Welfare implications of Calvo vs. Rotemberg pricing assumptions

No full text
This paper compares the welfare implications of two widely used pricing assumptions in the New-Keynesian literature: Calvo-pricing vs. Rotemberg-pricing. We show that despite the strong similarities between the two assumptions to a first order of approximation, in general they might entail different welfare costs at higher order of approximation. In the special case of non-distorted steady state, the two pricing assumptions imply identical welfare losses to a second order of approximation. The Filmic Literary Works of Gabriel García Márquez

No full text
Cinema is a very important area of GGM literary activity, which the author conceived as another way to tell stories, in parallel and connected to the ways novels/stories and journalism tell stories of their own. This article addresses the work of García Márquez as a filmic writer. After briefly explaining the influence of cinema on his literary education, the article focuses on some problems in the writing of subjects and screenplays in relation to film production, which also concerned García Márquez. His film work is discussed in chronological order, while also highlighting the more relevant thematic and aesthetic elements. The theme of destiny opens and closes the discourse, given that it is present both in the first and last important screenplays by the author, Tiempo de morir and Edipo Alcalde, linked to the influence of Sophocles’s Oedipus Rex. Another relevant theme is that of the tension between realistic representation and the different forms of transfiguration of reality, via fantastic elements, absurd situations, and hyperbolic intensifications. Such aspects may be found in the screenplays of many films written by GGM between the 1970s and 1980s: Presagio, El año de la peste, María de mi corazón, Eréndira, Un señor muy viejo con unas alas enormes, and the series Amores difíciles. Finally, the article focuses on some unexecuted projects: unpublished screenplays or film stories, such as “Dios y yo”, “Para Elisa”, and “Blacamán”, which show the richness of the filmic imagination of García Márquez

Are the antiglobalists right? Gains-from-trade without a walrasian acutioneer

We show that the 'fear' of globalisation can be rationalised by economic theory in the standard AD/AS equilibrium model, if we substitute the coordinational role of the Auctioneer by an implementation device based on learning (Guesnerie, 1992). When endowing producers with a learning ability to forecast market prices, individual profit-maximizing production decisions become interdependent in a strategic sense (strategic substitutes). Performing basic comparative statics exercises, we show that 'competitiveness' matters in a precise sense: as foreign producers gain access to the home market, home producers' ability to forecast market prices is undermined, so being their ability to forecast the profit consequences of their production decisions. A standard open economy exercise shows that the efficiency gains triggered by increased competition have to be traded off against higher uncertainty (a lower likelihood to coordinate upon the welfare enhancing free-trade equilibrium). We interpret it as a new rationale for the existence of barriers to trade targeting coordination, rather than protecting mere inefficient sectors or industries (political economy driven). Finally, we show that classical measures evaluating ex-ante the desirability of economic integration (net welfare gains) do not always advice free trade.<br/

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Synopsis du genre Humbertacalia (Compositae), endémique de Madagascar et de Réunion

No full text
& J. Calvo, comb. nov., stat. nov., H. apocynifolia (Baker) Rabarim., Callm. Carte de distributionHumbertacalia C. Jeffrey is a genus native to Madagascar and Réunion characterized by its scandent habit, the discoid capitula, and the caudate anther bases. According to the present treatment, it comprises ten species, nine endemic to Madagascar and one species thriving in both Madagascar and Réunion. The new combinations Humbertacalia abbreviata (Humbert) Rabarim., Callm. & J. Calvo, comb. nov., stat. nov., H. apocynifolia (Baker) Rabarim., Callm. & J. Calvo, comb. nov., and H. diffusa (Baker) J. Calvo, Rabarim. & Callm., comb. nov., stat. nov. are established and nine other names are lectotypified. At the specific rank, the name H. voluta (Baker) C. Jeffrey is synonymized under H. apocynifolia comb. nov. and H. leucopappa (Bojer ex DC.) C. Jeffrey is synonymized under H. racemosa (Bojer ex DC.) C. Jeffrey. A detailed study of the type material of H. leucopappa at G revealed that the species was misinterpreted for a long time, despite the wide usage of the name. Revised nomenclature, diagnostic description, taxonomic discussion, conservation status and list of specimens examined are provided for all accepted species, in addition to an identification key and two illustrations.Distribution map</p
