Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
A unique congenital Mullerian anomaly: Robert’s uterus
Institute of Mother and Child, Department of Gynecological Surgery, Kishinev, MoldovaIntroducere: Uterul Robert, sau uter septat asimetric este o anomalie foarte şi foarte rară.
S-a efectuat excizia totală a septului, fără complicaţii.
Cazul #2.
It presents with two cavities, one of which is blind. Up to date, only twenty such cases have been reported in the literature. We present herein a representative two cases of this atypical Müllerian malformation and discuss its management.
Materials & Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of 311 consecutive cases with female genital anomalies (Müllerian anomalies) and all pts with Robert’s uterus were selected from the database.
Results: Two (0.6%) pts with the asymmetric septate uterus (Robert’s uterus) were detected.
Case #1. A 26-year-old female (G1, P1), presented at 40/41 weeks of gestation with premature rupture of membranes. Vaginal examination reveals the complete longitudinal vaginal septa and breech presentation. Urgent cesarean section was performed and delivered a healthy baby girl (birth weight 2,880 g, Apgar score 7/8 at 1 and
5 min). During revision, the asymmetric uterine septa with the formation of the blind cavity were detected. Complete excision of the uterine septum was performed without complication.
Case #2. A 14-year-old girl presented with severe cyclical lower abdominal pain during menstruation, for 6 months. Her menstrual cycles were regular, moderate, beginning from 13 years. The uterus anomaly was diagnosed on combined ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which showed an asymmetric septate uterus with one blind cavity, causing menstrual retention. The patient underwent laparotomy with the evacuation of haematometra and complete excision of the uterine septum. The postoperative course was uneventful, and
the patient remained asymptomatic for 5 years.
Conclusion: Gynecologists and pediatric surgeons should be aware of this atypical obstructive Müllerian malformation and its management in order to avoid inappropriate management of these patients. To the best of our knowledge, Robert’s uterus with complete longitudinal vaginal septa is the first report in the literature of Müllerian anomalies “without a classification”
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Assessment of the role of hematological inflammatory markers in the severity of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
Introduction. Hematological inflammatory markers
may be promising diagnostic markers for assessing the severity of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy. The aim of
the study was to evaluate and compare the levels of hematological inflammatory markers in intrahepatic cholestasis
of pregnancy.
Material and methods. A prospective cohort study of
142 clinical cases, divided into two groups depending on
the presence of cholestasis gravidarum, was carried out.
The research was conducted by assessing the level of bile
acids and hematological inflammatory markers in the mother’s blood, as well as by studying medical records. The IBM
Statistics SPSS 21 program was used to process the statistical data. To compare categorical variables, the χ² without
the Yates’ continuity correction test was applied.
Results. There was an increase in platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in pregnant women with intrahepatic cholestasis
of pregnancy compared to the control group (146.0±6.8
versus 135.2±7.3, respectively). The values of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio and the average volume of platelets were similar in both groups. At the same time, the study
found a decrease in the values of erythrocyte distribution
among women whose pregnancy was complicated by
cholestasis gravidarum.
Conclusions. The study showed a significant increase
in platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio in women whose pregnancy
was complicated by cholestasis gravidarum, as well as an
increase in this indicator with increasing levels of bile acids. Thus, this ratio may be a promising diagnostic marker
in assessing the severity of intrahepatic cholestasis of pregnancy
Active tuberculosis of the respiratory organs as a risc factor in pregnancy
Introduction/Background. The problem of tuberculosis in pregnant women deserves special
attention during increasing incidence of this disease in Moldova. Risk of maternal and perinatal
pathology significantly increased in women with active tuberculosis of the respiratory organs. In
this study we analyzed features of the course of pregnancy in 84 patients with active tuberculosis.
Direct proportionality was found between the active form of lung specific process and frequency
of obstetric complications. Patients, Methods. To achieve this study observational retrospective
analysis of obstetrical records of pregnant women with active tuberculosis of the respiratory
organs was conducted of PHCF ICSOSMC and SCM N1 (Moldova) during the years 2005-2010.
Results. The most common clinical form of tuberculosis of the respiratory organs, found in
patients in the study group was found to be infiltrative pulmonary tuberculosis - 52 (61.9%) cases.
Second after impact was exudative pleurisy - 16 (19.0%) cases. Disseminated (miliary) form was
detected in 6 (7.1%) patients, fibro-cavitary form - 5 (6.0%) patients, nodular form - 5 (6.0%)
patients. A woman was diagnosed with generalized tuberculosis affecting the lungs (miliary
tuberculosis), pleura (pleural exudative - fibrinous), liver, kidney, intrathoracic lymph nodes. The
case resulted in maternal death and intranatal mortality. At 3/4 of patients pregnancy developed
on the background of iron deficiency anemia - 69 (82.1%) cases. During pregnancy they were treated anemic. Other complications of pregnancy in patients with active tuberculosis of the
respiratory organs were imminent abortion in different terms - 38 (45.2%) cases; placental
pathology was found in 22 (26.2%) cases, pregnant swelling - in 4 (4.8%) cases; pregnancy was
complicated by gestosis and preeclampsia - in 5 (6.0%) cases. Analyzing the peculiarities of
placental pathology there was identified intrauterine fetal chronic hypoxia in 9 (10.7%) cases,
placental chronic insufficiency - in 6 (7.1%) cases, fetal growth symmetric form retardation - in 15
(17.9%) cases and asymmetric form - in 3 (3.6%) cases; amniotic fluid pathology was noted in 7
(8.3%) cases. Only 6 (7.1%) pregnancies were uncomplicated. Conclusion. The obtained data are
confronted with data from the literature. The increased incidence of pregnancy complications in
women with active tuberculosis of the respiratory organs was found. According to foreign studies
the complicated evolution of pregnancy occurs in 40.0 to 43.1% of cases, and according to data
from this study - up to 70% of cases. Frequently the pregnancy was complicated by iron deficiency
anemia (about 80%), much higher than the population average (15-20%). The obstetric
complications were significant: gestosis and preeclampsia - 5 (6.0%) cases, placental pathology 22
(26.2%) cases, being accompanied 18 (21.4%) cases of fetal growth retardation. These obstetric
complications observed in this study coincided with their incidence in the literature
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
