Simulation of batch physical refining and deodorization processes
This work presents an application of a differential distillation model for the simulation of batch physical refining and/or deodorization processes in the vegetable oil industry. The vapor-liquid equilibria of these fat systems are described by group contribution equations for vapor pressures and activity coefficients published elsewhere (Ceriani, R., and A.J.A. Meirelles, Predicting Vapor-Liquid Equilibria of Fatty Systems, Fluid Phase Equilib. 215:227-236, 2004; Fredenslund, A., J. Gmehling, and P. Rasmussen, Vapor-Liquid Equilibria Using UNIFAC, Elsevier Scientific, Amsterdam, 1977). The full complexity of the oil, expressed as its total composition of TAG, DAG, MAG, and FFA, is considered within the simulation. This approach permitted us to quantify and qualify distillative neutral oil losses during physical refining. Three different models of differential distillation were tested to develop a good representation of the batch process to be applied to the physical refining and/or deodorization of complex mixtures such as vegetable oils. To evaluate the recommended approach, a case study was performed, namely, a batch deodorizer was simulated for coconut oil refining, and the results were compared with those reported in the literature.81330531
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Seed germination in a narrow endemic species (Telekia speciosissima, Asteraceae): implications for ex-situ conservation.
Telekia speciosissima is an endemic chasmophyte of limestone and dolomite boulders in the Lombardy Prealps. It is included
in the Italian Red List as a low-risk species. Seed germination dynamics of this plant were studied with the aim of producing
germination protocols to use in ex situ conservation and recovery projects. Cold stratification and light requirements were
investigated as potential factors improving seed germination. Seed samples were therefore stratified at 6 – 108C during 15,
30, 45, 60, 90 and 180 days and then tested at higher temperature in continuous darkness or in a light/dark regime.
Germination tests showed that seed dormancy was broken by cold stratification, while light promoted germination itself.
These two factors strongly influenced germination dynamics and parameters. The highest germination percentage (91.8%)
was attained after 90 days of cold stratification before testing seeds in light condition. However, a decrease in germination
percentages occurred after a stratification of 150 days. An interpretation of these results is given according to the biological
and ecological characters of the species, especially with respect to the need for establishing a transient seed bank
Biogeographical, Synecological And Syntaxonomical Outlines Of Lombardy And Piedmont Lowland Heathlands (NW Italy).
Calluna vulgaris communities of Lombardy and Piedmont upper Po Plain, developing on different Quaternary deposits, can be considered one of the most southern example of lowland heathlands in Europe. First outcomes of the vegetation surveys carried out with phytosociological methods, are reported. Vegetation types have been characterised and their relationships with different deposits have been sought. On older deposits major community types belong to Genistion Boch. 1943, while Sarothamnion Tx. in Prsg. 1949 thickets are quite rare. Comparisons with literature emphasized such floristic differences that could lead to their arrangement in a proper sintaxon. Field observations about dominant species behaviour allowed some insight about competitive strategies and autosuccessional patterns, which suggest the partial revision of their ecological meaning
Il Centro Regionale per la Flora Autoctona della Lombardia.
Lombardy is characterised by a remarkable variety of plant communities and landscapes that often show a high species richness with the presence of several endemic and rare species. However the region is one of the first areas for density of population, development rate and productive activities in Italy and Europe as well: very particular ecosystems (limestone prairies, lowland heathlands, peat bogs, etc.) often intermingle with towns, factories, quarries and so on. Beyond the traditional enterprises for the conservation of biological diversity based on the creation of protected areas, the regional administration has recently founded the “Centro per la Flora Autoctona” (Wild Plants Centre), whose main aim is the acquisition of knowledge and techniques to warrant the availability of wild shrubs and herbs suited to 1) environmental restoration, and 2) rare and/or endangered species conservation project
La riqualificazione floristica del Bosco delle Querce di Seveso e Meda a trent’anni dall’incidente dell’ICMESA.
The environmental recovery of the Bosco delle Querce (Oak Wood) of Seveso and Meda thirty years after the Icmesa accident. Following the Icmesa industrial accident of 10 July 1976, environmental recovery within the Bosco delle Querce (Oak Wood) of Seveso and Meda has helped create forest communities that are complete in terms of woody species. These reconstructed vegetation types were, however, lacking in an herbaceous understorey component, the natural dispersal of which is hindered by urbanisation and the geographic isolation of the site. In this context the Native Flora Centre of Lombardy conducted an assisted migration to establish various sites of recolonisation, composed of eight herbaceous species typical of the understorey fl ora (Anemone nemorosa, Brachypodium sylvaticum, Campanula trachelium, Festuca heterophylla, Fragaria vesca, Luzula pilosa, Teucrium scorodonia, and Vinca minor). In the present study we report a synthesis of the results obtained during the course of monitoring of these species conducted in the two seasons following the establishment of the plants; results that demonstrate the success of the intervention
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
