The Morphological And Molecular Characterization Of Henneguya Rotunda N. Sp., A Parasite Of The Gill Arch And Fins Of Salminus Brasiliensis From The Mogi Guaçu River, Brazil
A new species of myxosporea (Henneguya rotunda n. sp.) was found in the membrane of the gill arch and the fins of Salminus brasiliensis in the Mogi Guaçu River, municipality of Pirassununga, São Paulo state, Brazil. Morphological and morphometric analyses using light microscopy revealed parasites with similar characteristics at both infection sites. The mature spores found infecting the fins had oval spore body with 7.1±0.2 μm in length, 5.6±0.2 μm in width, 3.7±0.1 μm in thickness, 16.4±1.2 μm in length of the caudal process, and 23.6±1.1 μm in total length of the spore. In a frontal view, the polar capsule was observed to be symmetrical with 3.4±0.2 μm in length and 1.8±0.1 μm in width. Mature spores contain six to seven turns of the polar filaments. The morphometric data concerning the spores obtained from plasmodia from the membrane of the gill arch were similar to those from the fins. Ultrastructure analysis revealed that the plasmodial wall was formed by a single membrane and had numerous pinocytotic canals connecting the outside of the plasmodia to the ectoplasm zone. Beyond that, various electron-translucent vesicles also were observed at the periphery of the plasmodium. The molecular analyses of the 18S rDNA gene from the spores obtained from the gill arch membrane and fin membrane showed that these sequences shared 100 % similarity. Phylogenetic studies using maximum parsimony and maximum likelihood methods demonstrated the polyphyletic clustering of the myxosporean parasites of characiform fishes. H. rotunda n. sp. clustered as a sister species of Myxobolus pantanalis, also a parasite of S. brasiliensis. © 2014 Springer-Verlag.113517031711Abdel-Baki, A.S., Sakran, T., Fayed, H., Zayed, E., Ultrastructural characteristics and histological impacts of Myxobolus naffari (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) infecting Nile labeo Labeo niloticus (Osteichthyes: Cichlidae) (2010) Dis Aquat Org, 90, pp. 207-213Abdel-Ghaffar, F., Abdel-Baki, A.A., Bayoumy, E.M., Bashtar, A.R., Al Qurieshy, S., Morsey, K.S., Alghamdy, A., Mehlhorn, H., Light and electron microscopic study on Henneguya suprabranchiae Landsberg, 1987 (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) infecting Oreochromis niloticus, a new host record (2008) Parasitol Res, 103 (3), pp. 609-617Adriano, E.A., Arana, S., Cordeiro, N.S., An ultrastructural and histopathological study of Henneguya pellucida n. sp. Morphology And 18s Rdna Sequencing Identifies Henneguya Visibilis N Sp., A Parasite Of Leporinus Obtusidens From Mogi Guaçu River, Brazil
During a survey of myxozoan parasites of freshwater fish from the Mogi Guaçu River in São Paulo State, Brazil, plasmodia of Henneguya visibilis n sp. were found on the fins of Leporinus obtusidens (Characiformes: Anostomidae). The plasmodia, which were observed on five out of eight (62.5 %) L. obtusidens examined, were 400-1,000 μm long. Mature spores were elongated with a spore body 10.8 ± 0.6 μm long and 3.9 ± 0.2 μm wide, a caudal process 18 ± 1.2 μm long, and a total spore length of 26.8 ± 1.1 μm. Polar capsules were elongated 4.9 ± 0.3 μm long and 1.4 ± 0.1 μm wide. Histological examination indicated that the plasmodia developed in the connective tissue, and no inflammatory infiltrate was observed at the infection site. Ultrastructural analysis showed a plasmodium wall with a single membrane and several pinocytotic canals. Sporogenesis occurred from the periphery to the center of the plasmodia. Phylogenetic analysis of the 18S rDNA sequence using maximum likelihood and maximum parsimony methods showed H. visibilis n sp. positioned in a sub-clade composed of Henneguya/Myxobolus parasites of several freshwater fish families. © 2013 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.11318190Abdel-Ghaffar, F., Abdel-Baki, A.A., Bayoumy, E.M., Bashtar, A.R., Al Qurieshy, S., Morsey, K.S., Alghamdy, A., Mehlhorn, H., Light and electron microscopic study on Henneguya suprabranchiae Landsberg, 1987 (Myxozoa: Myxosporea) infecting Oreochromis niloticus, a new host record (2008) Parasitol Res, 103 (3), pp. 609-617. , 18516619 10.1007/s00436-008-1019-zAdriano, E.A., Arana, S., Cordeiro, N.S., Histology, ultrastructure and prevalence of Henneguya piaractus (Myxosporea) infecting the gills of Piaractus mesopotamicus (Characidae) cultivated in Brazil (2005) Dis Aquat Org, 64 (3), pp. 229-235. , 1:STN:280:DC%2BD2Mzks1SmsQ%3D%3D 15997821 10.3354/dao064229Adriano, E.A., Arana, S., Cordeiro, N.S., An ultrastructural and histopathological study of Henneguya pellucida n sp. Wanderers' Attitude to Soviet Power: Old Believer P.S. Morozov's Unknown Work
