No full textThis study pertains to the Christian siege of Esztergom on May 1594, during which Balassi Bálint – the most famous Reinassance Hungarian poet – died. There are few Italian sources about this siege and Balassi
is never mentioned in these documents. In spite of this, we have found a XVIth century letter, kept in the Ambrosiana Library of Milan, in which a certain “Petrino ingegnero” reports about the poet wounding on May 30. Therefore the aim of this study is to publish this letter using the Italian philology criteria for single witness editions, in order to make this important text available to the readers. Firstly, Balassi cult and
the already known historical sources about this battle are described; secondly, the edition is given, together with a philological introduction, a linguistic analysis of the text, and some useful biographical and prosopographical notes. In conclusion, this dispatch, together with the typical documentary sources, could really help historians to throw light

No full textThis study investigates the Milanese ephemeral architectures and the Arcadian laudatory poetry related to the “joys” for the birth of the Archduke Leopold of Habsburg, Charles VI’s first-born son, in 1716. The June 7 solemn mass in San Celso church and the May 17 and June 7 fireworks shows at the Sforzesco Castle and the Duomo square – which included two massive machines on the theme of “The Triumph of Spring” and “Hercules holding up the world” – are reconstructed on the basis of many orders from the religious and civil authorities and printed reports by Tommaso Ceva and Paraino. In the second part of the study, eleven sonnets – related to “The Triumph of Spring” fireworks machine and composed by some Arcadian poets of the Milanese colony – are published with a commentary regarding philological, retorical, and prosopographical aspects

No full textThe article investigates the cultural and historical relations established between the Kingdom of Hungary and the Italian states during the reign of Matthias Corvinus. The first part of the article briefly reconstructs the most important artistic, scientific, and intellectual exchanges between Italy and Hungary during that period. The second part analyzes 13 documents preserved in the Ambrosiana Library of Milan which may serve as additional sources on Matthias’ era. The documents are divided into three categories: texts specifically dedicated to Matthias; letters or instructions concerning his reign, particularly his relations with the Republic of Venice and his wars against the Turks and the Bohemian Hussites; and historiographical texts centered on Matthias and his family. The list of documents is accompanied by transcriptions of their incipits and explicits, brief summaries, and relevant bibliography

No full textThis study focuses on the miscellaneous codex G 275 inf., which is kept in the Ambrosiana Library of Milan. This codex contains more than fifty Italian and Latin documents which pertain to the 1551-1552 Hapsburg campaigns – guided by the famous captain Giovanni Battista Castaldo – against the Turks in Hungary and in Transylvania. These documents were often written on behalf of important historical characters - such as Ferdinand I Hapsburg, Queen Elisabeth of Hungary, and Giovanni Battista Castaldo -, but the codex also contains copies of military instructions, notes, noblemen lists, etc. Therefore, the aim of this study is to present the extraordinary cultural heritage handed down by this manuscript in order to improve the knowledge of the XVI century Hungarian history

No full textThe study intends to analyze the documents of Magyar relevance of the Paduan library of the scholar Gian Vincenzo Pinelli (1535-1601), which was purchased by Cardinal Federico Borromeo for the Ambrosiana Library of Milan in 1609. After a general presentation of the collection and of its adventurous fate, the study focuses on two factitious codices, marked BAMi G 276 inf. and BAMi D 489 inf., which contain respectively 31 and 12 dispatches concerning the Magyar events of 1566 (from February to December) and 1569 (from January to October)
