Between Exile and Utopia: Carlos Alberto Torres and the Making of the Political Sociology of Education
Carlos Alberto Torres has been one of the most prolific and influential theorists of education over the past half century and is the preeminent scholar in the founding and development of the subfield of the political sociology of education, which critically examines the operations of power and inequality in education, their role in social and cultural reproduction, and their effects on the concepts and practices of democracy, citizenship, and multiculturalism. This dissertation provides the first major study of Torres’ work to chart and critically assess his intellectual development, theoretical contributions, and influence within that subfield, exploring both his experiences growing up in Argentina and living in the United States that shaped his perspective on the relationship between power and knowledge as well as the broader historical and intellectual environment that led to the emergence of critical studies within education that eventually gave rise to the political sociology of education. A historical-biographical approach is taken to provide a brief intellectual biography of Torres, and a historical, theoretical, and philosophical approach is taken to examine the intellectual context in which his work and the framework of the political sociology education emerged and developed. That framework is then applied to two prominent contemporary problems within higher education, the student loan debt crisis and the reevaluation of the purpose and value of college, to critically assess its ability both to analyze the causes and conditions of those problems as well as to provide viable solutions that support and enable democratic dialogue and engagement

The promotion of global citizenship has become one of the objectives of education systems in various parts of the world. This highlighted the widening of the idea of citizenship from the national to the global sphere, due to the effects produced by globalization. If the emergence of global elements within the traditional concept of education seems to be a widely acquired fact, the conceptualization of the term «global citizenship education» remains more problematic. Therefore, it is necessary to reflect and dialogue in order to limit from the pedagogical point of view those elements of educational experience that can be understood within education for global citizenship in the educational context. This paper introduces a conversation with Carlos Alberto Torres on the subject of educating for global citizenship, in relation to the situation of university research, teaching and learning in the United States. Torres chairs the UNESCO chair for global citizenship education at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and is the founder and director of the Paulo Freire Institute of São Paulo, Buenos Aires and UCLA. The dialogue addresses the theoretical and practical perspectives related to global citizenship, with an analysis aimed in particular at focusing on the connection between culture and power, as well as the interrelations between the economic, political and cultural spheres in the modern university. The aim is to offer a portrait - as detailed and updated as possible - of education for global citizenship seen as a means of achieving social justice.La promozione della cittadinanza globale è diventata uno degli obiettivi dei sistemi educativi in varie parti del mondo, che hanno così messo in evidenza l’ampliamento dell’idea di cittadinanza dalla sfera nazionale a quella globale, a causa degli effetti prodotti dalla globalizzazione. Se l’emergere di elementi globali all’interno del tradizionale concetto di educazione sembra essere un fatto acquisito, più problematica resta la concettualizzazione del termine «educazione alla cittadinanza globale». Occorre, dunque, riflettere criticamente al fine di circoscrivere dal punto di vista pedagogico quegli elementi di esperienza educativa che possono essere compresi all’interno dell’educazione alla cittadinanza globale nel contesto educativo. Il presente contributo introduce una conversazione con Carlos Alberto Torres sul tema dell'educazione alla cittadinanza globale, in relazione alla situazione della ricerca universitaria, dell'insegnamento e dell'apprendimento negli Stati Uniti. Torres presiede la cattedra UNESCO per l'educazione alla cittadinanza globale alla University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), ed è il fondatore e il direttore dell’istituto Paulo Freire di San Paolo, Buenos Aires e UCLA. II dialogo affronta le prospettive teoriche e pratiche relative alla Cittadinanza globale, con un'analisi volta in particolare a focalizzare la connessione tra cultura e potere, oltre che le interrelazioni tra sfera economica, politica e culturale nella moderna università. Lo scopo è quello di offrire un ritratto dell’educazione per la cittadinanza globale vista come mezzo per il conseguimento della giustizia sociale

Critical Global Citizenship Education: an interview with Carlos Alberto Torres
A entrevista concedida por Carlos Alberto Torres teve como objetivo analisar as condições e possibilidades da Educação para a Cidadania Global Crítica contribuir com a convivência humana pacífica e sustentável de forma a elevar a justiça social e ambiental. Nascida da parceria entre as Universidades – do Vale do Rio dos Sinos e de Caxias do Sul, coordenadoras da Cátedra Unesco Educação em Cidadania Global e Justiça Socioambiental – a entrevista foi uma das ações desenvolvidas na visita do professor Torres na Unisinos e na UCS. Contou com o planejamento metodológico e execução por meio da entrevista semiestruturada. Por fim, proporcionou uma compreensão sobre a complexidade dos três temas que ancoraram o debate: educação, cidadania e global; reconhecendo o primeiro como imprescindível para a articulação com os demais na direção da democracia e da paz.The interview with Carlos Alberto Torres aimed to explore the conditions and potential of Critical Global Citizenship Education in fostering peaceful and sustainable human coexistence while enhancing social and environmental justice. This initiative emerged from a collaboration between the University of Vale do Rio dos Sinos (Unisinos) and the University of Caxias do Sul (UCS), coordinators of the UNESCO Chair in Global Citizenship Education and Socio-Environmental Justice. The interview was part of Professor Torres' visit to Unisinos and UCS, conducted through a methodologically planned semi-structured interview. Ultimately, the discussion offered insights into the complexities of the three main themes anchoring the debate: education, citizenship, and global perspectives, recognizing the essential role of education in articulating the other concepts towards democracy and peace
