Encounter with religion in the game world : A representation analysis of Shinto and Buddhism in Ghost of Tsushima
In this essay, the author examines religion and how it is represented in the video game Ghost of Tsushima. With the representation term and its meaning from Stuart Hall, the author aims to analyse religious aspects in the game’s environment and story, thus in the end picking out the representation that the games create of religion. Using qualitative content analysis and semiotics, the author picks out temples, monks, amulets, and Kami as the main religious aspects that are found in-game. As it turns out the religious aspects in-game create the impression of Buddhist overturn in the Shinto religion. Many aspects stem from Buddhism, which correlate to the period and how Shinto assimilated Buddhist practises over time. The monks and temples are all of Buddhist origin, except for the official shrines to the Kami in-game. Overall, the Kami and Shinto, in general, are not present beyond being used for mechanics in the game while Buddhism is represented with more important aspects with major characters and meanings shown or talked about. The author does note that both religious traditions are presented more as merged, having become indistinguishable during the period in accordance with historical research. The essay concludes thus that religion is mostly represented in the characters like the warrior monk Norio and the monk Junshin who are followed more closely and represent religion through their actions and words
The Image of the American woman : A study of Swedish travel books from 1850s about America and how authors described the women of the nation
The following essay works to achieve a deeper understanding of how Swedish bourgeois women saw on the status of women in America (USA). Therefore, in the process creating more knowledge about Swedish 19th century thought pattern about America with focus on women. This was done by analysing the travel accounts of two authors’, Fredrika Bremer and Lovisa Mathilda Nettelbladt, travels though America. The main questions addressed in the essay were how the two authors Bremer and Nettelbladt described the American women’s situation, attributes and lastly to understand their stance toward the women they meet. This was achieved with the help of a method from Eva Block and Kenneth Nyberg called “image-concept” (“bild-begreppet”) in which an image is produced according to several factors; facts, opinion of X and proposal of action. The theories that were used for analysing the descriptions and overall results was a synthesis of Nyberg’s thesis- and Björn Moen’s essay results that the Swedish people were more accommodating towards foreign cultures then other Europeans. And lastly, Joan Scott’s theory about gender was used in the study. The results showed that Bremer and Nettelbladt had a very opened mind towards the women of America. Almost everything about women’s situation in America were positive; their attitude towards women, while affected by small personal inconveniences, was also positive to a large degree. Lastly the attributes of the women of America were of both inner and outer qualities, with attractive, gracious/cheerful, diligent and independent being most significant. Analysing the results, women of America were overwhelmingly described with positivity. The negative traits and opinions about the women were not significant, the only common opinion being that Americans in general could show too much hospitality. This showed that Bremer and Nettelbladt were following the pattern of Nyberg’s and Moen’s results, showing that Swedish people might have been more accommodating towards foreign cultures. Scott’s theory helped show that women of America had a more powerful position than in Europe, due to authors admiration about what women did and how respected they were, and secondly how women were breaking the power relationship between women and men. A short didactic reflection about how this work could move towards a deeper understanding about the social status of women for the pupils in history. Lastly the author of this work propose that more essays of history like this should be done to create a more complete image of the Swedish 19th century thought patterns about America; and of other cultures to expand the knowledge about the past individuals that we have been taught by
To Travel with Feeling : A history of emotions study of four travelling women during the 1800s
This essay aims to explore the emotional dimension of travelling through the eyes of four women across the world during the middle of the 1800s. The chosen Swedish women were collectively of middle- and upper-class status. The questions asked were the following: What emotional charge do the travelogues have regarding locations/culture/people? With the use of William Reddy’s Emotive and Barbra Rosenwein’s Emotional communities as a theoretical framework, the results showed that locations related to nature were extremely positive. Urban locations, on the other hand, were not as positive to see in Europe. This related to the ongoing industrialization of Europe, creating densely populated and unclean environments that became was seen with strong displeasure and charged with negative emotions. Culture was a category of emotional conflict for all four travellers. It showed that the Swedish and protestant background was strong in determining values and norms for these women and made it possible for strong, negative emotional experiences. Combined there was an ongoing evolution of thoughts with nationalistic and Eurocentric elements. People had positive attributes and emotions connected to them on an individual basis and were separated from their culture. Instead, negative emotions were connected to groups of people that conflicted with these women’s ideas and interests. Overall, the emotional dimension was a mix of strong positives and some strong negatives. A determining factor was the background, and an overall complexity to the emotional dimension was conclusive
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
