    Vehicular ad hoc networks have frequently been used to offer solutions for data exchange in intelligent transport systems. Due to the characteristics of high mobility, frequent topology changes and rapid variations of scalability, one of the main challenges of VANETs is the design of robust schemes for message forwarding. In this sense, strategies based on geographic position have been often adopted by routing protocols. Moreover, the incorporation of in-vehicle navigation systems enabled an improvement in routing based on geographic information because the trajectories of vehicles shall be used for the routing process. However, there are several protocols that exploit the use of trajectories of vehicles, a few of them focus on the historical trajectories to aid in message routing process in the network. In this dissertation, routing schemes for vehicular networks, exploiting the use of information spatiotemporal trajectories of vehicles are presented. First, the focus is on the analysis of data collected from vehicles during their routine trajectories and the discovery of patterns of those trajectories, which denote routes that are often followed by users between a source and a destination. These patterns of trajectories are used to assist in the routing of messages in a VANET. The main contribution of this work is related to the increased rate of packet delivery among users belonging to sparse VANETs, which are seen as scenarios that make it difficult to build end-to-end routes. Besides the improvement of the delivery rate, simulation results show the efficiency of the proposed solution in detecting the best routes for routing messages, as well as a new approach to opportunistic routing based on the historical movement of vehicles.Redes veiculares ad hoc (VANETs - Vehicular Ad Hoc NETworks) têm sido frequentemente utilizadas para oferecer soluções de troca de dados em sistemas de transportes inteligentes. Devido às características de alta mobilidade dos nós, frequentes mudanças de topologia e rápidas variações de escalabilidade, um dos principais desafios das VANETs é a concepção de esquemas robustos de encaminhamento de mensagens. Nesse sentido, estratégias baseadas em posição geográfica têm sido frequentemente adotadas em protocolos de roteamento. Além disso, a incorporação de sistema de navegação (GPS - Global Positioning Systems) nos veículos possibilita um avanço no roteamento baseado em informação geográfica, pois as trajetórias dos veículos passam a ser utilizadas no processo de encaminhamento. No entanto, apesar de existirem vários protocolos que exploram o uso de trajetórias de veículos, poucos focam no histórico de trajetórias para auxiliar no processo de encaminhamento de mensagens na rede. Nesta dissertação, são apresentados esquemas de roteamento para redes veiculares, que exploram o uso de informações espaço-temporais de trajetórias de veículos. Primeiramente, o foco é a análise dos dados de trajetórias coletados pelas rotinas dos veículos e a descoberta de padrões de trajetórias, os quais denotam rotas que são frequentemente seguidas pelos usuários entre uma origem e um destino. Em seguida, esses padrões de trajetórias são aplicados como recursos para auxiliar no processo de roteamento de mensagens em uma VANET. A principal contribuição da proposta está relacionada ao aumento da taxa de entrega de pacotes entre usuários pertencentes às VANETs esparsas, as quais são vistas como cenários que trazem dificuldades para construir rotas fim-a-fim. Além da melhoria da taxa de entrega, os resultados mostram a eficiência da solução proposta na detecção de melhores rotas para o encaminhamento de mensagens, assim como uma nova abordagem de roteamento oportunístico baseado no histórico de deslocamento dos veículos

    Diurnal surface flux variability over western boundary currents

Geophysical Research Letters, 46(15), (2019): 9174-9182, doi:10.1029/2019GL082826.An analysis of a satellite ocean surface turbulent flux product demonstrated that, as expected, the western boundary current regions dominate the seasonal cycle amplitude. Surprisingly, our analysis of the global ocean diurnal flux variability also demonstrated a regional maximum in the winter over the western boundary current regions. We conducted comparisons with in situ data from several buoys located in these regions. The buoy data were in general agreement with the relative magnitude, timing, and importance of each of the bulk parameters driving the latent and sensible heat fluxes. Further analysis demonstrated that the strength and timing of the diurnal signal is related to the location of the buoy relative to the region of maximum heat flux and sea surface temperature gradient. In both regions, the timing of the higher winds coincides with the moistest surface layer, indicating that surface fluxes rather than entrainment mixing play a key role in this phenomenon.CAC gratefully acknowledges funding from the NASA MAP and NEWS programs (NNX13AN48G and NNX15AI47A).     Distributed Cognition and Embodiment in Text Planning: A Situated Study of Collaborative Writing in the Workplace

