The modernist angel: Art at the Limits of the Human in D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy

    No full text
PhDThe subject of this thesis is a figure that might provisionally be called the *modemist angel'. Focusing on modernist literature, and more particularly on the work of D. H. Lawrence, H. D. and Mina Loy, it aims to isolate from the many angels found in all periods and all types of art a historically specific and intellectually coherent paradigm: an angel of and for its modernist times. A figure of precisely this type could be said to exist in the form of Walter Benjamin's 'angel of history'. Critics who address the question of the modern angel in texts by Franz Kafka and Rainer Maria Rilke often do so in conjunction with the problem posed by the angel of history. Beginning with a chapter on Benjamin, this thesis nevertheless follows a different trajectory. Over five chapters, it explores a modernist landscape formed not only by Lawrence, H. D. and Loy, but also by European and American writers such as A. R. Orage, Allen Upward, Ezra Pound, Wallace Stevens, Havelock Ellis, Edward Carpenter, Sigmund Freud and Friedrich Nietzsche. Although the angel that emerges from this investigation might, in some respects, be said to anticipate Benjamin's later version, this figure is also very different, standing for a project that is distinctively, and recognisably, modernist in nature. He/she (the sex of the modernist angel is often open to question) represents an attempt to reconcile the divine responsibilities of the artist with the material and gendered conditions of being, specifically of being human, in the modem world. This thesis looks again at the clash of intellectual paradigms in the early-twentieth century - notably, the confrontation of the Romantic view of art as a superhuman or sacred undertaking with the psychoanalytical or evolutionary idea that all human endeavour is underpinned by sub-human motives - and suggests the angel as a new and instructive figure through which to think the perilous limits between the human and the divine in modernist literature

Why Man Cannot Be an Angel (Remarks on Pascal’s Maxim: “Man Is Neither an Angel nor a Beast, the Unhappiness Lies in the Fact that Whoever Wishes to Be an Angel, Often Becomes a Beast”)

    No full text
The article discusses why humans cannot be angels. It begins by offering a simple answer that humans cannot be angels because they are human, but the author delves deeper into the subject. The author explores the distinction between humans and angels and the implications of Pascal’s maxim: “Man is neither an angel nor a beast; the unhappiness lies in the fact that whoever wishes to be an angel often becomes a beast.” The article argues that this maxim reveals much about human nature and condition. The article discusses how the modern era’s pursuit of cognitive absolutism further detaches humans from their true nature and realities. This detach-ment, along with an anthropocentric vision of mastery over nature, results in unforeseen consequences such as the recent pandemic. The article warns against ignoring human limitations while also advocating for a balanced view of human potential. Ultimately, it suggests that the desire to transcend human nature can lead to a loss of self-awareness and a distorted perspective on the relationship between humans, nature, and the divine.BRONISŁAW WILDSTEIN – publicysta, dziennikarz, pisarz. O social e o cultural na obra de Vigotski The social and the cultural in Vigotski's work

    No full text
This text constitutes of an analysis of two theoretical categories considered fundamental for an understanding reading of Vigotski's work: the social and the cultural. The text begins with the 1929 Manuscript, where the author outlines these questions, object of a latter elaboration. The meaning analysis that these categories have for Vigotski is done through the History concept proposed by the author, which shows the matrix that is the reference from his analyses: the historical materialism and dialectics. Analysed these two categories, two questions are discussed after them and that constitutes the central nucleus of the author's work: the social-cultural nature of the high mental functions which according to the author, they are social relationships internalized, and the semiotic mechanism that explains these social relations conversion in functions of the person

Because of her carving she was famous in all over Šiauliai county. In 2009 this woman became a winner of the most honorable award for a folk artist – the Paulius Galaunė Prize. The condintion of coloured O. Šimkienė’s sculptures at the moment stored in Akmenė Area Museum is quite poor. The artist use to be paying more attention to the expression of her ideas that to their technical implementation. In some cases she used to select paints more suitable for embodying of her vision, however, not so well interacting in between. \u8fuite often she painted on the wood without proper preparation of it. That is why in the course of time the polychromatic layer has degraded, paint started to wriggle and sculptures had to be preserved immediately. Some time ago a pair of painted sculptures (“Angel” – h 39 cm and “Kneeler Angel” – h 33 cm) created in 1982 by O. Šimkienė had been brought to Lithuanian Art Museum’s Pranas Gudynas Centre for Restoration. They were conserved there. Author of this publication discusses the selection of sculptures’ conservation techniques and the proceeding of this work itself. At the end of the article author highlights the fact that wooden carving should be conserved only complying with a set of technological guidelines. Conservation must guarantee work’s survival and durability. It is important to assure the use of compatible materials that could bond to each other quite well in order to save an authentic image during expanding and shrinking of wooden material conditioned by various atmospheric conditions. Long lasting observation shows that folk artists’ reluctance to admit technological requirements of paining wooden sculpture and carvings in the course of time can noticeably reduce the value of their creations and to destroy embodiments even of the finest ideas

    No full text
This dissertation thesis proposes the analysis of the trajectory of the manga Angel Sanctuarys protagonist, from author Yuki Kaori, originally published in Japan between 1994 and 2000, considering Joseph Campbells Heros Journey, in order to trace his profile as a contemporary Japanese manga hero. It also proposes the analysis of the mangas dialog with the Judeo-Christian mythology, main source of the authors inspiration and references for the confection of her story. To do so, the characteristic elements of comic books and the Heros Journey are presented, so that they can be applied to Angel Sanctuary, in which the journeys steps and archetypes are indicated, as well as their relations to the mythologies in which they are based. The analysis points to a difference between typical Japanese thinking, that tends to face the presence of opposing forces inside a single being and in nature with naturality, in contrast with the well-defined separation between Good and Evil existent in Judeo-Christian religions

