Heteroclinic optimal control solutions for attitude motion planning

    No full text
An analytical attitude motion planning method is presented that exploits the heteroclinic connections of an optimal kinematic control problem. This class of motion, of hyperbolic type, supply a special case of analytically defined rotations that can be further optimised to select a suitable reference motion that minimises accumulated torque and the final orientation error amongst these motions. This analytical approach could be used to improve the overall performance of a spacecraft’s attitude dynamics and control system when used alongside current flight tested tracking controllers. The resulting algorithm only involves optimising a small number of parameters of standard functions and is simple to implement

Design of an attitude stabilization electromagnetic module for detumbling uncooperative targets

    No full text
One of the challenges of Active Debris Removal is related to the tumbling of the target satellite, when the chaser spacecraft has to approach and capture it. This paper presents the ASEM (Attitude Stabilization Electromagnetic Module) concept for detumbling debris in a low Earth orbit with the intention of mitigating risk during capture operations. This paper presents a preliminary design of a system whose purpose is to stabilize a target’s attitude, using an external module equipped with magnetorquers. The device, initially carried by the chaser spacecraft, is attached to the body of the target satellite. The magnetorquers are then used to detumble the target so that the chaser spacecraft can perform a safe approach prior to capture. A simplified model is used in the initial design phase to optimize the mass of the system and to size the torque rods and power source. Alternative methods for attaching the ASEM to the target from the chaser spacecraft are discussed. In addition a novel magnetic control law suitable for this application is presented. The feasibility of the concept is tested in simulations using a model based on Envisat (assuming that the ASEM is already attached to the target). Results show that a module weighing less than 20 kg can stabilize an 8-ton satellite initially rotating at 1 rpm in 21 days

An efficient sub-optimal motion planning method for attitude manoeuvres

    No full text
A motion planning technique for efficiently generating smooth spacecraft attitude slew manoeuvres is presented. The attitude trajectory (using quaternions) is shaped by a polynomial, determined by matching prescribed boundary conditions and the manoeuvre time. This method allows constraints such as limits on velocity, acceleration, jerk, and torque to be evaluated via inverse dynamics. Pointing constraints are also considered. A spin-to-spin case is presented whereby an axisazimuth parameterisation is used. The problem of time minimization (within the set of trajectories defined by the given polynomials) is addressed, and a method for analytically estimating the minimum time of a manoeuvre is proposed. The method requires low computational capacity, and a comparison with optimal control solutions shows its relative performance
