    Immediate effects of experimental human trampling on mid-upper intertidal benthic invertebrates at the Asinara Island MPA (NW Mediterranean)

    To assess potential risks of human visitation to ecological communities, the immediate effects of human trampling were investigated experimentally on small invertebrates inhabiting mid-upper intertidal hard bottoms covered by algae. Two different experimental intensities of trampling (60 and 120 footsteps) and controls (with no trampling) were applied to quadrats 20x20 cm in size (experimental area), within the two 'no-entry, no-take' zones of the Asinara Island MPA (Italy, Mediterranean Sea). One day after trampling ended, samples of benthic fauna were collected and the animals attributed to macrofaunal and meiofaunal components. Analyses of variance on the nine most common taxa of macrofauna identified significant higher abundance of bivalves, gammarid amphipods, polychaetes, isopods, oligochaetes in controls than in trampled plots. For nematodes, polychaetes, ostracods, oligochaetes, bivalves, acari, caprellid amphipods and tanaids a significant higher abundance of meiofaunal animals was found in controls than in trampled areas. Although no information on recovery is available, these results suggest that macrofaunal and meiofaunal taxa are vulnerable to this type of disturbance

    L'Effetto del calpestio sulla meiofauna e macrofauna dell'infralitorale superiore roccioso nell'AMP dell'Isola dell'Asinara (Sardegna nord occidentale)

    La ricerca qui descritta si è svolta nell'AMP dell'Isola dell'Asinara e ha cercato di valutare l'effetto del calpestio sulla comunità zoobentonica associata ad alghe del medio- ed infralitorale superiore di fondo roccioso. È stato condotto un esperimento multifattoriale di simulazione del calpestio: in due cale `no entry, no take' sono state scelte 6 aree e, 3 intensità di calpestio sperimentale (0, 60 e 120 calpestii per quadrato di 20x20 cm), sono state attribuite a random nelle aree. I prelievi sono stati compiuti con cilindri di plastica (diametro 40 mm) e un raschietto metallico; sono stati raccolti 2 campioni per quadrato. Il materiale è stato fissato in formalina. In laboratorio sono state separate le due componenti mediante adeguati setacci; gli animali raccolti sono stati identificati e contati. Dall'analisi multivariata risulta che, per entrambe le componenti, vi è differenza significativa tra i controlli e le aree dove è stato effettuato il calpestio (ANOSIM macrofauna p=0,4% R=0,45, meiofauna p=0,5% R=0,50). Inoltre dai confronti a coppie tra i livelli di calpestio risulta una differenza significativa tra i controlli e le due intensità di trampling (60 e 120), mentre non vi è differenza significativa tra le due intensità di calpestio. Sebbene non si possa fare nessuna previsione sul recupero della comunità, questi risultati suggeriscono che sia la macrofauna sia la meiofauna siano estremamente vulnerabili a questo tipo di disturbo

    Rocky intertidal platforms at Asinara Island Marine Protected Area (Italy, Mediterranean Sea) were experimentally trampled to assess the impact of human visitation on polychaetes. Trampling at two different experimental intensities (60,120 steps/20x20 cm quadrat) and controls were applied at two locations (“no-entry, no-take” zones) of the MPA. One day after the experimental trampling, benthic samples were collected and the polychaetes counted and identified. Overall 1146 individuals were collected;Salvatoria clavata, Polyophthalmus pictus, Syllis prolifera, Amphiglena mediterranea, Fabricia stellaris, Platynereis dumeriliiandSphaerosyllis tayloriwere the most abundant species. Analyses of variance on all polychaetes and on each of the important polychaete species showed a significant higher abundance in controls than in trampled plots. Given the short-term decline in abundance, these results suggest that polychaetes are vulnerable even to the lowest experimental level of trampling

    The effect of human trampling on the abundance of small invertebrates inhabiting rocky shallow bottoms was studied at Asinara Island MPA. To this aim we have conducted two experiments. The first was a quantitative study and tested the hypothesis that small invertebrates are more abundant at no-entry locations than at the location visited by tourists through time (before, during and after tourist season). The second was a manipulative experiment and tested the hypothesis that the abundance of small invertebrates is indirectly related to experimental trampling intensities. The effect due to tourist visitation was not highlighted on overall assemblages, suggesting that present seasonal tourist load at the MPA does not cause a significantly negative effect on the zoobenthic community studied. Although tourists exhibited trampling activity at the visited location, none of taxa examined showed a significant lower abundance during and strictly after the end of seasonal tourism peak in the visited location, rather than at control locations. However, results obtained with the second experiment suggested that the effects of different experimental trampling intensities on small invertebrates were variable among taxa. The experimental trampling caused immediate declines in the density of tanaids, nematodes, acari, bivalves, gammarids, echinoderms, isopods, and harpacticoids. For some of these taxa a recovery in abundance was observed within one month. This kind of data may offer important information to estimate the number of visitors compatible with the sensitivity of zoobenthic assemblages, and may substantially contribute to appropriate MPA management

Se aplicaron dos diferentes intensidades experimentales (60,120, pasos sobre una superficie de 20x20cm) y control en dos zonas (zonas definidas como “no-entry, no-take”) de la AMP. Un día después de la perturbación experimental, se recogían muestras bentónicas identificando y cuantificando los poliquetos. Un total de 1.146 poliquetos fueron recogidos; Salvatoria clavata, Polyophthalmus pictus, Syllis prolifera, Amphiglena mediterranea, Fabricia stellaris, Platynereis dumerilii y Sphaerosyllis taylori fueron las especies más abundantes. El análisis de la variación global de los poliquetos y de sus especies permitieron observar una abundancia significativamente superior en las áreas de control que en las parcelas pisoteadas. Considerando en el corto plazo la disminuciòn de la abundancia, estos resultados sugieren que los poliquetos son vulnerables, includo en el nivel experimental más bajo probado. &nbsp

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
