Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Tourist development as a political strategy of estate: From tourist policy to tourist political. Argentina 1900-1975
The State must act in tourism, it is unquestionable. The economic, social, political and environmental aspects of tourism development based full intervention. In this regard, the paper presents an overview on key historical sociology of the emergence and institutionalization of tourism development as a political strategy of the Argentine between 1900-1975.
First, the paper will report creation cycle of tourism as a matter of state policy agenda, highlighting the various initiatives, public and private partnerships to achieve this end. Then proceed to elucidate the different orientations that tourism development represented as a political strategy of the national state during the period: 1934-1975.
Also, as the effect of emergence and institutionalization process of review described the configuration of the development of tourism as a specific field of knowing and doing and, as a power device that carries a particular strategic role
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Tourist development social reproduction and strategies
This text is meant to tourism development as a field of relational analysis plausible. In this sense, looking deeply into the issue: "Tourism and growth, tourism and poverty" to analyze and understand how and why situations enrichment and impoverishment are integrated into concrete processes of tourism development. This raises the adoption of a specific theory and method, constructed from Bourdieu\u27s sociology studies and regulation.
The letter seeks to advance knowledge of tourism as long as, substantive factor (local) development and welfare of the population. Recognizing that for the study of tourism development, theoretical and methodological tool: social reproduction strategies (SRS) is the "royal road" to understand and explain the change and continuity resulting from this process. Thus the analysis of SRS for their high interpretive value, allows clarify the objective and subjective potential of tourism for employment and welfare.
The diversity and complexity of the effects of tourism development, indicate the direction of a field of knowledge is presented as essential for the design of public policies. In Argentina it is imperative to understanding the effects of tourism development, particularly because the activity has become a national policy strategy. Lack of critical mass on this issue makes it impossible to know, how tourism can contribute, for example, to alleviate poverty or inequality or distributive, the constant reference to "criticism of ideas foreign to our socio-historical reality.
This work, on the one hand, puts the look and wants to identify analytical approaches and breaks with the different approaches of the concept of strategy, which originates in the Latin American debate in the late 1970s and especially in 1980. This refers to the notions of "life strategies" (Saenz and Di Paula, 1981), "adaptive strategies" (Bartholomew, 1985 and 1990), "survival strategies" (Argüello, 1981, Valdez and Acuña, 1981, Rodriguez 1981) and "Family life strategies" (Torres, 1981, 1982; Borsotti, 1982) under discussion above.
Furthermore, the use of this notion is to preserve a margin of choice and the social partners understand that their strategies are not completely determined by structural factors or are merely the result of a free and rational individual choice. It stresses that what matters in the relational approach to tourism development process fails to define a situation in macro-social terms, but to analyze and understand how the subjects are reproduced (and produce) socially in that context.
It then outlines a theoretical and methodological approach that seeks to overcome the action-structure dichotomy subjective-objective with major implications, for example, is the family unit or household (as opposed to individual) as ideal fórum for the analysis of strategies and social networks (symmetric and asymmetric), which allow to visualize the two exchanges of goods and services between families (Gutierrez, 2004c) is presented as a concept that enables build modes of articulation between the poor and the dominant sectors. And against the dualist position of marginality-integration ", states that the poor are not the margins of society and less of a tourism development process, but are part of both occupying subordinate positions in the system. Therefore, their strategies can not be studied in isolation but in relation to those deployed by the dominant sectors. So then, one must begin with a concept of reproductive strategies that is capable of being extended to all social groups and not restricted to cover only the ways of life of the "popular sectors". In this sense, are important contributions Torrado (op. cit.) And Borsotti (op. cit.) With the concept of "Family life strategies" Overcoming of the "survival strategies"
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
