    No full text
ABSTRACT Introduction: The article presents an assessment of the figure of Ramiro Guerra y Sánchez given not only by its author but also by valuable intellectuals contemporary with Guerra such as Carlos Rafael Rodríguez, Raúl Roa, Medardo Vitier, Fernando Ortiz, Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring. Methods: In this study about Ramiro Guerra, a distinction of his intellectual productionis made along two main lines: the texts with pedagogical content and critical analysis to Cuban education and the historiographic essay. Results: Specifically, the author pauses in the analysis of two works considered «minor» within his historiographical task: Mudos Testigos (1948) and Por las veredas del Pasado (1957), which demonstrate the valuable contribution of Ramiro Guerra to the social, regional and rural family history in Cuba between the end of the 19.th century and the beginning of the 20.th century. Conclusions: The conclusions are aimed at placing Ramiro Guerra in a very important position within the Cuban intelligentsia of the 20.th century and to understand his validity in Cuban historical studies.RESUMEN: Introducción: En el artículo se presenta una valoración de la figura de Ramiro Guerra y Sánchez dada no solamente por el autor del trabajo sino por valiosos intelectuales contemporáneos con Guerra como Carlos Rafael Rodríguez, Raúl Roa, Medardo Vitier, Fernando Ortiz, Emilio Roig de Leuchsenring.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Dollarization and semi-dollarization in Ecuador

Over the 1980s and 1990s, GDP growth had stagnated because of oil export price volatility and natural disasters, the sacrifice of capital formation to heavy external public debt service, and incomplete and uneven structural reform. The exchange rate depreciation that proved continually necessary to sustain the net-export surplus and limit external debt accumulation induced Ecuadorians to dollarize spontaneously. The 1998 shocks affected real economic activity--hence bank loan portfolios, and widened the fiscal and current acccount deficits. The external imbalance led to exchange rate depreciation. Dollar-denominated bank loans whose borrowers lacked dollar income increasingly turned non-performing. At the same time, the depreciation swelled the locla currency value of dollar deposit liabilities. Many depositors, fearing that banks had become unsafe, withdrew, and over 1999 the Central Bank had to provide banks massive liquidity support. By year's end, the resulting monetary issue ledto the exchange rate collapse and incipient hyperinflation that forced the move to full dollarization. Ecuador's Central Bank will continue operating, using its foreign exchange holdings to carry out limited liquidity management and lender-of-last-resort activities. Ecuador's public accounts and banking system remain vulnerable to commodity-price and natural shocks. Exchange rate adjustment and monetary expansion are no longer available, however, to manage the external accounts, accommodate the public deficit, or assist failing banks. Further structural reform remains essential to assure fiscal discipline and banking system safety.Banks&Banking Reform,Economic Theory&Research,Payment Systems&Infrastructure,Environmental Economics&Policies,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Economic Theory&Research,Banks&Banking Reform,Environmental Economics&Policies,Public Sector Economics&Finance,Financial Intermediation

This paper summarizes and examines some of the philosophical considerations in regard to animal predation seen as an ethical problem, that is, of concern to humans and their actions. The author will assess some stances in favor of humanity acting to preserve and care for animals, as well as others which, on the contrary, argue for human non-intervention in the lives of animals and the normal life cycle of nature. Lastly, the author will defend her view that vegetarianism is the only ethically justifiedform of human intervention in order to reduce animal predation, whilst rejecting the interventionist viewpoint, which intends to stop all kinds of predation within the animal kingdom.Licenciada en Ciencias de la Educación en la Especialización de Filosofía, Sociología y EconomíaCuenc

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Background: Skin grafts are common procedures for patients who require it for various reasons. The prevalence of graft complications and associated factors in our environment is still unknown. Objective: To determine the prevalence and factors associated with post-surgical complications in patients undergoing skin grafts, at the José Carrasco Arteaga Hospital, during the period January 2016 to June 2019. Method and materials: This is a cross-sectional analytical study. The sample consisted of 231 medical records of patients undergoing skin grafts. The data were collected using a form designed by the author and tabulated in the SPSS 15 software. The descriptive statistics were carried out with the measures of centralization (mean) and dispersion (DS). The associated factors were analyzed with OR, 95% CI and the value of Chi2; The hypothesis was accepted with the value of p <0.05. Expected results: The prevalence of complications was 9.5%, with the infection being the most frequent (4.3%). The hospital stays greater than 30 days was found as a factor associated with skin graft complications (OR 6.8; 95% CI 2.4-19.05; p 0.000). In contrast, there was no association or statistical significance with age over 60 years (OR 0.4; 95% CI 0.12 - 1.51; p 0.18); surgical time greater than 120 min (OR 0.7; 95% CI 0.09 - 5.76; p 0.75); and skin graft placed in lower limbs (OR 0,6; 95% CI 0,24 - 1,51; p 0,28) but, in addition there was association but no significance with malnutrition (OR 1.9; IC95 % 0.71 - 5.05; p 0.19). and grafted body surface greater than 15% (OR 2,3; 95% CI 0.62 - 9.09; p 0.19). Conclusions: The complication of the skin graft in the José Carrasco Arteaga hospital was less than what was reported in the literature, and the associated factor was the hospital stay longer than 30 days.Especialista en Cirugía GeneralCuenc

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    Get PDF
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
