Moore & Kearley, 2007; Fernandes, Henn, and Kist, 2019;
Figueiredo, 2020). Through weekly meetings, observations of the participants, open interviews,
feedbacks from students and parents, it was possible to see that distance learning still suffers
from prejudice, but that, with preparation, willingness, and adequate equipment, it is possible
to adapt and not have great losses in learning in relation to teaching done face-toface. It was
possible to verify that the project was very welcome at the time the world was facing, because
it allowed to take children out of idleness and teach them something pleasurable, allowing the
conclusion that, with planning and preparation, it is possible to fill the gaps that can happen in
remote learning (Fernandes, Henn & Kist, 2019) and allow it to have similar quality to face-to face teaching.
Grande do Norte (EMUFRN).
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
This study aims objective to investigate interpretative aspects of Danilo Guanais’s
concert for bassoon and orchestra that are important for the performance of the work.
Through the analysis of the composer’s techniques and procedures as well as the
implicit information found in the musical text, we will seek to provide subsidies to
support interpretative decisions that will be suggested for the bassoon parts. Danilo
Guanais is currently one of the major composers from Rio Grande do Norte, with
compositions such as "Missa" and "Paixão segundo Alcaçus" having reached
prominence in the national and international music scene. His production includes
works for guitar, orchestra, choir, theater and chamber music. In a good part of his
compositions, the composer uses a methodology that combines modern compositional
procedures with rhythmic, melodic and harmonic elements related to armorial music.
Methodologically, this study is divided into two parts: the firs part includes an interview
was made with the composer, a bibliographical survey and the selection and cataloging
of the interpretative aspects to be studied. In the second part, an analysis of the work
was carried out in order to elaborate interpretative suggestions for the bassoon parts.
This investigation involves interpretative aspects to the bassoon so it can aid new
interpretations in the construction of its performances of this work, as well as of other
similar works.
sugeridas a parte do fagote.
segundo Alcaçus” alcançando destaque no cenário musical nacional e internacional.
modernos procedimentos composicionais a elementos rítmicos, melódicos e
obras semelhantes
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
