    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Tomboys and Crossdressers de Sadie Lee, vers une esthétique butch

    Ce mémoire propose de localiser une esthétique butch dans la série de portraits Tomboys and Crossdressers de la peintre Sadie Lee. L’identité lesbienne butch est le plus souvent définie à travers un déploiement de codes masculins, sans pour autant insister sur les nuances avec lesquelles ils sont incarnés. C’est pour cette raison que j’articule mon analyse de manière progressive en la confrontant à celles de plusieurs photographies de Del LaGrace Volcano et de Catherine Opie. Dans la considération de ces œuvres, je m’engage à porter une attention particulière au geste pour son aspect fondateur d’une performance de la masculinité, mais aussi pour l’émotion qu’il communique. Elle est le biais par lequel j’appréhende dans un premier temps l’identité butch qui est mise en contexte par l’examen du traumatisme. Cette méthode s’inscrit dans ma volonté de m’opposer à un tournant positiviste dans les études queer qui a tendance à effacer le dénigrement continuel de l’existence queer. Les variations de médiums m’autorisent également à faire ressortir des histoires différentes de ce traumatisme. La considération des œuvres de Volcano permet, par exemple, de comprendre le rôle de la photographie dans la constitution de l’image de la « déviante » et du « déviant » sexuel.le et genré.e. La centralité de la matérialité du corps dans son travail artistique procure à l’identité butch une flexibilité dans son expression de genre et atteste que son esthétique trouve de nombreux points communs avec l’esthétique transgenre. En utilisant son corps, Catherine Opie propose de déstabiliser une dernière fois les conclusions tirées jusqu’ici. La photographe redéfinit l’identité butch, et par la même occasion l’esthétique butch, au-delà du traumatisme en offrant une image du plaisir. C’est alors ainsi que je fais la démonstration d’une esthétique butch toujours dynamique et qui s’oppose à l’essentialisation de l’identité sexuelle et genrée.This thesis explores the butch aesthetic of the painter Sadie Lee’s series of portraits, Tomboys and Crossdressers. Using masculine codes as a yardstick, definitions of butch lesbian identity frequently lack nuance, failing to attend to fine, yet crucial, distinctions that manifest within that identity. In order to provide a corrective to this heavy-handed approach, I tease out the subtleties of butch lesbian identity by bringing Sadie Lee’s works into dialogue with photographs by Del LaGrace Volcano and Catherine Opie. My cumulative consideration of these works, which each manifest butch aesthetics in distinct ways, pays particular attention to gesture as it contributes to the performance of masculinity, and also as it functions as a vehicle for communicating emotion. I then contextualise my analyses of gesture through an examination of trauma. My focus on trauma is rooted in the desire to counter a positive turn in queer studies that tends to erase longstanding denigrations of queer existence. My consideration of different media, namely painting and photography, permits me to highlight differing narratives of this trauma. My readings of the works of Volcano, for example, enhance understanding of the role of photography in the historical construction of images of sexual and gendered deviancy. The centrality of corporeality in Volcano’s artistic work offers a valuable means to appreciate the versatility of butch identity as an expression of gender and also demonstrates that butch aesthetics has numerous points in common with transgender aesthetics. In their turn, Catherine Opie’s self-portraits destabilise my prior conclusions. Opie redefines butch identity – and, concomitantly, the butch aesthetic – moving beyond trauma and offering, instead, an image of pleasure. Through these differing case studies, I demonstrate that the butch aesthetic is always dynamics, continually resisting the essentialisation of gender and sexual identity

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