The purpose of this essay is to highlight the importance that security guards have gained due to the work they carry out in all the places where they provide their protection services to citizens and to the areas entrusted to their care 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In addition to the responsibilities of the position and established by Colombian regulations, security guards must complement their functions with work and responsibilities aimed at preventing, stopping and dissuading threats and risk factors that may affect the integrity of people or property they are in charge of, without exercising functions of the public force. However, the security guard must attend in due form, the claims of the users and adopt immediate measures in the case of being involved by action or omission in acts that threaten the goods or people to whom he provides surveillance of protection. These responsibilities impact their work and generate work stress in 65.3 % according to study by the Universidad del Rosario, from which the author highlights that, by increasing insecurity rates, the workload of security guards has gone increasing in their services, affecting their personal, family and social environment, as well as their performance.Especializació

The Polemic over the Angel Lands as a Literary-Historical Issue

    No full text
The subject of the study is an analysis of historiographic position of Jozef Felix´s article published in 1946 O nové cesty v próze alebo problém „anjelských zemí“ v našej literatúre /After New Ways in Prose or the Issue of „Angel Lands“ in Our Literature and the polemic it caused at that time. The author focuses on revealing the reasons which allowed Slovak Marxist literary historiography to label Felix´s article as the starting point when Slovak after-war prose „definitely leant towards“ Socialist Realism. The author opposes this literary-historical construct by claiming that Felix´s article and the related polemic were a part of the argument about what is modern in Slovak literature in 1946, and not a part of the argument between Modern Slovak literature and Literature of Socialist Realism. The latter argument arose only subsequently and it was promtped by the political situation in Czechoslovakia in 1948

Autor istražuje »Anđela Čuvara«, tiskovni medij za djecu i mladež, mjesečnik u prvoj polovini 20. st. u Hrvatskoj. Koliko je autoru poznato, do sada nisu postojala istraživanja o tom predmetu. Članak je strukturiran u četiri dijela. U prvom dijelu autor donosi opće podatke kojima čitatelja upoznaje s naslovom i podnaslovom, vremenom izlaženja, mjestima uređivanja, glavnim urednicima i suradnicima, kao i s općim značenjem toga mjesečnika u Crkvi u Hrvata i hrvatskome narodu. U trećem dijelu, primjereno tematskom težištu, autor u pet dimenzija ističe višeznačni doprinos »Anđela Čuvara« religioznom odgoju i općem odgoju i obrazovanju u Hrvatskoj. The author researches the Croatian monthly magazine for children and youth »Guardian Angel« from the fi rst half of the 20th century. As far as the author knows, no research has been conducted on this subject matter. The article is structured into four parts. In part one the author offers general information regarding the title and subtitle, date and place of issuing, the editors and publishing staff and the general signifi cance of this monthly magazine for the Church in Croatia and the Croatian people. Furthermore, the fi rst part has two additions: a chronological list of the editors and places of publishing and an index of the »Guardian Angel« by year alongside the content. In part two, for a better (historical) understanding the author places »Guardian Angel« in the context of the emergence and development of »books for children« in Europe. The author believes that this research in that historical context could foster the establishment of the historical development and affi rmation of youth magazines in the fi rst half of the 20th century. In the third part the author underlines in fi ve dimensions the signifi cant contribution »Guardian Angel« had on religious education and the general formation and education in Croatia. In that sense, the following two contributions are especially stressed. Since the publication of »Guardian Angel« coincides with the fi rst phase of the catechetical movement in Europe and Croatia, the author claims that the magazine’s primary contribution is its popularizing the so-called psychological methods in religious education. Furthermore, as seen in the content of »Guardian Angel«, which is predominately literary-poetic prose, the author believes that the magazine’s second contribution is its moral education and conscience formation for children and youth. In part four the author brings four thematical outlines with three subtitles and a refl ection for further researching. The conclusion emphasizes some important concluding remarks of historical and contemporary signifi cance

Roberto Gerhard’s Sound Compositions: A Historical-Philological Perspective. Archive, Process, Intent and reenactment

    No full text
This research advances the current state of knowledge in the field of early tape music both empirically and methodologically. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the impact that the electronic medium exerted in the musical thinking of Roberto Gerhard, one of the most outspoken, prolific and influential composers in the Spanish diaspora whose musical legacy, for the most part unknown, is a major landmark in the early history of electroacoustic music. Gerhard’s personal tape collection, one of the largest historical archives of its kind reported in the literature, is exceptional for both its antiquity (50+-year-old tapes) and its abundance of production materials. Through the digitisation and analysis of the composer’s tape collection this research argues that the empirical study of audio documents sets out a basis for a broader understanding of textual processes. More specifically, the research demonstrates that the reconstruction of works based on magnetic tape sketches is a powerful method to advance the understanding of early tape music. This research also examines Gerhard’s sound compositions in relation to the post-war context in which they were composed. Finally, this research presents performance documentation that proposes an approach to the electroacoustic music repertoire in which creativity is not at odds with rigor and critical discernment demonstrating that archival study can be closely aligned to the concept of re-enactment
