A Roadmap for Improving Warehouse Environmental Sustainability: The Case of a Conditioned Logistics Facility for Medical Devices
In the logistics arena, green warehousing has been achieving increasing attention from both practitioners and academia. On the one hand, practitioners have started to search for solutions to decrease the environmental impact of their logistics facilities and incorporate practices towards greener warehousing processes. On the academic side, a rising – though limited – number of papers have been found addressing the impact of the green warehousing practices in place, together with the related effects on warehouse consumption and environmental performance. In this context, conditioned warehouses represent a key challenge due to their temperature constraints and the ever-demanding logistics performances, and related studies are still lacking. This paper aims to addressing this research gap by proposing a simulation-based approach where multiple scenarios of a real conditioned logistics facility are discussed, grounded on a conceptual framework of green warehousing practices selection process. Three different scenarios are proposed, and the related performances are examined in terms of energy consumption and CO2eq emissions. Implications of the results are discussed and streams for future investigation are identified
Modelling the environmental performance of logistics distribution processes: a business case in the agri-food supply chain
Purpose – Logistics practitioners face a significant challenge in meeting local and international regulations and the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals(SDGs) due to the complexities of measuring and assessing the CO2e emissions of logistics processes. This challenge is pronounced in distribution processes, where the literature currently lacks a structured approach based on existing guidelines and regulations or real-case
implementation examples.
Design/methodology/approach – To analyse the environmental performance of distribution processes, a model with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) algorithms compliant with the Global Logistics Emissions Council (GLEC) framework was developed. An integrative review identified key elements for evaluating the environmental impact of distribution processes, leading to model development. The model was validated through a business case in the agri-food supply chain, demonstrating its applicability and enabling the analysis of optimisation scenarios.
Findings – The findings suggest potential savings in CO2e emissions of up to 50% by improving vehicle efficiency and maximising vehicle capacity utilisation. Further savings of up to 30% are highlighted for the business case company by increasing intermodal transport modes use.
Originality/value – This study offers several academic and managerial contributions. On the one hand, it offers a structured approach to assess the environmental performance of the logistics distribution processes based on a comprehensive European standard and enriches the literature by providing an industrial application of GLEC framework guidelines. On the other hand, it empowers logistics practitioners with a model to assess the environmental impact of distribution processes, and it enables an enhanced decision making process in selecting transport modes to achieve the company’s sustainability goals
Reviewing and conceptualising the role of 4.0 technologies for sustainable warehousing
In recent years, various 4.0 technologies have been implemented to support or automate manual warehouse activities to meet the ever-increasing demands for lead time, service quality, productivity, and efficiency. In terms of sustainability, however, the impact of these 4.0 technologies remains unexplored. This study aims to address this gap by developing a conceptual framework for sustainable warehousing in the context of Industry 4.0, thereby focusing on the Triple Bottom Line (economic, environmental, social) and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The framework is facilitated through a systematic review and classification of the literature based on warehouse processes—receiving, storage, order picking, packing and shipping, production logistics, and cross-docking. It enables the systematic evaluation of existing research, while considering 4.0 technology applications and their sustainability impact. The study also aims to identify opportunities for advancing intelligent, sustainable warehousing and discusses implications for researchers and managers
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Strategic investment prioritization for green warehousing: a new matrix-based approach with simulation-based application to real cases in the retail sector

Logistics", analizza strategie per migliorare la sostenibilità e l’efficienza energetica
nei magazzini. Considerata la crescente incidenza del settore sui consumi energetici e
sulle emissioni, questa ricerca sviluppa un framework pratico per la prioritizzazione degli
investimenti, colmando il divario tra ricerca accademica e decisioni manageriali.
Dopo una revisione sistematica della letteratura mediante metodologia PRISMA, lo studio
identifica le migliori pratiche per il green warehousing e analizza i trend di investimento nel
settore retail. La metodologia prevede visite on-site presso magazzini reali per raccogliere
dati operativi, successivamente integrati in un approccio basato sulla simulazione. Questo
consente di generare scenari "to-be" di efficientamento energetico, utilizzati come input
per un modello di valutazione economica che risponde alle lacune di ricerca e supporta le
decisioni strategiche.
Il principale contributo di questa tesi è un nuovo framework di prioritizzazione degli investimenti
basato su una matrice decisionale, che permette di classificare le strategie di
decarbonizzazione in base all’impatto ambientale ed economico. Applicandolo a casi reali,
si supporta la transizione verso magazzini a emissioni zero.
Infine, la ricerca evidenzia i principali risultati, le implicazioni pratiche e le direzioni
future, sottolineando l’importanza della collaborazione tra accademia e industria per
l’innovazione sostenibile nella logistica.This Master’s thesis, developed within the Italian-funded PNRR research project ’Centro
Nazionale per la Mobilità Sostenibile (MOST) - Spoke 10 Sustainable Logistics’, investigates
strategies to improve sustainability and energy efficiency in warehousing. Given the
sector’s growing impact on global energy consumption and emissions, this research develops
a practical investment prioritisation framework to bridge the gap between academic
knowledge and managerial decision-making.
Following a systematic literature review using the PRISMA methodology, the study first
identifies best practices for green warehousing and then examines investment trends in the
retail sector. The methodology starts with on-site visits to logistics sites, which provide
key operational insights that are then integrated into a simulation-based approach. This
approach generates "to-be" scenarios for energy efficiency improvements, which feed into
an economic evaluation model that addresses research gaps and supports strategic investment
decisions.
The core contribution of this thesis is a new matrix-based investment prioritisation framework
that enables decision makers to rank sustainability interventions based on their environmental
and economic impacts. By applying the framework to real logistics sites,
decarbonisation strategies are evaluated to support the transition to net-zero warehouses.
Finally, the research highlights key findings, practical implications and future directions,
emphasising the importance of academic-industry collaboration for sustainable innovation
in logistics
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
