Saints and Sanctity for Critical Times: the Hagiography of Caterina da Racconigi
The hagiography of the prophet and Dominican tertiary Caterina da Racconigi (1476-1547) is an impressive testimony of the construction of sanctity in sixteenth-century Italy. The hagiographic narrative responds to the often-contrasting needs of the common people disappointed by the corrupt clergy and seeking a path to salvation; to the clergy that strove to revive popular devotion; and to some parts of the humanist circles, looking for an answer to the religious and intellectual doubt that especially originated after the Reformation. Through the analysis of some passages of the two extant hagiographies of Caterina da Racconigi – Vitta et legenda, written by Caterina’s confessors, and Compendio delle cose mirabili, written by the philosopher Gianfrancesco Pico della Mirandola – this article examinates the multi-layered meanings attributed to sanctity during the religious crisis of the sixteenth century. Reform, intellectual and religious doubt and certainty, and human freedom emerge as fundamental pillars of the hagiographic logic that shaped the language of sanctity
The Semantics of Obedience. Birgittine Influences on Paola Antonia Negri’s Letters
The chapter deals sheds light on some of the ways in which the Birgttine prophetic model continued to be a relevant issue in Counter-Reformation Italy. It focuses on the controversial prophet Paola Antonia Negri (1508–1555) who lived in a period of intense trouble for Northern Italian cities and the Catholic Church, and authored more than one hundred spiritual letters. She was the leader of the Angelics, the female branch of the Barnabites, but exerted an absolute authority over the whole order. Following the start of the Council of Trent in 1545, her ideas and behavior started to provoke hostile reactions from Church institutions and local authorities, until she was banned from the Barnabites. In 1576, 21 years after her death, 70 of her spiritual letters were published together with her vita penned by Giovan Battista Fontana De Conti, who explicitly links Negri’s experience with those of Birgitta of Sweden and Catherine of Siena. Amid the Counter-Reformation, Birgitta’s name re-emerged to legitimate the charisma of a much-debated godly woman who might have been confined to the silence of history
Domenica da Paradiso and the Prophetic Discipline of the Body and Soul
The case of the sixteenth-century woman prophet Domenica da Paradiso–the most important female religious leader in Florentine sixteenth century society –can shed new light on the subjective movements that made so many women think of their own body, and women’s bodies in general, not as a mark of inferiority, but rather as an instrument of spiritual and intellectual ad-vancement. Moreover, her writings allow us to deepen our understanding of Renaissance women’s ideas on and practices of the dialectic between body and intellect that continues to be key to reconstructing the experiences of late medieval and early modern women
The Feminine Ferment
This chapter discusses the structure of patriarchy and the relations established by it in Marx's thought. It starts from the hypothesis that while patriarchalism constitutes a form of domination and a mode of production in the pre-capitalist era, it does not die out, but is transformed into modern patriarchy, i.e., the hidden content of capitalist production and ideology.
It develops along two axes that are not always separable from each other: on the one hand, the political problem of patriarchy underlying global capital; on the other hand, the scientific problem, i.e., the unresolved questions that Marx explores by calling into question common sense, especially historical-anthropological common sense, to reveal patriarchy as a battleground and not as an eternal and universal power structure
The Feminist Discourse. History and Critique of Modern Political Canon
Feminist thought is a constitutive part of political thought and its history. It is both a method of inquiry, a voice and a stance on the world, a claim of women’s political centrality, and a paradoxical critique of modern political and philosophical thought. As unexpected objection, feminist discourse constantly stretches the borders of the political canon and produces critical political theory, imposing the redefinition of the categories used to interpret the present and the past. Going through six centuries of history, from the reappropriation of tradition in XV century to the tension with neoliberalism in XX century, protofeminist and feminist discourse constitutes in time a constant interruption of the monologue of Western patriarchal civilization, showing its centrality in the production, crisis and redefinition of political and social order. Thus, feminist discourse is an essential source of the history of political thought
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Specchi della riforma. Individualità, profezia e potere in due donne del Rinascimento
Starting from women’s experiences, in particular those of the prophets and nuns Domenica Narducci da Paradiso (1473-1553) e Paola Antonia Negri (1508-1555), the essay discusses the historical problem of Christian reform in early fifteenth century Italy. Drawing on the methodology of modern history and history of concepts and referring to the analyses of the hagiographic tale, of the relationship with political power, of reform ideas and of the representation of individuality, the essay aims to contribute to the debate on women and Reformation/reform.
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
