    Klibansky e Calogero (1929-1937)

    No full text

    No full text
Aim of this paper is to outline a new evolutionary interpretation of aesthetic emotions, in the light of the most recent developments in Evolutionary Biology, in particular the so-called “Extended Synthesis of Evolution” (Pigliucci-Müller 2010). Focussing on the biological concept of homology, the Author argues that, in order to effectively understand role and evolutionary value of aesthetic emotions, it should be asked not “what aesthetic emotions are for?”, rather “what kind of constraints and homologies influence the specific “shape” of human aesthetic emotions?”. In a few words, we should move from a functionalist approach to human aesthetic emotions towards a morphological one

Economia del desiderio: piacere e conoscenza nell’estetica di Herder

    No full text
Published by Herder in 1781, the short study "Liebe und Selbstheit" represents one of the most significant moments of the reception of the works of Hemsterhuis in Germany, and is, at the same time, one of the most advanced points of arrival of the aesthetic and physiological thought of its author

Critica del riduzionismo e pensiero morfologico. La «Neuronale Ästhetik» di Olaf Breidbach

    No full text
The proposal of a neuronal aesthetics developed by Olaf Breidbach looks like one of the most advanced points in contemporary morphological thinking and as an extremely challenging effort to redefine the conceptual system of aesthetics; at the same time it is, unfortunately prematurely, the theoretical testament of its author

Earthquake-resistant timber frame techniques in the Calabrian valleys of Gallico and Catona after the 1908 Messina earthquake: analysis and typological classification

    No full text
The catastrophic earthquake that hit the area of the Strait of Messina on 28 December 1908 stimulated an immediate re-evaluation of historical anti-seismic construction techniques, the memory of which had been gradually lost following the experiences of the late 18th century. The adoption in seismic contexts of the baraccata system, based on the use of timber framing embedded in the masonry, was in fact already regulated in 1784, but the absence of subsequent major earthquakes disincentivised its use in southern Calabria over the following century. The effects of the earthquakes in Palmi in 1894, southern Calabria in 1905 and, lastly, that of 1908, however, highlighted the vulnerability of masonry buildings in the Reggio Calabria area, thus representing the spur for a reconstruction marked by the extensive use of timber as a structural material. In the fifteen years following the earthquake, there was a constant and diversified use of anti-seismic timber frame construction techniques: from slender intelaiata structures without masonry cladding to baraccata buildings built in accordance with regulatory requirements, including different typological variants depending on the form and position of the frame and the type of masonry used. The survey of the buildings in the settlements along the Gallico and Catona valleys to the north of Reggio Calabria – in particular, an analysis of the numerous ruined buildings scattered throughout the territory and of some recent restoration works – highlights the widespread use of these building systems. Regulated by building codes but resulting from an often spontaneous andemergency constructive practice, it constitutes a cultural heritage of considerable importance; its knowledge, also aimed at a greater understanding of its conservation features, is therefore an essential condition for the valorisation of the entire territory

An interpretation of the landsliding process affecting the town of Roccella Valdemone

    No full text
The western slope of the small town of Roccella Valdemone, in Sicily, is affected by a landslide that in 1950 reached the urban centre, subsequently propagated uphill up until 1996, and destroyed many constructions. The mass movement involves essentially stiff tectonised clays and heterogeneous argillaceous debris. The causes and the evolution of the landsliding process are discussed in the paper, in which the devised, and par-tially implemented, remedial measures are also outlined

Gino Borgatta, la Grande Guerra e la propaganda per i prestiti tra convinzioni patriottiche e convenienze economiche

    No full text
The examination of loan promotion activity carried out by the economist Gino Borgatta, here retraced, intends to present itself as a piece of the broader analysis of the propaganda of national loans during the Great War, which still has not been suffi ciently explored. The author reconstructs the economic and political reasons put forth by Borgatta to induce taxpayers to accept the loan. The journalistic commitment of Einaudi and Pareto’s pupil would thus have helped to unite the internal front, presenting the loans as an integral part of that levée en masse invoked by government authorities as dutifully complementary to the blood tribute off ered in the trenches

Pedagogia civile e nation-building nelle Storie d’Italia di Luigi Capuana

    No full text
Civil education and nation-building in Luigi Capuana’s handbooks of Italian history In his school textbooks published in the early twentieth century, Capuana fully revealed the role of educator and creator of national identity he intended to carry out. In them, the author identifies in the conflict between the political forces and in the absence of unifying spirit the reasons of the delay in the political unification of Italy. Adherence to the moderate liberalism, which differed both from legitimist conservatism and from republican radicalism, would thus led Capuana to express his sympathy to the “good governance” of the historical Right without preventing him from later recognizing colonialism supported by Francesco Crispi as an unavoidable historical necessity

Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy in groupers (<it>Epinephelus</it> spp.) in southern Italy: a threat for wild endangered species?

Abstract Background Betanodaviruses are the causative agents of Viral Encephalopathy and Retinopathy (VER). To date, more than 50 species have proved to be susceptible and among them, those found in genus Epinephelus are highly represented. Clinical disease outbreaks are generally characterized by typical nervous signs and significant mortalities mainly associated with aquaculture activities, although some concerns for the impact of this infection in wild fish have been raised. In this study, the authors present the first documented report describing an outbreak of VER in wild species in the Mediterranean basin. Case presentation In late summer - early winter 2011 (September-December), significant mortalities affecting wild Dusky grouper (Epinephelus marginatus), Golden grouper (Epinephelus costae) and European sea bass (Dicentrarchus labrax) were reported in the municipality of Santa Maria di Leuca (Northern Ionian Sea, Italy). The affected fish showed an abnormal swimming behavior and swollen abdomens. During this epizootic, five moribund fish showing clear neurological signs were captured and underwent laboratory investigations. Analytical results confirmed the diagnosis of VER in all the specimens. Genetic characterization classified all betanodavirus isolates as belonging to the RGNNV genotype, revealing a close genetic relationship with viral sequences obtained from diseased farmed fish reared in the same area in previous years. Conclusion The close relationship of the viral sequences between the isolates collected in wild affected fish and those isolated during clinical disease outbreaks in farmed fish in the same area in previous years suggests a persistent circulation of betanodaviruses and transmission between wild and farmed stocks. Further investigations are necessary to assess the risk of viral transmission between wild and farmed fish populations, particularly in marine protected areas where endangered species are present.</p

Video Game, Author and Lemming: The Knowledge-Building Process

    No full text
Many studies show that video games require attentive and interpretive capacity to generate complex cognitive skills in the gamer and they can be transferred to other contexts, such as school. In this paper, the authors do not aim to investigate the contents of the player’s thinking, but rather his/her way of thinking. In this scenario the teacher becomes a worlds’ maker, who provides his/her students with the tools allowing them to partake in the co-building of multi-tiered worlds, which requires not only the ability to get access to intangible information but also a skillful management of media interfaces. In this way, the click of the mouse becomes the action par excellence that allows each individual to contribute synergistically to the realization of the digital habitats. The ultimate goal is to search, in the learning processes activated by the video games in both the authors and the lemming, those features that make the learner a self-knowledge builder. Such “socio-cultural grammar” influences the writing and interpretation of messages, turning every individual into an author, who’s often unaware of the “scriptwriting culture” that inhabits all the possible media worlds