    Through a study of collaborative writing at a student advocacy nonprofit, this article explores how writers distribute their text planning across tools, artifacts, and gestures, with a particular focus on how embodied representations of texts are present in text planning. Findings indicate that these and other representations generated by the writers move through a spectrum of durability, from provisional to more persistent representations. The author argues that these findings offer useful insights into the relationships among distributed cognition, materiality, embodiment, and text planning and have implications for practitioners and students of writing. Additionally, the author recommends that scholars further investigate the ways in which embodied representations of texts are generated through lived experiences with the materials of writing. </jats:p

Oceanography, 32(2), (2019):86-97, doi: 10.5670/oceanog.2019.216.The salinity variability of the upper ocean is influenced by surface heat, momentum, and freshwater fluxes, which are in turn affected by atmospheric conditions. It is necessary to accurately measure these surface fluxes within their atmospheric environment to understand the linkages between rain events and the resulting upper-ocean salinity balance that occurs at cloud scales. We describe a comprehensive set of atmospheric and oceanic data collected during the second Salinity Processes in the Upper-ocean Regional Study (SPURS-2) experiment in the tropical eastern Pacific Ocean. These measurements included direct estimates of heat, moisture, and momentum fluxes using direct covariance flux systems on R/V Roger Revelle and a 3 m discus buoy. These are the first successful direct measurements of evaporation from a buoy over an extended period. The atmospheric moisture budget is estimated from a combination of data, including measured freshwater fluxes, upper air sounding data, and satellite data. This analysis reconfirms the important role of moisture convergence beneath the Intertropical Convergence Zone in this region. We perform an analysis of the near-surface vertical salinity structure and its relationship to these surface fluxes, highlighting the roles of stabilization by solar insolation and precipitation and the effects of rainfall on mixing of the upper ocean.This research was supported by NASA under grants NNX15AF70G and NNX15AG20G

    IOP 2021 Symposium: Increasing the Rigor, Reproducibility, and Impact of Psychophysiological Research: Power, Pipelines, Reliability, and Open Access Advantages

    Symposium as part of the 20th World Congress of Psychophysiology organized by the International Organization of Psychophysiology (IOP). Poor statistical power, heterogeneity in data processing pipelines, low or unknown psychometric reliability, and non-transparent methodological and publishing practices have contributed to failures to replicate prominent effects. The purpose of this symposium is to present data and outcomes characterizing the presence and magnitude of barriers to replicable psychophysiological research and potential solutions and benefits. Carbine presents data on statistical power and sample sizes in human electrophysiology research and highlights how sample size calculations increase research impact and reproducibility. Rocha addresses the variability in methodological pipelines for event-related potential (ERP) research using a data-processing multiverse and the error-related negativity (ERN) that resulted in over 3,400 ERN scores per person to show how data processing decisions can maximize both data quality and the magnitude of experimental effects. Findings have implications for standardizing data processing pipelines and ERP reliability. Clayson presents on the impact and importance of psychometric reliability and accurate measurement in improving data quality using the open-source ERP Reliability Analysis (ERA) Toolbox. ERP measurements with strong psychometric properties improve replicability and increase the likelihood of robust and meaningful relationships with individual difference variables. Larson presents on the impact of open access publishing on research attention and how transparent publication practices result in an “open access advantage”. The open access advantage includes higher citation rates and increased Altmetric mentions, regardless of open access publication type (publisher-paid or author-archived). We elucidate both challenges and beneficial outcomes in increasing the reproducibility, reliability, and robustness of psychophysiological findings
