From reality to virtuality. A database for the Cyrenaican specimens from numismatic trade

The importance of auction sales catalogues in the study of any ancient coinage is unquestionable and they are of prime interest for numismatists in various ways (e.g., to gather a large body of material; to do an almost complete die-study; etc.). For all these reasons, since first catalogues started to appear frequently in the second half oh the XIX century, a complete examination would require the treatment of a considerable amount of data. With the CyReNe-Project (Cyrenaican Research Numismatic e-Project) we decided to face this task and to create a database where all the specimens minted in Cyrenaican cities and sold during the years could be collected together. The aim is to make available all these data in a structured and systematic way and, on the other hand, to safeguard this important cultural heritage. Starting from 2011, due to the numerous looting carried out against the archaeological and numismatic heritage in Libya, the presence of Cyrenaican coins on the market has increased enormously; reconstructing the pedigree of a coin is an useful tool to exclude a possible illicit origin. For these reasons we began to check past sales (more than 6000 auction catalogues and still counting) and their data will be implemented in the database. Incorrect identifications or attribution changes that have occurred throughout the history of the studies, are just some of the problems we are facing in undertaking such a project

Robust and subject-independent driving manoeuvre anticipation through Domain-Adversarial Recurrent Neural Networks

Through deep learning and computer vision techniques, driving manoeuvres can be predicted accurately a few seconds in advance. Even though adapting a learned model to new drivers and different vehicles is key for robust driver-assistance systems, this problem has received little attention so far. This work proposes to tackle this challenge through domain adaptation, a technique closely related to transfer learning. A proof of concept for the application of a Domain-Adversarial Recurrent Neural Network (DA-RNN) to multi-modal time series driving data is presented, in which domain-invariant features are learned by maximising the loss of an auxiliary domain classifier. Our implementation is evaluated using a leave-one-driver-out approach on individual drivers from the Brain4Cars dataset, as well as using a new dataset acquired through driving simulations, yielding an average increase in performance of 30% and 114% respectively compared to no adaptation. We also show the importance of fine-tuning sections of the network to optimise the extraction of domain-independent features. The results demonstrate the applicability of the approach to driver-assistance systems as well as training and simulation environments

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Frequency resolution and number of averages effects on the accuracy and dispersion of operational modal analysis results

Structural Health Monitoring techniques based on the study of the evolution of modal parameters aim to detect a structural modification relying on the results of a modal parameter estimation algorithm. Basically, a change in modal parameter values may indicate a structure evolution and possibly an ongoing damage situation. Beside structure changes there are other reasons that can cause changes in modal parameter values. Environmental and operational conditions naturally cause a variation of modal parameters. In addition the results of identification are affected by a dispersion due to the signal processing method. This paper is entirely focused on this latter aspect. The study exploits a Monte Carlo method relying upon the modal model of the G. Meazza stadium grandstands in Milan, where a permanent monitoring system is working since several years. Thanks to the modal model the response of the structure to random excitation is simulated. Numerical data are analyzed with the same algorithm used to process real data coming from the sensors that measure the dynamic response of the structure. Since the algorithm takes as input the power spectra associated to the acceleration responses of the monitored structure, modal parameter estimations are heavily affected by sub-record length, that is to say frequency resolution and number of averages used to compute power spectra. The work specifically discussed in the paper aims to investigate the separate effects of these two parameters on accuracy and spread of the estimated eigenfrequencies and non-dimensional damping ratios. Identification process spread is a key factor in assessing the real potential of the monitoring technique since represents a threshold under which is not possible to recognize a modal parameter change linked to a structural modification. Outcomes are discussed taking into account the complexity of the modal analysis performed on the proposed test case structure whose dynamic behaviour is characterized by the presence of close and highly damped modes

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
