Wartość czasu jakościowego w antropologii kulturowej

    No full text
The goal of this article is to illustrate different ways of understanding quality of time by social sciences and humanities. The article starts with a brief description of Durkheim’s concept of social time and Bergson’s lived time – which he called ‘real duration’. Then the attention is turned to historical and cultural anthropology and scholars within those fields – Edmund Leach, Edward Hall, Aron Guriewicz, Jacques Le Goff, Clifford Geertz – to name a few, who emphasized quality changes in how value of time has been understood over ages. Finally, modern concepts of point time are presented, which suggest changes quality of time occurring in Western societies during XXI

Jak stworzyliśmy zagładę? Inscenizacja postapokaliptycznego świata w LARP-ie

The author analyzes a post-apocalyptic convention called OldTown, during which LARP takes place. He does so in the context of Victor Turner's theory on the communitas/societas opposition and liminoidity in contemporary culture. The main purpose of the article is to indicate that OldTown has a rite de passage structure, thanks to which individuals participating in the rally exist outside the social structure. In fact, they create a community of communitas detached from commonly recognized norms and principles. In order to support particular claims, the author cites quotations originating from the statements of OldTown participants, which are the result of ethnographic field research conducted in August 2010

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Antropolog na obcym terenie? Nowe perspektywy – nowe możliwości

The anthropology of culture is currently facing the challenges of the constantly changing reality, the world of "flickering meanings", which somehow forces researchers to adopt new attitudes and concepts, and sometimes modify the research field traditionally assigned to a given field. It has developed over many years as the science of "Others". It was most often practiced in small, exotic or possibly rural communities, and its aim was to view a foreign reality, while exerting any influence on the surveyed community was perceived as an undesirable effect or as a methodological error. Of course, there were initiatives that went beyond the presented paradigm - Sola Taxa and his "Lisa Project" can be given as an example, which, despite the fact that it became an inspiration for many anthropologists, was at the same time subjected to severe criticism, not only from the scientific community

Critical data studies meets discard studies: Waste data reflectivity in digital urban waste tracking system

    No full text
This article examines the implementation and impact of the Digital Urban Waste Tracking System (DUWTS) in Poland, a smart waste management technology designed to enhance waste segregation practices in urban environments. DUWTS combines public administration and private sector efforts to oversee proper waste disposal through advanced dataveillance technologies. The system utilizes electronic ground containers equipped with sensors and QR codes to weigh and record waste, aiming to improve recycling levels and manage waste data. The purpose of the research is to critically explore the concept of "waste data reflectivity," highlighting the socio-technological implications of data representation in waste management. The major findings reveal significant distortions and errors in data reflection, impacting various stakeholders, including municipalities, waste disposal companies, and residents. The study concludes that while DUWTS represents a technological advancement, it also perpetuates existing challenges in waste management by obscuring true complexities and responsibilities. Integrating critical discard studies and critical data studies, the article provides a nuanced understanding of the data-driven waste management systems' complexities and challenges

Gra komputerowa BioShock jako przykład chylącej się ku upadkowi utopii

The author's intention is to consider the meanings contained in the computer game Bioshock (2K Boston 2007) from the perspective of the works of the American writer and philosopher Ayn Rand. In order to track down the interdependence of individual works, the main elements of the game world will be compared with the symmetrical threads appearing in the writer's oeuvre. Particularly important for these considerations are the moments when intertextual references between the works take place. The conclusions drawn on the basis of the presented examples will draw the line between the utopia created by the writer and the dystopia presented in BioShock, and will also show the process of blurring this line

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
