Teucrium francoi M. Seq., Capelo, J.C. Costa & R. Jardim, a new species of Teicrium gr. scorodonia (Lamiaceae) from Madeira
The species formerly recognized as Teucrium scorodonia in Madeira is here described as new: Teucrium francoi
M. Seq., Capelo, J.C. Costa & R. Jardim. Morphologically close to species of Teucrium gr. scorodonia [T. scorodonia
L., T. pseudoscorodonia Desf., T. siculum (Raf.) Guss. and T. kotschyanum Poech], it exhibits, nonetheless, some
distinct diagnostic characters. The indumentum density and type of hairs of T. francoi are clearly distinct from
those of related species, as are the shape and dimensions of the leaves and bracts, calyx, and corolla, which are
all taken as taxonomically significant diagnostic features. A diagnosis and a distribution map are presented for this
new species. Morphology, ecology, biogeography, and conservation issues are discussed. Teucrium francoi, which
is an endemic from Madeira (Portugal), is to be found mostly in the scope of the association Teucrio francoi–
Origanetum virentis J.C. Costa, Capelo, Jardim, Sequeira, Lousã & Rivas-Martínez, but also occurs in somewhat
humid habitats, such as open stands of Rosa mandonii Déségl. associated with small stream

Capelo river has an extension of 3.48 km of river and 3 km from ravine and crosses an urban and rural area. During the evaluation, six points were chosen to be analyzed. At each sampling point the following field parameters were evaluated: temperature, dissolved oxygen (OD), turbidity, pH, conductivity, sodium chloride (NaCl), and total dissolved solids. In addition, specific samples were taken for laboratory analysis: nutrients, biochemical oxygen demand (DBO5), chemical oxygen demand (DQO), solid content and coliforms (CF). In addition, samples of benthic macroinvertebrates were collected in each section, considering the types of substrates and habitats of the Capelo River. The results indicated that the evaluation of the Capelo River; the river is in a "contaminated" state according to the ICA, ABI and BMWP-R. Through this work, basic information could be carried out to define the problem and propose possible solutions to river pollution which will help improve the planning of monitoring in later years.Valencia Bonilla, Nathalia Teresa, director
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
The effect of non-equilibrium metal cooling on the interstellar medium
By using a novel interface between the modern smoothed particle hydrodynamics code GASOLINE2 and the chemistry package KROME, we follow the hydrodynamical and chemical evolution of an isolated galaxy. In order to assess the relevance of different physical parameters and prescriptions, we constructed a suite of 10 simulations, in which we vary the chemical network (primordial and metal species), how metal cooling is modelled (non-equilibrium versus equilibrium; optically thin versus thick approximation), the initial gas metallicity (from 10 to 100 per cent solar), and how molecular hydrogen forms on dust. This is the first work in which metal injection from supernovae, turbulent metal diffusion, and a metal network with non-equilibrium metal cooling are self-consistently included in a galaxy simulation. We find that properly modelling the chemical evolution of several metal species and the corresponding non-equilibrium metal cooling has important effects on the thermodynamics of the gas, the chemical abundances, and the appearance of the galaxy: the gas is typically warmer, has a larger molecular-gas mass fraction, and has a smoother disc. We also conclude that, at relatively high metallicity, the choice of molecular-hydrogen formation rates on dust is not crucial. Moreover, we confirm that a higher initial metallicity produces a colder gas and a larger fraction of molecular gas, with the low-metallicity simulation best matching the observed molecular Kennicutt-Schmidt relation. Finally, our simulations agree quite well with observations that link star formation rate to metal emission lines
"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
