    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Testing visible ozone injury within a Light Exposed Sampling Site as a proxy for ozone risk assessment for European forests

    Biologically meaningful and cost-effective indicators are needed for assessing and monitoring the impacts of tropospheric ozone (O3) on vegetation and are required in Europe by the National Emission Ceilings Directive (2016). However, a clear understanding on the best suited indicators is missing. The MOTTLES (MOnitoring ozone injury for seTTing new critical LEvelS) project set up a new generation network for O3 monitoring in forest plots in order to: 1) estimate the stomatal O3 fluxes (Phytotoxic Ozone Dose above a threshold Y of uptake, PODY); and 2) collect visible foliar O3 injury, both within the forest plot (ITP) and along the Light Exposed Sampling Site (LESS) along the forest edge. Nine forest sites at high O3 risk were selected across Italy over 2017 − 2019 and significant correlations (p < 0.05) were found between the percentage of symptomatic plant species within the LESS, and POD1 (PODY, with Y = 1 nmol O3 m−2 s−1) calculated for mixed forest species (r = 0.53) and with the occurrence and severity of visible foliar O3 injury on the dominant species in the plots (r = 0.65). A generic flux-based critical level for mixed forest species was derived within the LESS and it was recommended using 11 mmol m−2 POD1 as the critical level for forest protection against O3 injury, similar to the critical level obtained in the ITP (12 mmol m−2 POD1). It was concluded that the frequency of symptomatic plant species within a LESS is a suitable and effective plant-response indicator of phytotoxic O3 levels in forest monitoring. LESS is a non-destructive, less complex and less time-consuming approach compared to the ITP for monitoring foliar O3 injury in the long term. Assessing visible foliar O3 injury in the ITP might only underestimate the O3 risk assessment at individual sites. These results are biologically meaningful and useful to monitoring experts and environmental policy makers

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Effects of nitrogen and phosphorus imbalance on photosynthetic traits of poplar Oxford clone under ozone pollution

    Ozone (O3) pollution and the availability of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) in the soil both affect plant photosynthesis and chlorophyll (Chl) content, but the interaction of O3 and nutrition is unclear. We postulated that the nutritional condition changes plant photosynthetic responses to O3. An O3- sensitive poplar clone (Oxford) was subject to two N levels (N0,0 kg N ha− 1; N80, 80 kg N ha− 1), two P levels (P0, 0 kg P ha− 1; P80, 80 kg P ha− 1) and three levels of O3 exposure (ambient concentration, AA; 1.5 × AA; 2.0 × AA) over a growing season in an O3 free air controlled exposure (FACE) facility. The daily change of leaf gas exchange and dark respiration (Rd) were investigated at mid-summer (August). Chl a fluorescence was measured three times in July, August and September. At the end of the growing season, Chl content was measured. It was found that Chl content, the maximum quantum yield (Fv/Fm), Chl a fluorescence performance index (PI) and gas exchange were negatively affected by elevated O3. Phosphorus may mitigate the O3-induced reduction of the ratio of photosynthesis to stomatal conductance, while it exacerbated the O3-induced loss of Fv/Fm. Nitrogen alleviated negative effects of O3 on Fv/Fm and PI in July. Ozone-induced loss of net photosynthetic rate was mitigated by N in medium O3 exposure (1.5 × AA). However, such a mitigation effect was not observed in the higher O3 level (2.0 × AA). Nitrogen addition exacerbated O3-induced increase of Rd suggesting an increased respiratory carbon loss in the presence of O3 and N. This may result in a further reduction of the net carbon gain for poplars exposed to O3

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    The Italian endemic forest plants: an annotated inventory and synthesis of knowledge

    Background and aims – Forests are among the most threatened ecosystems worldwide, and endemic plants are often a vulnerable component of the flora of a given territory. So far, however, understory forest endemics of southern Europe have received little attention and are poorly known for several aspects. Material and methods – We developed the first list of native vascular plants that are restricted to Italian forests. Available information on taxonomy, regional distribution, ecology, biology, functional traits, and conservation status was collected for each taxon, allowing to identify major knowledge gaps and calculate baseline statistics. Key results – The list includes 134 taxa, most of which are linked to closed-canopy forest habitats, while the others are also found in margins and gaps. The forest and non-forest Italian endemic flora differed in terms of taxonomic and life-form distribution. The rate and density of forest endemism increased with decreasing latitude and were highest in Sicily, Calabria, and Basilicata, where paleoendemic mono- or oligotypic genera also occur. Endemic phanerophytes were especially numerous on islands. Beech and deciduous oak forests were the most important habitats, but hygrophilous woodlands also host numerous endemics. Overall, the ecology, biology, and functional traits of the forest endemic taxa are still poorly known. The ratio diploids/polyploids was highest in the south and on the islands. Almost 24% of the taxa were assessed as “Critically Endangered”, “Endangered”, or “Vulnerable”, and 24% were categorized as “Data Deficient”, based on the IUCN system. Increasing frequency and intensity of fires was the most frequent threat. Conclusions – This work can contribute to implement the European forest plant species list and serve as a basis for further research on a unique biological heritage of the continent. However, more knowledge about these globally rare taxa is needed, to support their conservation in changing forest landscapes

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
