MABS validation through repeated execution and data mining analysis
Agent Based Modelling is the most interesting and advanced approach for simulating a complex system: in a social context, the single parts and the whole are often very hard to describe in detail. Besides, there are agent based formalisms which allow to study the emergency of social behaviour with the creation and study of models, known as artificial societies. Thanks to the ever increasing computational power, it's been possible to use such models to create software, based on intelligent agents, which aggregate behaviour is complex and difficult to predict, and can be used in open and distributed systems. Data mining is born in the last decades in order to help users in finding useful knowledge from the otherwise overwhelming amount of data available nowadays from the web and the data collected every day by companies. Data Mining techniques can therefore be the keystone to reveal non-trivial knowledge expressed by the initial assumption used to build the micro-level of the model and the structure of the society of agents that emerged from the simulation
Filtering Network Traffic Based on Protocol Encapsulation Rules
Packet filtering is a technology at the foundation of many traffic analysis tasks. While languages and tools for packet filtering have been available for many years, none of them supports filters operating on the encapsulation relationships found in each packet. This represents a problem as the number of possible encapsulations used to transport traffic is steadily increasing and we cannot define exactly which packets have to be captured. This paper presents our early work on an algorithm that models protocol filtering patterns (including encapsulation constraints) as Finite State Automata and supports the composition of multiple expressions within the same filter. The resulting, optimized filter is then translated into executable code. The above filtering algorithms are available in the NetBee open source library, which provides some basic tools for handling network packets (e.g., a tcpdump-like program) and APIs to build more advanced tool
Environmental practice adoption in SMEs: The effects of firm proactive orientation and regulatory pressure
Even with proven benefits of engaging in sustainability, and stakeholder and regulatory pressure to do so, small- and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) seldom adopt environmental practices beyond those required. To investigate why some SMEs adopt environmental practices while others do not, we studied the proactive orientation-environmental practices link and the moderation of regulatory pressure on this relationship. Based on a survey of 286 SMEs in the wine industry in Italy, France, Denmark, and the United States, we tested our model using regression analysis. We found support for our hypotheses on the positive proactive orientation-environmental practices link and the enhancing role of regulatory pressure. We conducted further supplementary exploratory analyses to examine these relationships among different types of environmental practices. The findings from our study offer new research directions regarding the nuanced roles of proactive orientation and regulatory pressure in motivating SMEs to adopt more environmental practices
Donkeys and Hares. The Enemy Warrior in the Early European Chronicles of the Conques
The Author scrutinizes the image of the enemy warrior in the early European chronicles of the Spanish conquest, within a historical-comparative approach. In the 16th century sources the image of the Indios fighting Europeans offers a very specific vision of this enemy. It was an image that had its roots in stereotypes of the past. But it had been reshaped into a new and original version. Solidarity between the devil and the Indios did not produce fearsome warriors. It was an image that did not have to hinder the expansion of European traffic
The contribution tends to examine a Digest text extracted from the seventh book of Ulpian’s Disputationes (D. 41, 2, 34, 2) related to the acquisition of possession domino ignoranti by his own servus and by the servus alienus in any case possessed by himself or possessed by no one. Although suspected of being a lot interpolated in form and substance, the author claims its substancial authenticity, also com- paring it with the previous § 1 of the same text
MIMO Systems for Diversity and Interference Mitigation
"This third edition reflects the latest advances in mobile communications. In particular, the text expands coverage of wireless local area networks, low-speed wireless data, and wireless ATM. The book also addresses new standards for wireless LANs and high-speed broadband, as well as for wireless mesh networks, mobile ad hoc networks, and tandem connections of digital cellular, IEEE 802.11, and IEEE 8902.16 networks. The author also covers the development of very-short-distance wireless connectivity technologies, such as Bluetooth and ultrawideband technologies, along with the rise of third- and fourth-generation digital cellular systems and wireless multimedia communications"-
Towards a Postcolonial Ethics: Rewriting Ukraine in the "Enemy's Language"
In this chapter the author explores post-Maidan cultural developments in Ukraine, focusing on the current reshaping of the contested language issue in the intellectual debate through the lens of the postcolonial paradigm. The author examines the outcomes of the Maidan revolution and the war in Donbas as an influence on the concept of the Ukrainian cultural and social space by analyzing the main narratives of the so-called “Ukraine crisis” played and enacted by Russian-speaking cultural actors, in light of the emerging “postcolonial ethics” stemming from their role in public debates
