Composition for cardinal directions by decomposing horizontal and vertical constraints

    No full text
In this paper, we demonstrate how to group the nine cardinal directions into sets and use them to compute a composition table. Firstly, we define each cardinal direction in terms of a certain set of constraints. This is followed by decomposing the cardinal directions into sets corresponding to the horizontal and vertical constraints. We apply two different techniques to compute the composition of these sets. The first technique is an algebraic computation while the second is the typical technique of reasoning with diagrams. The rationale of applying the latter is for confirmation purposes. The use of typical composition tables for existential inference is rarely demonstrated. Here, we shall demonstrate how to use the composition table to answer queries requiring the common forward reasoning as well as existential inference. Also, we combine mereological and cardinal direction relations to create a hybrid model which is more expressive

A Hybrid Reasoning Model for “Whole and Part” Cardinal Direction Relations

    No full text
We have shown how the nine tiles in the projection-based model for cardinal directions can be partitioned into sets based on horizontal and vertical constraints (called Horizontal and Vertical Constraints Model) in our previous papers (Kor and Bennett, 2003 and 2010). In order to come up with an expressive hybrid model for direction relations between two-dimensional single-piece regions (without holes), we integrate the well-known RCC-8 model with the above-mentioned model. From this expressive hybrid model, we derive 8 basic binary relations and 13 feasible as well as jointly exhaustive relations for the x- and y-directions, respectively. Based on these basic binary relations, we derive two separate composition tables for both the expressive and weak direction relations. We introduce a formula that can be used for the computation of the composition of expressive and weak direction relations between “whole or part” regions. Lastly, we also show how the expressive hybrid model can be used to make several existential inferences that are not possible for existing models

Voting and the Cardinal Aggregation of Judgments

    No full text
The paper elaborates the idea that voting is an instance of the aggregation of judgments, this being a more general concept than the aggregation of preferences. To aggregate judgments one must first measure them. I show that such aggregation has been unproblematic whenever it has been based on an independent and unrestricted scale. The scales analyzed in voting theory are either context dependent or subject to unreasonable restrictions. This is the real source of the diverse 'paradoxes of voting' that would better be termed 'voting pathologies'. The theory leads me to advocate what I term evaluative voting. It can also be called utilitarian voting as it is based on having voters express their cardinal preferences. The alternative that maximizes the sum wins. This proposal operationalizes, in an election context, the abstract cardinal theories of collective choice due to Fleming and Harsanyi. On pragmatic grounds, I argue for a three valued scale for general elections

The artistic patronage Of Gil De Albornoz (1302-1367), a cardinal in context

    No full text
This thesis examines the artistic patronage of Gil de Albornoz (d. 1367), Archbishop of Toledo (1338-1350), Cardinal priest of S. Clemente (1350-1366) and Cardinal bishop of Sabina (1356-1367). The first chapter delineates his early career in Spain until he left for Avignon in 1350. The analysis of documentary and archaeological evidence re-defines his input in the cathedral of Toledo, and the importance of his Augustinian foundation in Villaviciosa del Tajuña. The second chapter concentrates on the legations of Albornoz in Italy, and the fortified palaces and castles he commissioned along the Lands of St. Peter as he achieved success in his mission. This thesis focuses on a limited number of the most representative fortresses and palaces. The third chapter analyses Albornoz’s artistic patronage on a private basis, and concentrates on his burial chapel of St. Catherine in the Lower Church of San Francesco in Assisi and the Collegio di Spagna in Bologna. The fourth chapter dissects his will and the surviving objects in Toledo. Comparison with the testamentary donations of contemporary cardinals provides a parameter within which to measure his relevance as an artistic patron. Finally, the fifth chapter concentrates on the important sepulchre in the chapel of St. Ildefonso in the Cathedral of Toledo and its context

Cardinal Scales for Public Health Evaluation

    No full text
Policy studies often evaluate health for a population by summing the individuals’ health as measured by a scale that is ordinal or that depends on risk attitudes. We develop a method using a different type of preferences, called preference intensity or cardinal preferences, to construct scales that measure changes in health. The method is based on a social welfare model that relates preferences between changes in an individual’s health to preferences between changes in health for a population.public health evaluation; social welfare; preference intensity; health state

Les peintres aux prises avec Le décor. Introduction

    No full text

Cardinal Greenway safety analysis : an application of standard trail design, maintenance, and management safety techniques

    No full text
The purpose of this research paper was to conduct a safety analysis of the Cardinal Greenway rail-trail based upon standard trail design, maintenance, and management techniques. The analysis examined indirect safety issues including trail design, vegetation and surface maintenance, and signage. Direct safety issues, such as medical emergency management and crime prevention techniques, were also examined. Trail safety analysis forms were designed for use in the safety evaluation. This safety analysis was intended to provide a comprehensive analysis from the perspective of an independent consultant. The analysis was very subjective at times. Due to the subjective nature of the analysis and related forms, the analysis was not to be completed by trail management. The safety analysis forms were created to examine the unique characteristics of linear and urban park trails and are not intended for use in the park/forest setting. This type of analysis would be applicable to rail-trails and similar trails throughout the United States. The Cardinal Greenway is a multi-county, rail-trail project based in Muncie, Indiana. Cardinal Greenway, Inc, a private, non-profit organization, manages the privately owned trail. The results of the analysis were provided to Cardinal Greenway management, along with recommendations for trail safety improvement.Thesis (M.A.)Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Managemen