The author studies the previously unknown historic work of P.S. Morozov, a strannik (wanderer) Old Believer, written in 1920 for M.I. Kalinin, the All-Russian Central Executive Committee (VTsIK) Chairman, and intended to defend the Old Believers in the town of Danilov, Yaroslavl Province, from being pursued by Cheka officers. The author's main attention is focused on Old Believers' understanding of the attitude problem to Soviet power
A low carrying angle is measured in elite tennis players just before ball impact during the forehand, suggesting a dynamic varus instant accommodation moving towards full extension
Purpose: The goal of this study was to use image analysis recordings to measure the carrying angle of elite male tennis players during the forehand stroke, with the hypothesis that elite tennis players overstress their elbow in valgus over the physiological degree in the frontal plane just before ball contact on forehand groundstrokes. Methods: The carrying angle of male tennis players ranked in the top 25 positions in the ATP ranking was measured on selected video frames with the elbow as close as possible to full extension just before the ball-racket contact in forehands. These frames were extracted from 306 videos professionally recorded for training purposes by a high-profile video analyst. All measures were conducted by three independent observers. Results: Sixteen frames were finally included. The mean carrying angle was 11.5° ± 4.7°. The intraclass correlation coefficient value was 0.703, showing good reliability of the measurement technique. The measured carrying angle was lower than what has been observed in historical cohorts using comparable measurement methodology, suggesting a possible instant varus accommodation mechanism before hitting the ball. Conclusions: The observed decrease in the carrying angle is a consequence of an increase in elbow flexion position dictated by the transition from a closed to open, semi-open stances. As the elbow flexes during the preparation phase, it is less constrained by the olecranon and its fossa, increasing the strain on the medial collateral ligament and capsule structures. Moving towards full extension before the ball-racket contact, the elbow is dynamically stabilised by a contraction of the flexor muscles. These observations could provide a new explanation for medial elbow injuries among elite tennis players and drive specific rehabilitation protocols. Study Design: Descriptive epidemiology study. Level of Evidence: Level IV
Light, Electron Microscopy And Histopathology Of Myxobolus Salminus N. Sp., A Parasite Of Salminus Brasiliensis From The Brazilian Pantanal
In this report, we describe the morphology and histopathology of Myxobolus salminus n. sp., a parasite of the gill filaments of wild Salminus brasiliensis (dourado) from the Brazilian Pantanal. The small polysporic plasmodia were ∼100 μm in diameter and the development was asynchronous. The mature spores were oval to pear shaped and had a smooth wall. The spore measurements were (mean ± S.D., with range in parentheses): length 10.1 ± 0.4 μm (9.6-10.5), width 6.1 ± 0.4 μm (5.8-6.6) and thickness 5.0 ± 0.6 μm (4.7-5.3). The polar capsules were elongated and of equal size: length 4.6 ± 0.2 μm (4.3-4.8) and width 1.7 ± 0.1 μm (1.5-1.9). The histological analysis revealed numerous plasmodia in the blood vessels of the gill filaments. The site of parasite development was the wall of the large-caliber blood vessel of the gill filament, with progressive growth towards the lumen, resulting in the obstruction of blood flow, congestion and perivascular edema. The ultrastructural study revealed that the plasmodial wall was composed of two membranes, had numerous pinocytic canals and was in direct contact with the basement membrane of the vessel. The development of the parasite was asynchronous, with mature spores, immature spores and young developmental stages randomly distributed throughout the plasmodium. The prevalence of the parasite was 4.4%, with male and female fish being infected. © 2009 Elsevier B.V.
